It’s the final weekend of CFL action. I’ll miss Canadian football when it’s done, of course – but I have so much to do between now and May 2024 that I feel like I’m barely going to have time to catch my breath. Timing this week’s column with my report card deadlines has been an extremely elaborate balancing act.
In league news this week:
- Ottawa city council voted last week to approve a major redevelopment of the city-owned Lansdowne Park complex, which includes TD Place Stadium and Arena; home to the REDBLACKS and the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67s, the complex was renovated significantly when the CFL came back to town back in 2014, including rebuilding the south side grandstands, significantly retrofitting the arena, and completely redeveloping the surrounding parking lot in a more dense, walkable mixed-use residential and commercial area designed to attract patrons on game days and during the offseason. The stadium is great, but the rest has been decidedly mixed. In this new city vote, the north side grandstands will now be completely demolished and the arena underneath them dynamited as well. The stands and arena will both be rebuilt from scratch, but with the arena located to the east end of the property, looking onto the end zone, rather than having the north side stands sitting directly on top as they are in their current configuration. There will also be several new condo towers and other retail outlets added in the new design. The major issue with this deal, however, is that it allocates more than $400 million of taxpayer money to the Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group, the holding company that owns the REDBLACKS & 67s and is the stadium and facility managing partner… in a time when public transit is literally falling apart and cost of living is shooting through the roof, this is an egregious misappropriation of public funds and isn’t going to help the city as a whole. I am concerned that costs will continue to balloon.
- The Saskatchewan Roughriders released DB Nic Marshall after he was arrested for felony gun charges in his home state of Georgia; the charges include possession of a sawed-off shotgun, which carries a potential five-year prison sentence if convicted. Marshall was scheduled to be a free agent this winter after appearing in 17 games this year with the team.
- The CFL announced this week that it will return to a more balanced schedule for 2024; in the wake of COVID, the previous three seasons have all featured an (over)abundance of divisional matches; the new schedule will feature every team playing every other team a minimum of two times, with at least one home and away game for each of those contests. This is a welcome development – and with the East returning to highlight some depth for the first time in many years, I am curious to see just what will happen when teams don’t have to play each other so often anymore.
Onto the games!
DIVISION FINAL RECAPS
EAST DIVISION FINAL
(2) Montreal 37 vs. (1) Toronto 18: Wow. What an upset. The Als’ defence came to play for this game. Holy cow. The Argos, who were favoured by 10.5 at kickoff, gave up a pick-six on the opening drive of the game, and their incredibly impressive regular season all came crashing down in a rubble. Montreal forced nine turnovers – including four interceptions, two of which were turned over for TDs – and got enough offence to get the job done. Between the two pick-sixes and the 105-yard kickoff return TD late in the game from Montreal return Man James Letcher, Jr., the Alouettes had enough points from their defence and special teams alone to win the game. Toronto QB Chad Kelly had unquestionably his worst game of the season, and at such an inopportune time to boot. After such a great year, it’s no doubt a tough end to the season – but if there’s any solace to be had for these 16-2 Argos, the only other team to ever go 16-2 – the 1989 Edmonton team – similarly did not make it to a Grey Cup game, losing in the West Final to the 9-9 Saskatchewan Roughriders. Time to reset and get ready for next year – Toronto may have lost here, but they’re probably going to be very good once again next year.
PICK: Toronto
RESULT: Montreal
WEST DIVISION FINAL
(2) BC 13 vs. (1) Winnipeg 24: In the West Semi, good Vernon Adams, Jr. showed up. In the West Final… it was unfortunately bad Vernon Adams, Jr. that took the field. Winnipeg’s D completely stopped him up, forcing him into three interceptions and racking up nine sacks; he had just one TD on the night, on a 50-yard Hail Mary bomb to end the first half. Tough sledding for the Leos, who’ve now lost two straight West Finals in Winnipeg. The Bombers had a relatively quiet night on offence, but still moved the ball well enough on the ground, with Brady Oliveira recording yet another 100+-yard night and a TD; with WR Dalton Schoen out with an ankle injury, the rest of the team stepped up well in his absence. The only real blow for the Bombers was to LB Adam Bighill, who went down with a non-contact injury; he may have ruptured his Achilles, which would be a notable loss for their excellent defence in the coming Grey Cup matchup. A masterful player and emotional leader for Winnipeg, he’s been a key part of this team’s resurgence over the last five years – I hope he’s healthy and good to go for Sunday, but we’ll have to see.
PICK: Winnipeg
RESULT: Winnipeg
110th GREY CUP PREVIEW
TIM HORTONS FIELD, HAMILTON, ON
(1W) Winnipeg (15-4) vs. (2E) Montreal (13-7), Sunday, November 19th, 6:00 PM EST (TSN, ESPN2): One of the most surprising stats to me about this year’s championship matchup is that in 110 years of Canadian football history, these two franchises have never once squared off for the privilege of hoisting the Grey Cup. For the Bombers, it’s their fourth consecutive trip to the Grey Cup, while for the Alouettes, it’s their first visit to a title game since 2010, when Hall of Famer Anthony Calvillo was out slinging deep balls and not calling plays from the sideline for Montreal. New Als owner Pierre-Karl Péladeau is probably stoked at this quick return to competitiveness – full credit to head coach Jason Maas for the turnaround this year. I’ll be curious to see longterm if Montreal can keep things stable with him at the helm, but after their mid-season swoon, they’ve really come into their own over these final few weeks of 2023. Last week’s big win shows that their D is unquestionably good enough to win championships; however, Winnipeg, with Zach Collaros under centre (fun fact: he’s the first QB in CFL history to start in four straight Grey Cup games), Brady Oliveira at RB, and a mess of talented receivers up and down the depth chart, are the league’s most explosive and dynamic offence. The Bombers’ greatest strength is their continued ability to mix things up and pull out the unexpected; but if the Alouettes’ D can force turnovers, they’re absolutely good enough to win. I’m pretty sure every single pundit was writing them off last week before that massive upset win – my eyes are wide open now. That’s the beauty of Canadian football – anything at all can happen. Still, hard to bet against a team that’s made the title game for four years in a row. Win or lose, Winnipeg HC Mike O’Shea is already at this stage in his career one of the best to ever lead a team in the CFL – year after year, these Blue Bombers continue to be the class of the league.
PICK: Winnipeg
Enjoy the game, everyone.
Rando question:
There’s a Chick-fil-a that’s now opened near me. Is it worth the wait in line and to ignore their homophobia to get stuff from there? Note that there’s a Popeye’s across the street from them that’s never busy.
I’ve had both and they’re approximately equal. I’d give Popeye’s a slight edge. The best fast food chicken sandwich I’ve had – and honestly it’s not even close – was surprisingly the Ch’King from Burger King. Which apparently was too good for this world, because it was discontinued shortly after they introduced it.
I’d agree with this. The Popeye’s chicken sandwich is better, but the Chick-fil-a sandwich is perfectly edible. The Chick-fil-a one isn’t worth a long wait.
And I just looked up that Ch’King sandwich. I don’t remember it even existing, and a lot of folks thought that it was way better than a Popeye’s.
And you folks have now made me plan to get Popeye’s chicken for dinner. Have to go shop this evening anyway, but still…
It was shockingly good.
What I read was that BK discontinued it because it was too big of a PITA to deal with on the menu. That they wanted to focus their efforts on the classic Whopper, fries, and Coke menu items.
I think at this point, BK’s are money-laundering fronts rather than legitimate business concerns. Like Gumbygirl said below; who eats there? They’re always empty.
Popeyes is the clear winner. Their chicken sandwich is killer but I think their blackened chicken sandwich might be even better. It’s got a nice kick to it.
They built a brand new BK here last year, and it’s always empty. I don’t think I’ve visited his majesty in at least 40 years. It was nasty then, and that appears to still be the case.
I used to like the Whopper, and the pink slime chicken sandwich. Granted, that was back when your choices were McD’s, Wendy’s, or BK. The last Whopper I had was pretty underwhelming. If I want a poor-quality hamburger, there’s a Rally’s close to the house.
BK had some kind of coffee drink, that was an identical twin to Cinnabon’s Mochalatta Chill. My wife and I would get one once in a while, and by the time we were getting back to the main road it would be gone.
Depends on the length of the line.
will guess that as it’s the only one for miles, that the line will be long
Eh, ChickFilA is just chicken. If you’ve never had it, it will never live up to the kind of hype you might associate with it from friends/family/randoms.
I liken it to In N Out – I did not grow up in or around CA, never had In N Out until I was a full on adult. I do not have the shared childhood history of eating and experiencing In N Out. When I finally lived to CA and tried it, I was completely unimpressed, to the horror of my CA friends who grew up with it. To me, it was just another fast food burger, not any better or worse than any place else.
I grew up around ChickFilA, I was eating it at the mall, after school, during college (great for hangovers). When I moved to the West Coast, and friends I made had never had it before, once they finally got to try it – they were unimpressed. Just another chicken sandwich to them.
My daughter doesn’t have the mental fortitude to boycott Chick-fil-a.
Boy, I sure do. I’ll never go there again.
I should bust her ass over it a little more. There’s too many places you can get decent chicken out there. Ex: Popeye’s for sandwiches, Raising Cain’s for tenders. Of course it’ll probably turn out that the owner of Cain’s is a Three Percenter or something like that.
Popeye’s is better. Why would anyone sit in line to feel shame? I can do that all by myself, without waiting!
Stick with popeyes. Youngest right and I would do the Chick Fil-a when she was younger and we went to the mall but as soon as I heard about their politics?
Fuck them
Never ever again. It’s been a good 20 years now.
IMO Popeye’s is better. I’ve never understood the fascination with Chick-fil-a, even putting the homophobia aside. It’s a good sandwich, nothing great.
Now if you happen to live in a state that has a Zaxby’s – GO THERE. That shit is amazingly still as damned good 20 years after I moved from Georgia.
We stopped there on the way back from the Outer Banks a couple of months ago. The chicken sandwich I had was good.
They opened up a Bojangles here, close to the house. Am I confabulating here, or does Bojangles sell chicken pieces, a’la wings, thighs, breasts, etc. I ask because prior to the stop at Zaxby’s we stopped at a Bojangles, and they were out of chicken. And the new Bojangles by me doesn’t sell chicken in pieces; you can get strips and sandwiches.
I honestly can’t remember. I don’t think I’ve even been inside a Bojangles since I left the south/east coast.

How dare they besmirch the good name of a Nobel Prize Laureate, a Super Bowl MVP and that thief on the cross on the right that Jesus Christ personally forgave!
A drag queen, an astronaut, and the inventor of the touchscreen walk into a bar. The bartender asks “What’ll it be, Congressman Santos?”
Barabbas IIRC.
Not exactly. Barabbas was the one the crowd chose over Jesus. Dismas was the one to the right who asked for mercy and who Jesus said he would see him in Heaven. Gestas was the one on the left who mocked Jesus but in his defense when your own execution is overshadowed by someone else, you have a right to be upset.
I stand corrected! Guess I should’ve stayed awake in Sunday School.
I’ve been binging on Letterkenny to catch up to the final season and just realized that I had dipped out long enough to not realize that Marie Fred cheated on Wayne and I haven’t been this legitimately mad about something since Trump got elected in 2016, which is a real commentary on my priorities.
This is total bullshit.
Tis, and not going to spoil anything, but it’s gonna get worse.
/all the feels
I am not watching Letterkenny to see my favorite characters grow as people by dealing with serious adversity in their personal relationships. I am watching for the drinking, the pitter-patter, the unusual amount of hot women in Letterkenny, and the occasional fight.
there’s some doozy donnybrooks

I am so goddamned happy to be reunited with my bidet.
We’re all happy about it.
DR. MRS. DEADLY, ESQ: Why are you hugging the toilet?
RIKKI-TIKKI-DEADLY: I’m not hugging it, I’m cleaning it.
DR. MRS. DEADLY, ESQ: Then why are your arms wrapped around it?
How bout dem Al’s!
You become a fan and they get to the Grey Cup.
Coincidence?
I THINK NOT!
It has come to my attention that there is (was?) a CFL player named Poop Johnson. Why have we not been following his career closely? There could be a Poop Corner or Poop Scoop or Poop Tracks or Skid Marks.
THIS DFO AUTHORSHIP I CALL IT SOUTHERN EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS BECAUSE, WHILE SOMETIMES IT’S ACCEPTABLE TO GO BLUE, TALKING BROWN IS FOUND TO BE ABSOLUTELY REPULSIVE.
All those wasted “Poop Chute” jokes wasted!
I don’t know much about the CFL and how well they pay players, but when a team has 9 (!) turnovers, 4 by the QB, in a game they’re heavily favoUred to win, I tend to wonder just how many people knew to bet the underdog.
Haven’t seen such a failed plan put into place by Canadian officials since Ted Cruz tried to raise a daughter who would not try to kill herself.
That’s just wrong.
Ted Cruz isn’t even trying to raise a daughter who won’t try to kill herself.
I honestly didn’t know felony gun charges even existed in Georgia. I mean, this is fucking Infowars country. Those people are absolute animals down there.
The ol’ sawed-off shotgun.
This is Nic. Arrested for sawed -off shotgunning while black.
If i ran gameday experience for the 67’s, we’d call the greater fanbase the 68’s and the diehards who showed up to the games could call themselves the 69’s.
Can we take more time to laugh at the Argos?
It’s all fun and games until you wake up to find a crunk Swag Kelly muttering to himself on your sofa.
A team from Toronto choking in the playoffs? Huh.
The Argonauts loss in the semi-finals: What this means for the Maple Leafs
-Toronto Star headline
There’s no way The Star mentioned the Argo’s in a story. It’s the Leaf’s all day, every day. Nothing else matters.
