Sharkbaits Cocktail of the Week: RICE Method

Hello and welcome to the weekend. This week’s cocktail is quick and easy for good reason. In the dying seconds of my hockey game on Wednesday, while we were getting blown out, I somehow managed to roll or sprain my ankle attempting to make another of my at least 45 plus saves.

Thankfully, the injury is nowhere close to the severity of injuries I’ve had in the past in this league; namely the three shoulder dislocations leading to surgery on said shoulder. However there is still a bit of swelling and being on my feet can get a bit uncomfortable/slightly painful after a few minutes, despite the heroic efforts of the Motrin I’ve been taking as soon as the schedule allows  for more. Somewhere Hippo is sad that nothing stronger is available.

Along with better living through pharmaceuticals, the best way to treat a mild sprain is the RICE Method. RICE being an acronym for:

R – rest
I – ice
C – compression
E – elevation

So what does this have to do with a cocktail this week? I decided to have a little fun with the acronym and make up my own version while doing the aforementioned RICE:

R – rye
I – ice
C – citrus peel
E – enjoy

It’s rye, with a twist. Not much more than that. It’s tasty and the lemon twist adds a nice citrus zing to the whiskey, altering the flavor just a little bit. It’s the perfect drink to nurse a sprained ankle as well as a bruised ego from the shellacking I took the previous game. So…yeah, sorry for not going more in depth on something more complex than whiskey and lemon, but standing and preparing and mixing isn’t the best move right now. Hopefully I’ll be up to A) playing again and B) mixing more drinks next weelk.

I’m having a memory of a kid I knew who made his crutches into a flask to sneak booze into concerts and such

Senor Weaselo

So… your best Igor Shesterkin impression?

BeefReeferLives

Looks to be simple, refreshing, and boozy. Thanks, Sharky! Hope the ankle feels better soon (a few of these though, and you’ll forget all about the pain)

BeefReeferLives

Though, must admit when I saw the title I though this was going to be a drink with rice milk in it.

(Horchata with some rum added to it is quite nummy, btw)

BugEyedBoo

Tried to make DIY horchata a while back. It turned out it’s too much like work, especially when there are a couple of restaurants close by that sell really good horchata.

BeefReeferLives

Yeah, that’s the way I did it. Bought a large horchata with the take home tacos (cuz I’m lazy, you see…) then used it to make cocktails over ice.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Yeah, we’ve had that experience too. Not with horchata specifically, but making things and having them come out pretty good but never doing it again because it’s easier to leave it to the pros.

You can buy it!

Seems like the citrus peel selection is pretty important here. Oh we talking about citrus peels? Thank you for asking, the blood orange grafting seems to be showing life after about ten days.

Fun Fact: “Blood orange grafting” is a trigger phrase for Melania.

Aw, man, wish I’d have known. I could have written up the drink I made last night.

(Recognizes I have a backlog of posts I’ve promised and not delivered…)

blaxabbath

That reminds me of another post I should write….

BallsofLacrosseAndMapleSyrup

It’s not your fault that you don’t have time to write the other posts if you’re writing for someone else.

For some reason resting a minor injury normally does not work well for me. Active recovery, going slow and easy works better.

after day 2, I then put a heating pad on the area to try to help with the blood flow.
also has a bad ankle from when I was a teen that will nevar get better, so not sure you should take any advice from me
