Leave Your Droppings Here: A Sunday Morning Open Thread

The woman above is the strikingly beautiful Sydne Rome in the movie What? which is…unique. She did a number of Spaghetti Westerns and such as well. She reminds me of a waitress I once worked with many moons ago who had guys mooning over her on a daily basis.

Not much going on football-wise that I can see so I’ll yak about some other stuff.

The Dregs Report:

-It’s only a Texas state senate seat that Trump won by 17 points in the last federal election but Democrat Taylor Rehmet carried the Fort Worth area district by 14 percentage points. That’s a swing that Benny Goodman could get into. Outlier? Perhaps. But those of us on the outside that still possess a sliver of hope have something to cling to.

-Food Alert!: yeahright will be along soon with his salivatory postings and I can’t wait. Wifey would like me to make something today and as her and the oldest are protein gobblers (easy now) I thought about making an Alison Roman-inspired chickpea stew or a lentil-forward soup. We’ll see. If you have something similar in your repertoire please feel free to share.

-As for now wifey is going snowshoeing and boy is doing a ski patrol thingy in -13C weather. Suckers.

-Paul George has been suspended 25 games for “drugs”. That’ll cost him nearly 12 mil of the 52 that is owed him this year.

-I’m currently reading a Dylan Thomas bio and it’s a slog. I should have known when I saw the copious notes at the back of the book. This author is thorough.

-This Is America: Tuskegee basketball coach Benjy Taylor was handcuffed by a cop at the end of a game at Morehouse College. Nary a mention of it on ESPN that I can find this morning. I guess it didn’t really happen then.

-Lousy Morning Movie: Today’s choice is Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (1975). Only one set of boobies so far at 24 minutes in. I am 14 years old.

Sprots!: Ranked college ball teams playing today include Purdue, Alabama, Iowa State and #5 Nebraska(!). There’s women’s curling, Premier action I assume, hawkey and the NBA. Pickleball is noticeably absent.

Enjoy the day and let us know what’s on your agenda.

Sources: Reds, Eugenio Suarez reach one-year, $15M deal – ESPN

The Cincinnati Reds did something?! The Cincinnati Reds actually did something!!!

Mr. Ayo

Man, he sucked for the Dirt HOX last year after the trade. I blame him for their failure to reach the World Series.

Redshirt

Yeah, I could tell by the Prove-It Contract he got to go back to Cincy. Hopefully playing in a hitter’s park and the weak-ass NL Central will get him back on track.

Horatio Cornblower

It’ll probably get him traded at the deadline to a contender that deludes themselves to thinking that his offensive production at Great American Bandbox makes up for high strikeout rate and atrocious defense.

Should I eat ice cream directly from the container, or scoop it into a bowl?
Scooping takes valuable seconds that could be spent eating ice cream, plus it creates an extra dirty dish. However, I don’t plan on eating the entire container of ice cream, so eating directly from the container means I will have to get out my hammock to put the remainder in the freezer so it won’t melt. BUT I can get a drink when I do that so container it is!

Horatio Cornblower

I’m stunned those useless Tottenham fucks did anything even remotely helpful.

/That Solanke goal was just stupid.

Redshirt

You could make an argument that ICE is worse than the Fugitive Slave Act because at least someone has to go to court to make a claim a person is a suspected enslaved person. It was an unfair, perverted use of the courts, but at least the courts were involved.

I never thought I would be a position to defend the Fugitive Slave Act, but here we are…

Redshirt

I think it was all courts. All the courts had to do was file an affidavit that someone was an escaped slave and then the person could be arrested and enslaved. The accused person couldn’t defend themselves or provided evidence that they were not the person they were accused of being or that they were a freedman.

There was many subtle action that led to a slippery slope into the American Civil War, Senator James Mason used the Fugitive Slave Act as a Snow Tube to dive headfirst out of the Antebellum.

Yeah, good thing we don’t live that in that anymore.

Horatio Cornblower

I’m against illegal immigration. I think illegal immigrants should be deported. I think ICE-like government departments have a very important role to play in that.

And having said that, if every person currently affiliated with ICE were to be exposed to Chernobyl levels of radiation tomorrow, then basically, and painfully, melt to death over the next several days I would be very likely to respond by baking a cake.

Redshirt

As a Moderate Conservative, I believe in part to your beliefs. The immigration system is broken and needs fixed. Every illegal immigrant who committed a serious crime and doesn’t contribute positively to society should be run out of town on a rail with the understanding that they will be shot of sight if they dare return.

However, the rest of the illegal immigrants who are trying to do right and live a better life and are contributing to society should be allowed to remain as they shouldn’t be faulted for a broken system. They should be given a pathway to something short of full citizenship but better than their current illegals, with their children given full and unquestionable natural citizenship.

ICE’s current Keystone Kops meets A Clockwork Orange method of treating both sides equally erodes the trust between the citizens and the government and completely makes the situation completely worse. So, I will happily bring the icing for your cake.

King Hippo

Yeah, if we could find a non-insane way to provide these productive members of society a path (I like a surcharge on state and federal income taxes, say, for five years) AND they stay out of police trouble AND they pass a citizenship test? I think that works fine and dandy.

The problem is that people who come at this issue with “heat” are absolutely bonkers nuts about it. There is no political incentive to actually address the problem.

Horatio Cornblower

To be clear I would also like the option of deporting many multi-generational Americans. Especially the types who come at this issue with heat, because most of them are racist morons.

bk109

AND they stay out of police trouble”
Problem is that by definition, them crossing the border illegally puts them into trouble with the police.
As a filthy European conservative (look somewhere to the left of Lenin on the US scale) I think that there’s only one way to deal with illegal migrants that are there in a country to work and not to be a “problem”.
Background check and amnesty (for those that are in-country) and a form of points system for future immigrants. One where basically the State (as in Federal or local government) places people based on their skillset and “upside”.
And yes, without the State/Federal 5 year “back tax” thing, because each purchase you make at the store is taxable too, but them as illegals can’t really avail themselves of any *real* social safety net, meaning that essentially … they’re giving the State free money.
(Sorry if this is a tad rambly, typing this while recapping a laptop PSU so I am distracted.. and yes – the smell of burned skin is from me so crack open a window)

Redshirt

“AND they stay out of police trouble”
Problem is that by definition, them crossing the border illegally puts them into trouble with the police.

That’s my biggest issue with ICE. Well, one of the biggest issues.

Doktor Zymm

It’s a misdemeanor, Sha’Carri Richardson just got in more trouble for speeding than you should be able to get into for crossing the border illegally. It’s essentially a paperwork violation, akin to being late renewing your car’s registration.

And quite a few of them pay full on federal, state, and local income taxes and social security as well as sales tax. They get a TIN and it benefits everyone as it establishes them in the country on record and increases tax revenues. One of the quieter fucked up policy changes of this admin is using the IRS to go after these tax paying immigrants. There is zero reason beyond hate and cruelty to go after these people.

bk109

I didn’t say it was a shooting offence, I said that by definition them crossing over is *a form of trouble with the police*.
And I said that I disagreed with Hippo’s idea of the path to legalization including back taxes – because even if they don’t pay *any* income/etc taxes, just sales tax is “free money” to the State that they don’t see anything *in return* for giving said money to the State.

Doktor Zymm

I wasn’t disagreeing with you, just amplifying some of the absurdities

And a technicality, plenty of people cross the border legally then overstay a visa, which is even more trivial of an offense than walking from one piece of public property to another

Last edited 1 month ago by Doktor Zymm
bk109

Ah, And I thought that my point was coming across wrongly and reads as if making the opposite point than the one I intended to, so I was trying to clarify it (apparently redundantly) 😀

Last edited 1 month ago by bk109
King Hippo

You do the tax thing to help pay for the extra judicial and administrative work (and to defray some of the “hurr durr amnesty” cries).

You could also define “police trouble” with way more specificity, to not include the border crossing itself, parking/within-reason-speeding tickets, etc.

The problem remains is that there is no constituency for it. GOP would rather keep their base angry over almost any policy outcome.

Nuremberg 2.0 …
So a pointless show trial that put in the dirt a scant few shitbags, while by definition (since they weren’t prosecuted or otherwise “dealt with”) everyone else was whitewashed, because they were “useful” in one way or another?
A Nazi here rebuilds the Wehrma.. I mean Bundeswehr (Speidel and Heusinger), an unrepentant Nazi that helped fucking Mengele escape consults the USAF there (Ulrich Rudel) there …
Hell, Adenauer’s right hand man literally cowrote the Nürnberg Race Laws and Kiesinger was a fucking Nazi high-up that worked closely with Von Ribbentrop AND Goebbels…

And then there’s the whole
Eh, Von Braun may’ve had his own concentration camp and facilitated terror bombings of Britain.. but he got us to the Moon!

Edit: In fact – fun historical factoid – aside from the scant handful of cunts that got executed, the longest sentence went to Rudolf Hess who spend most of the war (and thus most of the icky wholesale slaughter of people based on ethnicity or political beliefs thing) as a prisoner… Getting a harsher fucking sentence than Albert Speer that LITERALLY oversaw slave labor.
Almost as if he was imprisoned for life not to share how close the “plucky” Brits were to signing a separate peace in 1940 😀

People are held accountable… for their crimes..
You mean the same country that gave the CO at My Lai 3 days in prison and not even charged Bush/Powell/ for Iraq ’03 (or Bill Clinton for going to bomb shit each time Hillary caught him balls deep in an intern)?

Seriously, as a cynical foreigner – can you tell me one unambiguous case of an American higher up (military or civvie) that was held accountable for his (or her) actions?
And no, assassinations don’t count XD. And no, this isn’t me being sarcastic, but legit curious, because the more you look at US history (and history of the great powers in general).. accountability is not in evidence

Horatio Cornblower

John Rowland, former Governor of Connecticut, did two stints in prison for felony convictions. Joe Ganim, mayor of Bridgeport, did time in prison for various felonies. And then Bridgeport re-elected him after he got out, because Bridgeport. Phillip Giordano was the mayor of Waterbury, CT and being investigated for various forms of corruption but the FBI dropped that investigation when one of their listening devices, and I am not making this up, caught him molesting children in his office. Phil is still in jail, presumably in protective custody because his wife was allegedly connected to certain Italian organizations that may or may not be criminal in nature but which most definitely take a dim view of child molesters marrying their daughters.

Next week, Rhode Island!

(I honestly can’t think of a high-ranking military official who really paid any cost for fucking up. Ollie North comes to mind, but whatever consequences he faced that I’m too lazy to look up were at best temporary)

bk109

Eh, I was thinking less along the lines of “run of the mill corruption” (Menendez) or creeps (Weiner, Eichorn) and more.. y’know, the ones responsible for manufacturing pretexts to wage wars that cost the lives for millions (cumulative) after ’45.
Or the people involved with Waco or Ruby Ridge.
Or the ones in power that didn’t interfere with Fox when they cancelled Firefly!

LemonJello

Are there any examples, from anywhere, of the rich or people in power being punished (other than the high speed lead injection method)?

Darkest Timeline Zack Morris

That’s the whole thing. There is a oath to citizenship, but the current fascist version of ICE is punishing people trying to do things the right way bu attacking petition seekers in court. They’re spending zero effort deporting actual criminals, and only attacking people who are actually trying to live their lives.
If there was a legitimate path to tax-paying citizenship that forgave illegal immigration in exchange for a fine or community service, then we could put this to bed.
Instead, they’re telling ludicrous lies that they’re stealing our jobs, and that outrageous home prices are because they’re stealing our homes.

For this year’s dip into the 30s in south florida we have permission to bag iguanas and drop them off at designated locations. Was cold and windy enough for us to take in the two outside cats and have them in the laundry room. Have to follow door airlock protocol cuz they dont get along that well with the indoor cats but so far so good.

Horatio Cornblower

If you set the outdoor cats up with a basic shelter, (we have a couple of kitty carriers wrapped and filled with blankets, on a shelf wrapped with a couple of tarps and yes it does look like shit), they’ll be fine in the colder weather.

I had to “build” that one because our former adopted cat was basically a feral, and if she spent more than 12 hours in the house she’d start pissing everywhere. Really ungrateful, even for a feline.

Gatoraids

have a couple of little kitty apartments on our patio tables and some warm pads they are usually fine with. was pretty gusty last night too with winds 15-25 with up to 40 last night. did a spot check on them outside last night and as soon as they saw me they were pretty vocal about the idea of coming in. will see if they want to go out around noon to remind them to be on best behavior
