Eastbound and Waaaay Down: 2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Season Preview (and Tuesday Open Thread)

2025 PREDICTION: 9-7-1

2025 REALITY:  8-9, which in Tampa and Atlanta’s case was NOT good enough to win the division.

I bitched about the NFC South last week, so I won’t belabor the point, but imagine a division where a sub-.500 record goes to a three-way tiebreak AND YOU MISS OUT. A true ménage a trois of failure

I made fun of Tampa in last year’s season preview for being utterly content with the status quo: barely winning the Remedial Football division and then promptly exiting the first round of the playoffs with a just-happy-to-be-there wave.

Whelp, the Bucs threw me a curveball by barely NOT winning the division and getting a head-start on missing the second round by not playing in the first round at all. Presumably the Glazers put the money they saved on travel and bonuses toward servicing 23 seconds of interest on their Manchester United debt.

It was especially delicious because Tampa went into the bye week at 6-2, which is NFC South for “insurmountable lead.” We’re not talking about this collapse more because, a. no one can muster half a fuck about this division, including the teams therein, and b. when you compete (technically) with the Falcons, the Choke Artist Throne is permanently occupied.

2026 Big Damn Changes:

Relatively few changes. Again. Again.

They lost Mike Evans to San Francisco and Lavonte David to his recliner. David made the better decision. Imagine being an elderly wideout (33!) coming off a season of three crippling injuries (hamstring, concussion, broken clavicle) and deciding that Santa Clara offers a brighter future. When your choices come down to MRSAville and The Substation, it’s time to pull the big yellow Eject handle, Mike.

Apparently David and Evans weren’t outliers, they were just the first guests at the party to catch a cab. Defensive keystone Vita Vea and offensive loadbearing structure Baker Mayfield both want out too, after the Bucs’ management apparently pissed on both of their contract requests. I’ll concede that the Mayfield thing may be a motivational ploy: Angry Baker might be a better bet than Whatever The Fuck Last Year Baker was. His accuracy went to shit, even though his receivers dropped the fewest balls of his career. Yes, he was missing Old Man Evans and Chris Godwin (again) for most of the season. But Evans is gone and Godwin didn’t get a new cybernetic ankle in the offseason, so Mayfield is likely facing the same situation this year.

Chris Godwin’s full name is Rod Christopher Godwin Jr. Rod God. For a guy who gets assfucked by the Universe as much as he’s been the last couple years, a male porn star name seems a bit too on the nose.

Or wherever.

The secondary was the glaring weakpoint in 2024 and they did essentially nothing to upgrade it in 2025. Unsurprisingly, they continued to get gashed, ranking in the bottom third of the league in most passing defense categories. Accordingly, Todd Bowles has shaken things up by…promoting one of his backup cornerbacks to a starter?

David was the leading tackler on the team and ranked third in sacks behind…Vita Vea. They replaced him with Alex Anzalone from Detroit, which I always read as “Analzone” and therefore fits nicely with the Male Porn Star theme.

On the upside, they drafted Reuben Bain to replace Haason Reddick at outside linebacker. Clear upgrade, even if he has more an Old Jewish Guy name.

SCHEDULE CONSIDERATION:

Per last year:

It must be nice starting a year being spotted 4 wins.

The schedule otherwise is very, very Maybe. They start with the Bengals before Joe Burrow can get injured, but then get home games against the Browns and Vikings. November at night in Chicago could be brutal, but they have one (1) cold weather game in the second half of the season (Baltimore in December).

2026 PREDICTION:

I mean, I’d be stupid to pick anything other than 9-8 or 8-9, right?

I actually think the party is finally over for Todd Bowles in Tampa. Too many years trying the same shit, with the only significant changes being two major departures and the two most important remaining players wishing they could depart.

8-8-1, Bowles get shitcanned.

I wonder how much starting your career on the Browns depresses career earnings for a QB?

blaxabbath

I hope for more Sam Darnold reclamation stories. Maybe Kyler in MIN, for example.

I want QBs drafted to ARI and CLE to just be like, “I’m hereto not get hurt for a contract minute. I’ll stick around until a real team gives me the rock.” Do like guys in college who are just waiting for their shot in the NFL.

Fronkenshteen

Took a spin around the NFL playoff futures page on the FanDuel and put together a parlay with 5 of the longer-ish shots (+20073):

  • TENNESSEE to MAKE the AFC playoffs
  • TAMPA BAY to MAKE the NFC playoffs
  • CAROLINA to MAKE the NFC playoffs
  • PHILADELPHIA to MISS the NFC playoffs
  • BALTIMORE to MISS the AFC playoffs

Hopefully, the combination of this and my wife’s fantasy squadron ought to be enough to distract me from the horror of reality. Presumably the New York Jets, as always, will not.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Seems like you’ve got your work cut out for you taking two teams from the NFC South.

Doktor Zymm

The Jets are fo peeling your eyeballs by staring directly into the void without special glasses

Night all!

The universe and this miserable timeline has seen fit to take Lucy Davis, better known as Dawn from The Office (UK), who has just revealed her battle with terminal, inoperable, stage 4 breast cancer, which has now metastasized throughout her body. She is 53 years old, and has no idea how much time she has left. Everything sucks.

Michelle Tafoya’s gonna win the GOP primary for MN Senate.

She’ll be stomped by the Dem (probably Peggy Flanagan) in November. Still embarrassing for humanity.

Man, I could go for a cheeseburger, I wonder if Burger King is still open.

2Pack

So you’re predicting a Jon Gruden comeback for TB in ’27?

ArmedandHammered

Speaking of past broadcasters, has anyone else seen Nick Cage as Madden in the upcoming biopic? Scary.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Agree with the prediction, but do they fire Bowles midseason or after the season wraps?

blaxabbath

I’m gonna pack a little bowl here in a minute. Maui Wowie, because I shop local.

ArmedandHammered

That is my strain of choice at the moment as well.

blaxabbath

Mike Evans is taking the Richard Sherman retirement year. Hang out on a loaded roster, make the Super Bowl, and be a complete liability for the entire championship game.

Redshirt

I make a joke questioning Cleveland’s sadness credentials and they counter with their depth chart and QB1 being an exclusive disjunction.

Gatoraids

theyre going to sit on each other shoulders like Master Blaster

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

And wallow around in pigshit? Yeah, sounds about right for the Browns.

I regret to inform you that Cincinnati is still standing.

ArmedandHammered

Of course, the factory of sadness is eternal.

Redshirt

Huh, those fools in Cleveland need a factory to make their sadness. In Cincinnati, our sadness is self-sustaining.

ArmedandHammered

Yours is artisinal, free-range sadness, organic and all natural, Pure enough to be sold at Whole Foods.

BugEyedBoo

NWS in Wilmington OH is evidently so understaffed/overworked that they’re not 100% sure if a tornado blew through town here in Columbus, or if it was just plain-old 100 mph straight-line winds.

Evening bitchachos!, sorry I missed last weeks Hall of Shame game, but with no power, it were not possible. I hope to be around more as I seem to be becoming more social again and have started using capital letters again.

ballsofsteelandfury

I fucking love the word “bitchachos” !

Doktor Zymm

It makes me think of nachos, but bitchy ones

Gumbygirl

Always happy to see you!

BrettFavresColonoscopy

When did you move to Puerto Rico?

ArmedandHammered

I wish, been cutting screen time, spending more time with wife, getting over my self inficited snit at the unfairness of the universe.

Gumbygirl

The universe is unfair? That explains everything!

ArmedandHammered

Yeah, I just have to get over it, was just an extremely rough patch and I needed to pull up my big boy pants and get on with life.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to have you back, but you know how we feel about pants.

ArmedandHammered

My big boy pants are metaphorical! I am not a heretic and adhere strickly to the no pants rule!

ballsofsteelandfury

They’re really fucking Mayfield over. It’s probably back to the Creamsicle days…

ArmedandHammered

You expected different?

Redshirt

(pinches bridge of nose)
He’s going to end up in Pittsburgh, isn’t he? Pittsburgh is going to .500 themselves to an above average quarterback with something to prove.

I hate this reality.

ballsofsteelandfury

I would fucking love that

Redshirt

It’s either Steelers or Rams, IMO. Only wildcard is if Chargers decide to hit the Abort button and give up on Herbert.

ballsofsteelandfury

That’s Mr. Beer to you….

Doktor Zymm

And only Rams if the elk semen or whatever they’re injecting into Stafford’s back stops working
