Your “Time Wounds All Heels” Thursday Evening Open Thread

NFL Notes:

  • Can you believe “Hard Knocks” has been around 16 years?
    • This year’s candidates include the Cowboys, Giants & Jags.
      • Teams with a first-year head coach aren’t supposed to be considered, but the combination of Urban Meyer & Trevor Lawrence makes them an attractive selection.
        • Also, the Khans are desperate for respectable attention.
  • Your QB news round-up:
    • Florio is desperate to make up a story, as he recounts an Athletic story about a tempestuous meeting from November between Russell Wilson & the offensive coaching staff.
      • “[I]t’s not a question of if but when the two sides go their separate ways.”
      • If it does come to pass, Wilson apparently has a four-team list that he’d drop his no-trade clause for:
        • Cowboys, Saints, Raiders and Bears.
          • These require specific circumstances to evolve on each team before anything becomes serious.
    • Art Rooney wants Ben under center in 2021.
      • “Ben assured me that he is committed to coming back to help us win, and I told Ben that we would like to have him back to help us win a championship.”
    • As usual, the Raiders waited too long – no one wants to trade for Marcus Mariota.
      • The sticking point is his contract: a $10 million sign, plus incentives worth up to $12 million, making him a very expensive backup.
      • If they cut him, the Raiders save $11.35 million with no cap penalty.

To their credit, nfl.com has a very good long-form piece questioning whether race is still a factor for black quarterbacks.

Marlin Briscoe
  • The answer is” yes, but…”
    • The best synopsis comes from – of all people – Tony Dungy:
      • “Rather than say, ‘Tony Dungy, your skill set doesn’t fit us,’ or, ‘Warren Moon, your skill set doesn’t fit us,’ it is, ‘No, I’m going to change my offense to fit Kyler Murray,’ ” Dungy said. “Or, ‘I’m going to take Russell Wilson and adjust my offense around him.’ That’s good coaching, and that’s what we’re doing now.”
  • When you still have old school guys like Bill Polian, however, who think Lamar Jackson should have been converted to Wide Receiver ‘because of his athleticism’, it goes to a deeper bias present in modern sports.
    • Plus, the previous draft year – 2017 – was the year that two of the three quarterbacks selected in the first round were Black.
      • Both Patrick Mahomes (10th overall) and Deshaun Watson (12th) were taken after Mitchell Trubisky (second), whom the Bears traded up from third to get.
  • Marlin Briscoe, the first black player to start an NFL game at QB, only got to do so because the Broncos starter in 1968, Steve Tensi, broke his collarbone.
    • When drafted out of Nebraska in 1968, Briscoe was converted from QB to Cornerback.
    • He started five games in 1968, and was traded to Buffalo in 1969 when he agitated to challenge for the starting job.
      • Buffalo had Jack Kemp, so it was clearly a “fuck you” trade, and Briscoe accepted conversion to Wide Receiver.
    • He won two Super Bowls with the Dolphins.
  • I’ll end by tying Polian’s bias into this statement from the article from one of the greatest QBs I ever got to see play live:
    • “We’ve reached a point with the masses where race isn’t as big an issue, but there are people who are very uncomfortable with the fact that their quarterback is African American and making all this money and being endorsed the way they’re being endorsed,” said Warren Moon.
      • “There’s always going to be that certain percentage of our population that feels that way.”

I’m at 51. Make sure to put your picks in for the championship pool. Weird format this year with no page playoffs.

Just did. The rest of you guys are kicking my ass. There’s an entry called “Brick’s picks” and I wonder if that’s our Brick. It has 54…

TL;DR of Ken Burns’ Vietnam: Hey, nothing has worked. Let’s double down and add more troops!

Viva La Tabula Raza

It’s weird, the Vietnam War is a lot “closer” in my experience than just TV documentaries. My dad was with the 1st Mobile Comms Squadron, stationed at Clark AB in the Philippines, 1964-66. Me and my mom were living there, while dad would deploy for 90 days at a time from Clark to the various air bases that the US was setting up in Thailand and VN to organize and set up comms in those years. I did kindergarten and 1st grade there in the PI. The base hospital at Clark was one of the first stops for wounded troops when they got med-evaced from Viet Nam. I remember I had to go to the ER there once when I got bit by a rodent, and getting kind of freaked out by seeing these wounded troops missing limbs and/or having yards of stitches where they had been wounded. Pretty eye opening experience for a 6 year old. Also, the old man has some pretty interesting stories about his experiences over on the mainland in Thailand, Laos, and VN. Some of them are pretty funny, actually.

I guess because of my early “involvement” in the war, as it were, I followed events pretty closely even after we returned to the states. Watching stuff like the Ken Burns show, I’m more like “Yeah, I remember that happening” than “no shit, that actually happened?!?” From Tet to My Lai to Nixon ordering the Christmas bombing to the mining of Haiphong Harbor to the Mayaguez to the release of the POWs to the helos evacuating the embassy, I was fucking paying attention. Even as a kid.

bk109

Same^… but with the US bombings of Yugoslavia in ’99, when I also learned a really important lesson – “precision guided munitions” only really exist in the glossy brochures : (and for the record, that was like a couple of houses away from one of my grandparents’ )

Viva La Tabula Raza

I was TDY at Aviano in early 99, maybe I saw the plane or planes that bombed your gran’s neighborhood.

bk109

Small correction, with the “plane or planes that didn’t aim juuuuuuust a bit more wide and hit our Parliament (and/or one of the other Governmental buildings)”… we’d have made those guys’ a bloody monument – the idiots in power at the time literally made a monument for the USAAF personnel that was lost bombing Bulgaria in WW2 in a bid to prove how “cool everyone was with NATO now” 😀
Edit: Also, for the record – an airstrike on Parliament would’ve been considered a good thing (we’re weird like that… just like for the longest time there was an attempt to make a monument to the “Unknown Assassin” that took care of a lot of the first and second gen mafia after ’89 😀 )

I miss the 90s heroin chic thing, even with Cobain copping it the whole thing managed to be way less depressing than the recent opioid epidemic. And how have we not gotten any great music from all the current opioid use? Are Oxy and Fentanyl really so different from heroin that it fucks up all musical talent?

I lived at Ft Meade MD during the late 60s, and had an irrational hatred of the Colts and Unitas. I was over the moon when the Jets beat the Colts in SBIII.

scotchnaut

Way back in the day I happened to watch Warren Moon in the Rose Bowl in his senior year. He was so amazing that I thought he would be starting in the NFL the following year as a rook. When I found out that he ended up in the CFL I thought to myself, “he’s going to tear this league apart!”. He did that and then some.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

He tore that league apart like a certain interloper tore apart a local hobo’s throat!

Today, they are called “Trump voters.”

herodotus450

Time was they were called “Bush voters.” And before that, “Reagan voters.” Hmm I see a pattern forming… all voters are racist!

Viva La Tabula Raza

I’m still scratching my ahead about that pattern.

Warthog

I think all of those elections were leap years. Maybe it has something to do with February 29.

Last edited 3 years ago by Warthog
Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

The good news is that that percentage is decreasing. It ashames me to admit that as a kid I bought into the “Randall Cunningham will never win a Super Bowl because…” coded racist narratives. But I wised up, and there are fewer and fewer fans growing up who are exposed to the same kind of prejudices that dominated when I was young.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I remember that Spike Jonze conversation with Ice Cube about Randall Cunningham in Three Kings. Doug Williams!
