Your “All Killer, No Filler” Sunday Evening Open Thread

I know from the afternoon thread, and the early part of the evening one, that some people were hyped for the Kentucky Derby.

I was gardening at the time, so I missed all the fun & betting. HAIL GAMBLOR!

It may have even gotten him out of bed.

But I saw the replay on the news, and a four-way run to the line seemed like something pretty exciting. But those weren’t the only show ponies on display. Aaron Rodgers showed up, looking every bit the kid who spent his gap year in Europe after finishing the part-time job his dad got him,

if he actually showed interest in his father. Tom Brady made his usual appearance

but he’s no fun unless he’s dragging along a drunken/concussed Gronk or Welker. So – it seemed like kind of a wash.

However, I’m proud to say I joined the ranks of the recently jabbed. As a teacher, I finally got my well-deserved place at the head of the end of the government employees line. I’m not going to say I was sceptical of the process or the vaccine, but I sure wasn’t going to be first. I just wanted to see if anyone turned into a zombie.

I was supposed to get an Astra-Zeneca, but instead got a Pfizer because I was late in the day & they had spares sitting out. Twenty-four hours later, aside from the feeling someone hit my arm with a bat I feel pretty good. I’m hoping that the eventual second dose – in four months, because the Canadian rollout is a clown show – will be about as painful with no other effects.

I just watched an episode of a show called Classic Albums that focussed on Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. What a fucking incredible album. Half the time I was in tears listening to that beautiful music. Sometimes I drink too much.

Gumbygirl

I love that one too. Nothing sounds like it.

Brick Meathook

San Pedro, early this morning

This is a Ford Model 48 with a flathead V-8 but the body contours have been extensively modified so it’s hard to tell what year it is (probably 1935 base)

Gumbygirl

That’s cool.

ballsofsteelandfury

Do you guys realize that this summer is going to be one of the greatest international sports summers in history?

EURO 2020
Copa América
Concacaf Gold Cup
Olympic Games

Gumbygirl

I always watch the Olympics, but the rahrah USA coverage is gross.

NBC’s 2016 Olympics coverage – I wouldn’t call it ‘good’, but it was better that 2012 and 2008. The actually covered a sport or two, instead of three hours of human interest stories. Granted, we (I pay taxes so I can say ‘we’, right?) had some gold medal-quality gymnasts and swimmers for NBC to cover, so they didn’t have to fall back on the story of some Greco-Roman wrestler who overcame plantar warts and erysipelas to compete.

Viva La Tabula Raza

You can remember that? I am impressed! I can’t even remember where the 2016 games were held. 2012 London, I do remember.

Gumbygirl

Erysipelas, yikes! They deserve a medal, but I don’t want to see them. Unclean!

ballsofsteelandfury

I loathe the human interest stories.

I just want to see competition, live and featuring countries other than the US. Is that so hard?

Brick Meathook

I just won an eBay auction for a Sony RX100-5A camera.

Minimum bid was $425 (a very good price) and there was only 1 bid for $425. So I got set to swoop in at the last five seconds with a $435 bid and a $450 max. So I did, right at five seconds.

The auction ended, and I discovered that the first bidder was me. I swooped in and tried to outbid myself. Fortunately eBay accepted the $425 bid.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I guess the important question is did you buy it from yourself?

Gumbygirl

It was a good deal!

Recently re-installed Microsoft Flight simulator. I forgot how much fun pretending to travel can be

Brick Meathook

Flying a real Cessna, even on your very first intro lesson, is much easier than home computer flight simulators.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Last flight sim I was into was Lucas’s Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, 30 years ago, Man that was cool, but looking at what’s available now, it would be like having an Etch-a-Sketch or a Spirograph.

Dunstan

So you’re saying that my victories at Blue Max, after my Commodore 64 finished loading the cassette, wouldn’t translate to modern systems?

Viva La Tabula Raza

You might be able to fly a manned lunar mission with that software?

BugEyedBoo

I came within a hair of buying Red Baron 3D from Good Old Games, but I decided I really didn’t want to make my eyes bleed.

yeah right

While the goals weren’t overly ambitious I’m still happy to report that I accomplished everything I set out to do this weekend.

Small victories.

Dunstan

Me too, but mine were eating and drinking.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I set no goals aside from going to the grocery/pharmacy. All thumbs up.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Stumbled across a 4-episode travelogue up the Nile from Alexandria, apparently to the sources of both Blue and White Niles, on Amazon Prime. Hosted by Joanna Lumley, one-time Bond Girl (OHMSS) and big time TV and movie star over the last 50 years (mostly in Britain). Just starting episode 2. Man, even at her age that is one attractive woman. And she’s pretty funny too.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I think she’s best known for Absolutely Fabulous, on which she was delightful.

Mr. Ayo

Despite my being absolutely fabulous, no one has described me as either “known” or “delightful”.

yeah right

While I don’t know you I find you delightful.

Gumbygirl

He’s a peach!

Viva La Tabula Raza

Well, that was on for 20 years, so that figures. Guess I’ll have to find that on some BBC channel…

Viva La Tabula Raza

Ha! Gives me some perspective on a scene from the first episode I watched this evening, when she was filming a scene on a riverboat with a big old Brit woman and they were drinking clear fluid out of a glass and joking about how it was water and not vodka they were drinking.

I give you Santos’ Laguna mascot.

ballsofsteelandfury

That’s right. They’re the Guerreros / Warriors.

litre_cola

I dislike this team immensely. This game is tight.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Given the mascot, is this another team belonging to Snyder?

Clam chowder: New England, Manhattan, or Rhode Island?

WHO YA GOT?

Brick Meathook

New England: full cream broth
Rhode Island: half cream half broth
Manhattan: full tomato broth
Long Island: half New England half Manhattan
Carolina: full broth no cream
Charleston: Rhode Island style plus crab meat

all made with local clams

Last edited 3 years ago by Brick Meathook
Dunstan

Hmm, all the Rhode Island I’ve seen has been full broth, no cream — what you’re calling Carolina. That’s what I made today.

Anyway, I think I go clear, New England, with Manhattan a very distant third.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Tomato broth? That’s like chili with fucking beans. Fuck that.

Brick Meathook

What is it with Texas and beans in chili?

Beans are fine, and properly served 5-way Cincinnati chili (not those Skyline cheese monstrosity pictures) is really good.

Remember, Texas thinks Ted Cruz is a good senator.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Not all of Texas think Cruz is worth a fuck. Just a slight majority. And they really don’t care for him, he just got a R instead of a D behind his name, which is all that’s required for the morons down here.
The beans/no-beans is a genetic thing, like back in the day when you were Chevy or Ford or Mopar, and nothing could move you from that.

yeah right

New England.

Flawless victory.

Viva La Tabula Raza

grumblegrumblegoddamrightandyourmomagreesgrumblegrumble.

Sharkbait

New England. All day.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Only about two more hours before RIB ROAST time! This afternoon I had chili with chili cheese fritos and it was divine.

litre_cola

Dave Matthews Band has released 40+ live albums??? Are they the new Grateful Dead?

Brick Meathook

And they’re all identical.

Viva La Tabula Raza

They just change the order that the tracks play between albums.

SonOfSpam

They might be in that superfans of both bands make me stabby.

litre_cola

Phish fans nod.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Amateurs.
—Jimi Hendrix (posthumously)

One of my first albums was Hendrix Band of Gypsys, back about ’70. Who Knows and Machine Gun FTW.

litre_cola

That band of gypsies show was fucking amazing. Best track IMO.

Viva La Tabula Raza

A SMSgt that worked for my dad gave me that album as a Christmas present Dec 1970. I guess he was kissing my dad’s ass. I think my dad made it so the guy made CMSgt, so I guess it worked. I loved that record. I think it’s still in the record stand I’m looking at right now across the room.

litre_cola

I definitely had the tapes and later the double CD. It is so good from start to finish.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Odd thing is the album was recorded from 4 shows over two nights around New Years 1970. The original album only contained tracks from the two second-night shows, 3 bonus tracks from the CD re-release in 1991 include one from the first show of the first night and two more from the first show of the second night. Man, the drugs must have been good back then.

litre_cola

Wow, I actually knew that. I am not as burnt out as I thought.

Viva La Tabula Raza

If you are using the info that I provided as a bellwether for your burnt-outedness, you might think heavily about that.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I missed The Derby, too, did Wes Welker run this year?

Dunstan

John Elway disqualified for excessive blood alcohol.

Tiz Mrs GOD’S birthday today, so currently on the couch in a food coma full of cake and beer. Cake is a banana chocolate marble cake from a local bakery. Sooooo good

Re-watching Our Man in Japan this weekend. Still looking for the Balls title card.

Viva La Tabula Raza

There it is!!! Sumo wrestling university! That guide Yujiro needs to have his own show here in the states.

ballsofsteelandfury

Nice!

yeah right

It’s pinot grigio appreciation time. Fun meal today. Chances of hearing about it in a few weeks? 100%.

My mouth still hurts from my wisdom tooth removal.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Me too, and I had mine pulled at the Navy Hospital in Yokosuka Japan in 1983.

blaxabbath

I’ll just kill myself if this is what’s on the horizon.

Viva La Tabula Raza

The pain only returns when I think of it. So, I mostly don’t think of it. I’ve gone through a lot more painful procedures in the ensuing 4 decades.
Weirdest thing for me was the way the holes at the back of your jaw where the teeth were would fill up with mush/kernel shells when you ate popcorn. This must have gone on for a year or more till the holes filled in with living flesh. Gross.

blaxabbath

Fuck that. Get me a noose.

Viva La Tabula Raza

You’re young, this will pass (I was kind of exaggerating, except the part about the hamster-like chewed popcorn storage pouches). Hopefully you’ll live long enough to experience the joys of cataract surgery, angiograms, endoscopies, colonoscopies yadda yadda yadda I can’t remember it all.

Warthog

I feel ya. After years of pain free dental living, in the past 3 years I’ve had 5 crowns, 2 filling replacements, and a root canal. What fun.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Underrated tip: tea bags in the mouth

Not a euphemism for once.

Warthog

Truth.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Pre- or post-surgery? Is this a preventative thing?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Post. Helps the healing.

blaxabbath

Like any type of tea? What’s the reason for this?

Don T

Full mouth means less complaining. Just passing along what my priest said.
