As with yesterday, let’s get down to brass tacks.
San Jose Sharks vs. Vegas Golden Knights
For all intents, this series might be over by the time you read this. Game 2 was Saturday night, and unless I got me some gumption, I updated it to reflect reality, and not the late-Friday whence I typed this. I expect Vegas to win Game 2, albeit not by the touchdown they won Game 1 by.
[Ron Howard voice: they did not win Game 2.]
Anybody who ever suffered through an expansion team earning their stripes with League castoffs has to be furious at how the NHL rigged the system so Vegas wouldn’t suck right out of the gate. But they never expected Gerard Gallant & George McPhee to weave together a team that would challenge for the Cup, not just a playoff spot, in their first year.
It all starts with this guy

Marc-Andre Fleury, last seen looking like this

and letting in enough goals to get benched during the Penguins last Cup run & subsequently left exposed for the expansion draft. Solid goaltending allowed the Knights to build a team around him, and those players all bought into the system that the coaching staff was promoting, and the “good players; great team” ethos turned into the third-best record in the NHL. Flat-out embarrassing the LA Kings got them here, and there doesn’t appear to be much stopping them from getting to the Conference finals.
San Jose, meanwhile, look like a bunch of doomsday preppers who haven’t shaved since Bush 43 was President because they disagreed with how NOBAMA was running things.

Playoff beards don’t count if you started them six years ago.
The only reason to root for the Sharks is so they can play the Jets in the Western Conference final & everyone can have their tortured “West Side Story” jokes.

Prediction: Vegas in six.
Nashville vs. Winnipeg:
They got the Smashville thing started early.

But Winnipeg fans took it like champs.

This should be a barnburner of a series. The two best teams in the regular season meeting in Round Two. Gary Bettman has to be sexually confused by all this, because Nashville succeeding is proof that his decision to prevent that Blackberry douchebag from buying them worked, but Winnipeg succeeding is proof that sometimes teams have to move, and to Canada. And I hope his confused little boner gets infected & falls off; we shall call that rotten little member “Dean”.
Nashville has been on a tear since taking San Jose to Game 7 in 2016. Last year’s Cup final appearance was clearly by a team on the rise & not a one-off fluke. They have fully earned their #1 seed on the strength of four solid lines, a rigid defence, and probably the worst year of Pekka Rinne’s career, which goes to show the overall level of team improvement that they don’t have to rely on him being magical all the time.
As for the Jets, to quote litre_cola, “WOOOOOO JETS! ALL THE WAY, BABY!”

Prediction: Winnipeg in six
