We had my union AGM via GoTo Meeting yesterday, and let me tell you – the Minneapolis riots were better organized. We started late, to make sure everyone got in; we constantly rewound, for people who got confused; and we repeated the same talking points about management.

Christ – what a waste.

I’ve been management, and the belief that we spend our days plotting against the employees is laughable. We were barely more prepared than they were. Most times, people end up talking their way into a grievance while trying to avoid some other scenario.

The exciting parts of the meeting were when they announced people for positions & people furiously unmuted their mics in order to decline the position. Half the table was left unfilled, which is about right.

I, of course, having been management, am Kaepernick’d from ever competing for one of those jobs because I was a turncoat to the movement. Which is fine with me. I gave up my union-bashing a long time ago – I see the need, but when they won’t reform themselves they become just as corrupt – so I just sit in the corner, doing my job & counting down to the pension. At least I enjoy what I do, and the antipathy people feel towards me means I don’t have to get deeply involved in the cause.

Tonight’s … entertainment?:

Honest to God, I don’t know what to recommend.

  • The only sports-related things are
    • ESPN’s “30 for 30” on Lance Armstrong.
      • Episode 2 is on at 9:00PM. (Also on TSN)
    • NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – 7:00 PM | FS1 (Replay)
      • The Food City/Supermarket Heroes 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.
  • ABC has their block of game show remakes, with Family Feud, Press Your Luck & Match Game, starting at 8:00PM.
  • Food Network has their collection of weirdoes making edible food out of inedible ingredients.
  • The Snowpiercer TV show is on TNT at 9:00.
  • Killing Eve, which counts as Canadian content, is at 9:00 on AMC.

Or, you can keep watching the riots from various cities. Maybe someone you love will steal you a lovely dessert.

But enough about what it’s like to have played for a single season in the NFL.

nomonkeyfun

Just got back from the protest that started in Brookyln and made its way at least to Bryant Park in Manhattan.

The crowd was mostly just fed up with the bullshit. There were a couple of assholes. Including one drunk/high white guy that I thought was going to get his ass beat by fellow marchers.

The cops were suprisingly hands off for the most part. They also didn’t seem to be that organized themselves. They could have easily kept us from making to the Manhattan Bridge, but the fucked up and rather than block the entire road and sidewalk, they just formed a square.

It was only the first few blocks on the Manhattan side when they lined all of Bowery and a couple of blocks to keep us from going downtown to Police Plaza/Wall st that seemed to show any advanced thought of keeping us from going where we wanted.

Finally stopped us, at least temporarily by the main Library. A lot of people went home, but the group that kept going split into two and last I saw was heading towards Trump Tower. Don’t know how far they made it, but it was time for me to get out of Dodge at that point.

Also, the way home was my first time on the subway since early February.

Sounds like they did something different rather than just force violent confrontation like many other cities.

Now here is an escapist Jeep truck.

Viva La Tabula Raza

35 years ago, my dad and I restored a 1959 Willys FC-150. Customized the hell out of it, custom flat/stake bed, candy apple red with gold pinstripe flames. Original drivetrain was a dog, could not hit 55 mph on a downhill with a tailwind. Pops ended up selling it to some DMV lady in the Keys when he moved down there in the 90s. Wish he had kept it, but I don’t know why. Very cool but totally worthless.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Learned how to drive a “car” in my uncle’s 1949 Willys. Max. speed was about 50, but it would go anywhere and start when it was very cold.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I learned to drive in my dad’s 1970 Jeepster Commando made by Kaiser right before they sold Jeep to AMC. It had a 225 cubic inch Buick V6, 3-speed manual on the floor, no power features at all, no radio, no AC, rubber mats not carpet, no nothing. He traded his 1964 Corvette convertible in for it when he got assigned to Turkey. We drove that motherfucker all over Europe and Asia Minor and the US and Baja Mexico until he took it with him on his assignment to Iran in the late 70s. In 1978, he ended up selling it to some Iranian guy right before the revolution over there for $500 more than he paid for it new in 1970. It’s probably still being driven by some Revolutionary Guard cats that have removed the roof and mounted a 30 or 50 cal MG in the back. I failed my first driver’s test in it in 1975 in Redlands CA, but passed on the next try with my next door neighbor’s 1963 Galaxie 500 4-door with all options such as PS, PB, and AC.comment image

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

My first driving experience wasn’t nearly that worldly; it was on a 1947 Ford tractor at the ranch, same place that the Jeep was.

Viva La Tabula Raza

My dad was such a dick, he made my mom teach me how to drive that Jeepster. Actually, at age 83, he’s still kind of a dick. Although I did convince him to stop voting Republican back in 1990, he still has the elemental racism of anybody in their 80s.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Maybe he hated that truck…..

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

HA! My gramps was very patient. I think he was in the mode of having his kids be free ranch labor and maybe regretted it a little and was patient with his grand kids.

I’m about to move on from Chihuahuas to plain old Jack Daniels.

Viva La Tabula Raza

After being mostly shut in since mid December, I have figured out that I have become totally agoraphobic. I dread going anywhere, even the weekly grocery/package store runs. The wine bar re-opened, and I have no interesting in doing a cannonball back into the petri dish, playing covid Roullette. I have to go get blood drawn at Quest tomorrow for a bariatric surgery 18-month post-op appointment, and I am dreading the shit out of it.
I have a similar mindset as BBRichard below. Thinking suicide would be the easy way out. Unfortunately, I am a physical coward regarding pain, and more importantly think of how much I would be inconveniencing everyone if I took that option, especially who’s gonna feed and take care of the dogs. So, y’all are stuck with me.

Yeah, there are some good that isn’t being reported. Protesters helping to clean up what the looters destroyed. Cops kneeling in honor of the people killed by cops, or marching with the protesters.

Its giving me some hope to cling to.

litre_cola

The Cinci cops replaced the flag with a Blue Lives Matter flag? That doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Redshirt

They did that? You’re not bullshitting me?

That’s not only completely tone deaf, its also violates the damn Flag Code and pisses on the memory of everyone who fought or died died defending that flag. The real one, the American flag. The one my grandfathers, cousins and aunt fought for and the one my uncle died for.

I’d rather wipe my ass with the Blue Lives Matter flag, let alone raise it under the American flag, let alone replace it. And one week after Memory Day too!

When I was on a supply ship out of Yokosuka, Japan, we would always leave port a week or so after the the battle group pulled out of port, in order to give them some time to use shit up so we could then re-supply them. The day the Midway and escorts left port, the clubs were full of dependent wives from all those ships, looking for some strange for a change. A whole week of target-rich environment for the ‘tang hunters of the USS White Plains AFS-4.

SonOfSpam

Awesome.

If karma’s on our side, may all racist cops be fathers to chocolate babies in nine months.

Big Black Richard

I’m so fucking distraught that I actually WISH I was the type of person to commit suicide. Sadly, I’m stuck here with you goofballs.

Peaceful protest doesn’t work because the powers have learned that they can just ignore it.

Violent protest doesn’t work because the media can easily paint the protesters as the bad guys, and the powers know that they can just ignore these protests too and let them burn themselves out, and normalcy will return.

What does that leave us with, then? No peaceful protest and no violent protest. Someone way more creative than I am is going to have to create a new way to protest, or we have no chance to change a damn thing.

And once everything dies down, MPLS police WILL take revenge for burning down their precinct. Revenge will be brutal, it will be overkill, and it will absolutely be inevitable.

FML. Maybe I will get lucky and have a massive heart attack today.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I don’t know what to say other than that I am here, and I am listening.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I should have said “we”.

SonOfSpam

Wish I could tell you “no, you’re wrong” but you’re among friends here at the very least.

Hoping against hope that public sentiment turns against authoritarianism just a little.

ballsofsteelandfury

You are correct. The solution is more minorities getting involved in local politics.

SonOfSpam

Yes, but that’s a long slow road. The solution is for us (whoever “us” may be) to stop enabling cops as jackbooted assholes. Among many other things.

ballsofsteelandfury

And you can only do that when you control their budgets. Too many people think short term and don’t bother with the long term solution that will actually work.

SonOfSpam

Yep, for sure. All those police have Avengers-level body armor and doctors don’t have face masks. Need to stop glorifying the wrong “heroes.”

Covalent Blonde

Speaking from inside the hospital system, I am pretty fed up with all of the rotator cuff injuries from my colleagues jerking themselves off about how awesome they are and how hard it is for us when we are all in the cushy position of having actual jobs, the scientific knowledge to comprehend and mitigate risk, and an entire industry designed with catastrophic-level disaster contingencies in place to try to keep us safe.

I buy my ramen and lettuce from heroes.

Big Black Richard

Balls, I disagree. Places like Atlanta, Detroit and San Antonio have huge minority presences in local politics. Do you think the police forces in those cities are any less brutal than the police in much whiter American cities? I assure you that it is not the case.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I think Bulworth had it right for the solution:

“All we need is a voluntary, free-spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction. Everybody just gotta keep fuckin’ everybody ’til they’re all the same color.”

SonOfSpam

That’s the Tiger Woods Plan.

Senor Weaselo

I’m sorry, Richard. You’re among friends at least. It’s the best we got, unfortunately.

Redshirt

Don’t give in to hate and despair. This country didn’t get founded by defeating a king ordained by Divine Right and the most powerful empire in the world by having a more powerful army or making an ally of their enemy’s enemy. They did it by sticking together.

Also, we’ve had BLEERGH made a deal with Charon and Cerberus. You’re stuck with us until the end of the universe or until the Bengals win a playoff game, whichever comes first.

Don T

Corrupt authorities win not by sheer power, but by people being indifferent or feeling overwhelming resignation. Hell, that’s half of the colonialism playbook. Solidarity helps, it’s an act of dignity. You are not alone, man.

I wasn’t in LA for the Rodney King riots, but I do remember racist assholes chortling about how “those animals” were so stupid that they destroyed their own neighborhoods instead of the ones where the white people lived.

Well, I guess “they” took your advice. (I don’t really think that — I think it’s further evidence that this is mostly opportunism rather than spontaneous rage.)

yeah right

I was here and this feels comparable. We’ve got some organized shit going on right now directly in front of my house. Stay friendly folks.

Gratliff

It feels to me like the “Nature coming back” thing. The pandemic killing outdoor activity drastically changed the damage we do to the environment as a whole and it was a drop in a bucket compared to what it would take to make any meaningful change to our trajectory. Pressure on the police state to change feels immense right now, but we’re well within the margins of it being a big joke to authorities. To effect any meaningful change, you’d need the most MAGA of MAGA chuds to be willing to join in and support protest movements AND convince the vast majority of capital interests to pressure the system into police reform. We’re still at a point where a significant portion of the country would approve of tanks rolling over protestors, if they even care enough to pay attention to what’s going on.

ballsofsteelandfury

I was here and it’s different. First off, Rodney King was from here. This is not really LA’s fight. The looting is pure opportunism.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

That’s the sense that I get too.

SonOfSpam

My now-wife lived in Long Beach, and we hightailed it to Vegas for a few days. That was an awful time (again) due to awful people.
