Your “Everyone’s Still On Holiday” Tuesday Evening Open Thread

NFL Notes:

it’s a quiet day, full of Aaron Rodgers shitpieces ahead of the golf tonight. To wit:

https://twitter.com/MattyHip/status/1412450754389020672

So here’s what’s available.

  • Well, they’ve added the Shrine Bowl to Pro Bowl week (Feb. 1-6).
    • It will now be played February 3rd in Las Vegas, in primetime & broadcast on the NFL Network.
      • No word on NIL guarantees for the players yet.
    • It makes sense, because most league officials will be in Vegas for the Super Bowl events, so bringing the scoutable players to them makes everyone’s lives easier.
      • It will also have an effect on the Senior Bowl, which is scheduled for February 5th in Mobile, AL.
        • Which game will teams send their senior scouts to, and which players might have to decide which one to attend.
    • Advertorial announcement:
      • The East-West Shrine Bowl, which supports Shriners Hospitals for Children, is the nation’s oldest college all-star game, having been played since 1925.
    • [DFO] road trip?

  • On the heels of Trevor Lawrence signing his rookie contract, Florio has made an interesting point about how the new CBA has affected signing values.
    • Trevor Lawrence (the first overall pick in 2021) inked a four-year, $36.8 million deal.
      • The full amount was guaranteed at signing.
    • Sam Bradford (the first overall pick in 2010) signed a six-year, $78 million contract, with a maximum value of $86 million.
      • Of that amount, $50 million was fully guaranteed at signing.

The 2011 Draft was the first one with the new contract rules in place for rookie contracts.

  • According to Spotrac, Bradford made just over $130 million in his nine-year career. It ranks him 19th all-time as of today.
    • FYI – the highest paid of all time is currently Drew Brees at just under $270 million, but once the season starts he will be passed by Tom Brady.
      • And that doesn’t take into account the estimated $60 million in home-team discounts he gave the Patriots during his career there.

Tonight’s sports:

  • NHL:
    • Tomorrow night in Tampa
  • NBA:
    • Bucks at Suns – 9:00pm | ABC /
  • MLB:
    • Brewers at Mets – 7:00pm | ESPN / TSN3
    • Blue Jays at Orioles – 7:00pm | Sportsnet
    • Yankees at Mariners – 10:00pm | ESPN / TSN3
    • Nationals at Padres – 10:00pm | Sportsnet1
  • Futbol:
    • Copa America 2021:
      • Semifinal – Argentina vs. Colombia – 9:00pm | FS1 / TSN5
  • Made for TV golf:
    • “The Match” – Mickelson and Brady vs. DeChambeau and Rodgers – 5:00pm | TNT / TBS
      • It’s in Big Sky, MT, and has a 777-yard par-5.
  • Wrestling:
    • NXT presents “The Great American Bash” – 8:00pm | USA / Sportsnet360
      • It’s really the usual TV show gussied up for ratings, but dropping his trademark fight over it allowed Cody Rhodes to gain rights to using the Rhodes name.
      • Besides, here’s what The Bash used to be:

I just read that Bruce Jenner once read for the role of Ted Stryker in Airplane: The Movie!

Now people can bash this timeline all they want, and most of it’s deserved, but I think we can all agree that it’s nowhere close to the worst possible timeline.

Dunstan

Surely we can agree on that.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Should I drink and watch Disenchantment? Yes. Yes I should.

BC Dick

Should always drink. And watch what comes.
I’m in the sweet spot. It comes less often the more one drinks it seems. I am watching Double Indemnity instead of disengagement. It showed itself to me so I took it.

Gumbygirl

Nobody played a bad girl better than Barbara Stanwyck. She is my absolute favorite actress of all time.

Gumbygirl

How did your first day go? That’s always awkward, now matter how outgoing you are. Torture if you’re shy. But you sir, are awesome and they are lucky to have you!

Holy shit that Tina keeper!

WITH THE HIP THRUST!

ballsofsteelandfury

Three saves. That’s incredible.

Mr. Ayo

Amateur.

Horatio Cornblower

If I were Colombia I might have tried a shot to the left.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Found the FARC sympathizer.

Mr. Ayo

Nailed It!

— B. Walsh

Horatio Cornblower

That needs to be a red card.

Horatio Cornblower

I question the Colombian strategy of piling up yellow cards and giving Mesi as many free kicks as possible.

Horatio Cornblower

Just count Phillies runs.

Horatio Cornblower

I haven’t seen this many random Colombians taking shots to the chest since…Monday, actually.

Horatio Cornblower

I haven’t seen Argentina make offensive decisions that bad since that whole thing with the Falklands.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

My thought about people who had the opportunity to get vaccinated, declined it, and are now headed to the I.C.U.

I was just talking to my dad about that. We have 8.6 billion people on the planet, which if we’re being honest is probably about 7.7 billion too many. As far as I’m concerned, if there’s a deadly plague running rampant and you won’t get a readily available vaccine for it because of “muh freedum!”, well, Darwin wrote a book for a reason.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

My own dad is one of those people, so I struggle with this.

Horatio Cornblower

OK, OK. 7.699 billion.

Gumbygirl

This is pretty much how I feel

Apparently K-Mart was selling “Ashley Babbit: American Patriot” shirts. It was a third-party thing that they promptly took it down, but now I’m thinking I should upload one with an image of her face and one of the following two slogans:

I stormed the Capitol and tried to overthrow the U.S. Government and all I got was this lousy t-shirt and a bullet to the throat…

OR

I stormed the Capitol and tried to overthrow the U.S. Government and all I got was what I deserved.

Horatio Cornblower

I will buy the second one.

Viva La Tabula Raza

me too

Gumbygirl

Agree. There is also the evergreen “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” Dumb bitch. Got exactly what she deserved.

Horatio Cornblower

By the way ma’am, that is a quality banner.

Warthog

Indeed.

Gumbygirl

Thanks! It’s good because it’s true!

ballsofsteelandfury

Tina already up 1-0 on the Cafeteros.

Horatio Cornblower

Not anymore

Senor Weaselo

Why is The Match on TBS, TNT, TruTV, FalsTV, History Channel, and inside your retinas?

SonOfSpam

It just means Tom Brady’s losing on five channels.

ThurberHerder

Few more decades and Tom might actually become the bread winner in that family

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

“This contest where one wins bread, where can I sign up?” – Andy Reid, holding a handful of fake ID’s.

Horatio Cornblower

Eh, as much bread as Andy wins Britt will just spend on booze, pills, and out-of-court settlements.

BC Dick

It’s all a swindle. The players are all underpaid. The free market should reign. Remove that CBA and this Joey Lawrence character would be making adjusted Jamarcus Russell money.

More than that cause there’d be no cap. If I have a mining company and the top end miner needs a pile of cash to leave his college mining outfit I sure wouldn’t have to fit him under my pro mining cap for criminy’s sake

ballsofsteelandfury

That all goes to show that the NFLPA are a bunch of idiots.

Dunstan

I don’t know the specific history here, but traditionally the way it’s gone with sports leagues is that the owners want a salary cap. The players push for as big a share of the revenue as they can. I think in the specific case of the NFL, the deal in the 90s was “salary cap in exchange for expanded free agency rights.”

NFLPA is generally seen as the weakest of the major sports unions. Players have short careers, so a lot of the rank-and-file aren’t really up for sacrificing 33% of their career in a lengthy strike. And ownership knows it.

BC Dick

Yeah they get blasted in the ass. Every other major sport gets fully guaranteed. Except maybe jockeys. They take their pay in double bubble and suites at the Hyatt. And ass blasting.

Dunstan

Oh yeah, it’s the non-guaranteed contracts that are the true symptom of the NFLPA’s weakness.

It seems like that’s changing a bit. And certainly players seem to have wised up to the game teams were playing of offering contracts that had tons of money that would never, ever be paid, but that generated headlines about “Player X signs record-breaking deal for a jagillion dollars!” that maybe satisfied the player’s ego and his agent’s reputation, while the team snickered behind his back.

Warthog

Top end minor?

/Matt G. has joined the chat.

BC Dick

Top end? I prefer my minors on the bottom.
