So, yesterday was Record Store Day, and I picked myself up a little vinyl treat.
That’s right – the Foo Fighters released a special album for the day – called “Hail Satin“.
It’s five Gibb songs sung as disco covers & five live versions of songs from their “Medicine at Midnight” album. I’ve got to say, as a fan, they are all fantastic.
Of course, disco is having another moment. July 12th wasn’t just Viva’s & my birthday, it was also the anniversary of “Disco Demolition Night”.
Depending on who you ask, it was simply a novelty promotion by legendary character Bill Veeck to draw fans to watch his miserable team, or a racist & homophobic reaction to the popularity of disco music in American culture. Given the rise of BLM last year and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this year, this is another historical incident that has been revisited in light of the new era we are in.
(If you want to read tons more, just type “disco sucks as racist” into Google & go nuts. I don’t feel like belaboring the point on a Sunday evening.)
What can’t be denied is that the Bee Gees were the target for plenty of (musical) abuse for a good period of time, but have since come out the other side appreciated as musicians & songwriters, an example brought full-circle by the record I purchased yesterday.
Tonight’s sports:

Oh lord, the pickin’s are slim tonight, and the NBA doesn’t resume until Tuesday. That puts tomorrow as somehow worse.
I’m out, nighty night fellow kids
Ok, this flight is only an hour late, so I’ll just be a little bitch about it in the morning
I’m getting ready to go on a rampage.
Oh trust me not a real one. I am a responsible and peace loving man.
I mean a legal rampage and I shall not lose. Get out of the way motherfuckers a decorated combat veteran is coming in and I don’t care whether I live or die.
That last part was very melodramatic.
Please don’t sue Lacey.
Lacey or Lucie?
People still here or we done? Reading a good book set in Singapore in the 30s. It is kinda weird feeling apprehensive about what fictional characters are going to have to face in WW2
Just waiting for the end of El Salvador’s loss. Too drunk to start on my next book, Who They Was. That’ll be next week’s effort.

Mr. Ayo got his goal in the 1st half.
I’ve always been accused of being quick.
I can’t deal with tomorrow being Monday. I just have to make it through a month and a half before a proper 2 week vacation. Six weeks.
You are going to need a few mental health days until then. I’ll write you a note.
Appreciated
My last vacation was in Feb until this week. I nearly had a full blown breakdown in May.
Yeah, a day or two just doesn’t cut it, although it helps. When I was in Macedonia I was caught off-guard by being happy. How messed up is that?
I am at my inlaws and am happy. I feel you.
Tomorrow howevah, wine country sans child. Then will be real happiness.
Wait, 2 week vacations are a thing?!? WTF!!!
Just you wait until you hear about what they have in Europe
I’ve heard.

Gold Cup Flushables. To the optimist in us all! https://youtu.be/xi42c1hNnz4
I am watching at the inlaws on their deck while everyone is inside. Bliss.
Power is off in Big Bear, but no rain yet. Thunderboomers a plenty, I love it!
Just got a flash flood notification until 7:15.
Flashed boobs >> Flash floods
Flash photography goes in the middle, but not exactly in the middle. Not sure about flash mobs
As long as no dry lightning!
There’s rain all around me, just not on my house yet.
I just always think of a fabuloUs hairy gay man when you mention where you reside.
Plenty of bears here in paradise!
*Sets calendar reminder in 9 months*
That ship has sailed.
Like a lady!
It rained while we were driving through Galiota! Like, legitimate rain.
Ugh, back to a little work travel and already dealing with flight delays.
And how come home of you told me Priority Pass pulled that weird Denver Airport restaurant from the program?
Flight schedules are half imaginary right now, none of the airlines are staffed up and loads are full. International is worse because the travel restrictions change every few days. I’m guessing you got caught up in the delays from the east coast storms?
The restaurants in SFO are still on PP, lucky for me I have 2 non-amex ones so I can use them. DIA is a crap airport anyway.
No disagreement on any of this, except i think this (like many things) was Texas’s fault.
I am down with blaming everything on Texas
Balls, Club Leon is looking more and more like a NASCAR uniform with so many ads on them.
Most Mexican teams are. Except for Toluca, of course, as we’re sponsored by…. our own website.
🤦♂️
Even Mrs. Cola asked about that last campaign….
Having a glass of cloudy sake, nawt going to post a picture because I already made all the jokes about it looking like semen when I poured it
Which tastes better?
Depends what you’re in the mood for I suppose, sweet or savory
Time to steam up some mussels in beer for dinner! Beer… is there anything it can’t do?
It can even power your car!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kaSrtFa9fdA
Dark beer, a little chorizo, and sprinkled with blue cheese- sounds weird, but it’s one of my favorite ways to do mussels.
I totally want to try that
It’s a good one! Fry the chorizo with onions in a little oil, dump in beer and mussels, steam until they open, and sprinkle with cheese and some herb, cilantro is good. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
On the list!
I kept it boring — onion, garlic, ginger, potatoes, a little black and aleppo pepper, then a wheat beer
I’m not bored.
Just checked the AFL standings to see if a bunch of miracles happened in a row and HOLY SHIT!
Right??
Well, I’m back from a little vacation through California. We went to Davis, Napa, Sacramento, Paso Robles, and Lompoc. The Napa day was an interesting one; after walking in at a Thomas Keller restaurant for lunch (Ad Hoc) we spent the afternoon hanging around with a couple of judges in one of their chambers. Then dinner in Sacramento that night.
Lompoc is kind of a shithole, but seems like it might have the best weather in all of California.
Tell me more about the wine.
We actually didn’t do any tastings. Bought a bottle of Halter Ranch at the grocery store cause we knew we liked it, and were planning to stop at Jessup in Napa but didn’t feel like it.
Lompoc has some decent wine-tasting available, as long as you don’t mind that the tasting rooms are in strip malls and not beautiful wine estates. Also a really good taco joint that doubles as a butcher shop.
We walked in the wrong direction so basically ended up in Crackton for a short bit – mostly it was a nondescript town. Kinda dumpy though.
I’ve been to Sacramento several times. It’s never struck me as a place people would go on vacation to.
We were vising the Dr. Mrs. brother (Baby Judge) in Davis, so Sac-town was just for dinner.
Gotcha! Makes sense.
You drove right past and didn’t say hi? No worries, my town is pretty lame, and this has been a stressful week with correspondingly crap moods so it is probably for the best
We got gas nearby, does that count? I left a pair of sunglasses on the ground for you at the gas station, didn’t you find them?
That was you? Thanks!
I went to Walmart (first mistake, as there were just a few of us masked). I asked the person in the cookware area where the ramekins are. She said she wasn’t sure and then asked what is a ramekin.
To be fair to her, I don’t know what ramekins are either. Is it like a trivet?
*small bowl for dips etc
And yummy desserts
Ballsy por que esta juego esta en L.A.?
On laptop so don’t bitch about the accents
Because México is still in relative lockdown and they make way more money in the US with these games than in México.
Blue Cruise should have had one there.
I was living in Moline Illinois when disco demolition took place. We had just seen Steve Dahl (radio WLUP Chicago) and the Teenage Radiation at a 4th of July concert in Rockford Illinois featuring The Babys, REO Speedwagon, The Outlaws, Cheap Trick and Bon Scott era AC/DC. I was full on disco sucks back in the day. Didn’t know it had racist elements but it doesn’t surprise me at all.
If you think about it, it’s the same reason why EDM is not the prevalent music style today.
There have been groups putting out amazing stuff since the 90s and yet they get no recognition in the mainstream.
It’s racist and homophobic.
The thing that happened to KROQ is horrible. I’ve always listened because they always played new music. Without them I would have never discovered. Silversun Pickups, Young the Giant, Grouplove, and many others.
There are great bands out there, working they’re asses off but no radio play. I respect the hell out of Billie Eilish because she has real talent but now it seems like every song features a “breathy little dip shit” – my phrasing- that really has no reason to reach the airwaves apart from the obvious.

I fucking love these guys.

This song was overplayed when it came out. Then they did a Black Keys and used it for so many ads.
And Vampire fucking Weekend!

Ahem,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KmIMuLh4Vs
I finished the Richard Blade autobiography and KROQ died when the program director decided that grunge was going to be the music of the future instead of EDM. Richard wanted to play EDM, but they wouldn’t let him.
Guess which genre is still alive and thriving and which one is dead?
[raises hand]
“I know, I know!”
– some guy Courtney Love hired
Reading the above link makes me think that a lot of it was not explicitly racist and homophobic* but man did the racists and homophobes sure get on board in a hurry.
I didn’t like it first time around, but it wasn’t because of race. It was those hideous clothes and weirdass hair. Not to mention the dancing. Oh God, the dancing! But I like some of it now.
You didn’t like the John Travolta Saturday Night Fever dance?
No. And I like dance

I’m not even clicking on that. I can tell from the still that girl is neither sexy nor much of a dancer!
For the record, I think Canada got a screw job in that soccer game.
I figure a more mature team would have converted at least one of the three great opportunities that I saw. They’re headed in the right direction.
The parallels between Canada and last night’s North Melbourne Kangaroos game were striking. To your point, both teams are young and outplayed their opponents for most of the game.
However, at the crucial moments, they couldn’t string along the passes they needed and score when the opportunities arose.
They both needed veteran leadership to guide them through the tough times and take them over the top.
At least Canada has a couple of those veterans that can come in and do that.
That’s Murrika, putting our thumb on the scales since, I dunno, 1777?
As is tradition in big games
No Johnathan David and no Phonzie. Going on a limb here, we could be the 3rd CONCACAF team to get in. Mexico, US, and us up here.
However, we are prone to heartbreak.
I had a bumper sticker on the back of my 76 Cutlass that read “Disco Sucks! We want to see the band.” Alongside my Oat Willie “Onward Thru The Fog” Sticker.
True or False – Foo Fighters are the most polarizing modern rock band.
True! No, wait! False!
File not found
I wouldn’t really call them modern. Fuck, they’re at least 20 years old!
True, I heard Nirvana on a “Classic Rock” station a few years back. Some scars, they NEVAR heal.
Are there any rock bands that still exist?
Absolutley. They just don’t get airplay.
That new guy, Andrew I think? (Sorry, old!) Put a playlist on here with people I’ve never heard of, I listened to a few, definitely rock bands. The kids are alright!
It was Anthony in TX. And yes, there was good stuff in there!
Yes Anthony in TX. I’m turning into Emily Litella, swear to dog.
Insane Clown Posse is the most polarizing band, given their question regarding magnets-
