Let’s go to Hollywood, but why?

Marilyn.

I want to find Marilyn

What?

I need to meet Marilyn

Hey dude, I don’t know if you know it or not but Marilyn is dead,

has been dead for a long time.

I know, I know, just listen to me, you may not believe this but I know where she is.

No way bro, where?

Can’t be sure of anything anymore but if I was of better brain I would most certainly start in Hollywood.

The cool thing about going insane is you can do crazy shit, here I’ll prove it again.

There is fun to be had in the cave of despair.

Gods be thanked.

I have rediscovered my love of classic movies. 1930’s, 40’s black and white. Dark to light, change the camera angle and change the world.

What is film noir?

 Are you kidding?

The despair, the shadows creeping into the scene from nowhere, the use of irregular camera shots, behind lattices from outside looking into the mirror.

The evil intent in that beautiful woman’s eyes? Life changing.

So I don’t know if you know this but I live in Los Angeles, goddamn it.

Which means if I choose to I can go to Hollywood or Disneyland or Hell, all in one day I can.

 I get choice.

 I rule.

Today, I choose Hollywood. Come on, it will be fun.

Let’s get a few things sparkly clear shall we, I am a film director fan first.

Oh Christ here he goes:

You see, I like to call it the “Titanic” effect. Did you like Titanic? Too bad, I hated it. Hold on now let me clarify. When you’re watching a movie and the story gets in the way, that’s the “Titanic” effect. The movie was well made and quite beautiful. Leo and Kate Winslet were both superb but the rest of the movie was flimsy and awkward at best.

Good direction, bad story,

Sometimes the story gets right in the way.

Have you ever seen “East of Eden”? Elia Kazan’s directorial masterpiece?

Scary brilliant.

James Dean however?  So-So. He was no Marilyn but the camera did love him.

So today we go on a quest to get the big 8.

My favorite 4 directors and the 4 greatest actresses of all time, remember I choose.

That face is stunning, Hey wait, where’s Marilyn?

One of the two greats that crossed over from the silent (If you’ve never seen a silent film I want you to go away until you do, loser) era to the “Talkies” of course the other one is the greatest actress to have ever graced the silver screen, the legend herself. Joan Crawford.

I know, Marilyn who?

Of course no list would be complete without

Will the world ever see another like her?

And of course.

She needs no introduction and I wonder what she would have achieved if not taken so young.

Ladies and gentleman I give you Natalie Wood

Took a knee and shed a tear at this one, silly old softie that I am

Of course there are others, Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Lana (so underrated) Turner, Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine and nary a mention of Judy ( hardly watchable) Garland or Susan (ick) Hayward.

Better yet did you ever see “Gone with ( at the one hour and eighteen minute mark the greatest “Pan Shot” in the history of film making occurred) the Wind?” Man Vivien (I know, I know and she was GREAT in “Street car named desire”)  Leigh sucked ass, good movie but two hours of her whining sure as hell could have been cut out.

“Hey wait a minute, you said we were going to paying our respects to the one and only Marilyn.”

Stop it, not Manson but God Damn that video for “The Beautiful People” blew my damn mind.

It is hard to be clean

Hold on now we need to get to the important stuff first.

So I am just going to save everybody the trouble of harassing me and say the best director that ever lived is:

I apologize, it is the worst image that I captured in case you can’t read it, it’s the great Billy Wilder.

Now before we go any further I wish to register a complaint. It seems two of the greatest directors to ever live are not featured anywhere on these sacred grounds and damn it I demand to know why. If anyone reading (Man are you pathetic) this knows why or if we can make it better I would love to know how.

Neither Stanley Kubrick nor Federico Fellini have a star.

Just let that soak in for a moment.

HERE I’LL DO IT MY DAMN SELF

Obviously the artist is drunk do not try this at home.

If you have never seen a Fellini film I cast you out, you must now leave and you have been shamed.

So from this point on this is being done under protest. I simply can’t be expected to do a big four if one is not available.

In no particular order I give you:

Shut up you’re not doing this I am

I said in no particular order.

Yes it does say Howard Hawks and you are so right he should be at the very top of the list.

So as I wandered amongst all those stars I wondered why no Ingmar Bergman?

I had occasion to glance about from time to time and oh the wonders I did behold.

Hey stupid look down and when I did I saw,

Sadly some have faded over the years, this is the legendary Director John Huston.

I know, I know it was a different time.

Look I’m not judging shit, me? Pathetic little me judging something? I say “ha” to that.

D.W.Griffith made the worst movie to ever be put in front of us, a horrible atrocity for all human beings to try and endure.

That being said, the production values used in “Birth of a Nation” are still used to this day. Camera technique, light to shade? Changing focal points? All still fundamental tricks used in film making right now. Sorry.

Sometimes you just look down and you see the damndest things.

What movie changed your life the first time you saw it more than “The Exorcist?’

And who the hell is this guy?

“Yeah Right” made me sit through both “Kill Bill’s” recently. This guy can make a movie, remember don’t let the story convolute the film.

Sorry folks, most actors I find to be a dime a dozen. So here this is all you get.

The beginning of “Method Acting” some say the end of real “Face” acting

And picked as the “Best” (on some lists) actor of all time,

Look, me neither, just saying what some fools be saying.

So finally it’s Marilyn time, oh boy here we go.

Man I hope she doesn’t think I’m just another tourist .

As I scan my horizons I see that to no fault of mine, Marilyn is closed.

What?

Look at the fences covering the entrance.

I ain’t lying. Oh you’ve never been here? Sorry.

Looking across Hollywood Boulevard at the world famous, now known as, the “TCL Chinese Theatre. ” You can clearly see fences.

So I walk across the street and approach said fencing.

Marilyn is right up there, count 5 up than 2 left.

I have been to this theatre at least 6 times and it has never been surrounded by a fence.

Sign of the times? Got to keep the riff-raff out?

So I lean over the fence and shoot this.

Why yes that is Lana Turner right next to Bette Davis, as a wise man once said “Do sir please suck it”

God damn it we didn’t see Marilyn at all? What the fuck was your point in doing this crap?

That’s easy. I went to Hollywood Boulevard and you didn’t.

There must be some cool place to explore in your crummy little burg in your corner of hell.

No nothing?

Well here, enjoy this then.

John Lennon

As my journey was ending a strange fellow practically naked ran at me asking what time it was and why does Jesus hate him?

I turned and walked briskly back to my waiting vehicle and just one last time I looked down and damn my eyes for all time I saw a star and I wish I was kidding when I say it was…

Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band, thankfully a small dog was busy taking a crap right on it, maybe there is a God.

Mon esprit voit des enfants morts

If I offended any of the Judy Garland, Bob (YOUR NOT WELCOME HERE) Segar fans or the families of William Wyler, Stanley Kramer or Robert Bresson (all three excellent) I apologize but she was pretty unwatchable.

You want to watch a good movie? Try Mike Nichols’s “The Graduate”  the very definition of bad story (hell I’m not sure there was a story) but spectacular filmmaking, best film I’ve seen in awhile.

All four of the actress photos are from movieposters.com

All of the photos you see except one (feel free to guess) were taken by my stupid ass standing on Hollywood Boulevard like a dork. Stepping over people sleeping while urinating on themselves, sounds like fun and I am certain I will be joining them soon enough.

God bless Christmas and Hollywood.

Jesus, you promise Marylyn and you can’t deliver because you’re too out of shape to hop over a bicycle rack that you mistook for a fence. I am sorely disappointed.

With a nonagenarian living in the house (well, almost, he has 5 months to go) I have rediscovered old classic movies as well. Turns out I’m a huge Humphrey Bogart fan. Say, can you help a fellow American who’s down on his luck? John Huston rules.

Nice post.

(Vous voudrez peut-être voir un psychiatre au sujet de ces enfants morts.)

scotchnaut

The night post is up. There’s no mention of submarines whatsoever.

Brick Meathook

That’s what you think.

You poor, desperate thing…

So I guess Joliet Jake is distracted by other attentions tonight.

Also, this is an amazingly excellent post.

Its a private club but I can get you in there.

Senior living places probably have the softest foods to go with those drinks, too.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Mmmm, soft pretzels.

Brick Meathook

I really should have cropped that photo.

Dunstan

Walking distance from the Hollywood Bowl, right? I think I’ve walked by it once or twice.

Brick Meathook

Exactly. Very cool 1920s building, registered historic landmark.

Next DFO pub crawl I’ll take you all there. You can get hammered for under ten dollars.

Damn shame. First saw these guys back around 1975 and attended numerous shows over the decades; last time around 4 or 5 years ago. Think I’ll be watching more from this Gruene Hall show this evening (Gruene is only 20 miles from me and I have seen a LOT of badass shows there over the years).
Here’s one of my favorite early tunes from ZZ.

Worldwide Texas tour? Gumby saw that at Three Rivers Stadium. I didn’t see them until the mid eighties, the Eliminator tour, in the Tacoma Dome. Saw them twice after that, always a great show.

RIP, Dusty. Always loved your solo on this. Wish I could find a live version… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGW4qMUysAQ

I saw that tour, but not sure if it was the first time I saw them.
Weirdest place I saw them was at some arena in Milan Italy about 20 years ago. Went with a British friend; he was only familiar with the 80s stuff, but they played a lot of stuff from the 70s albums which blew his mind.

Final score in water polo is Canada winning 21-1. The losing S.A. goalie saw more balls up close than the bottom of a truck stop toilet.

Back from the weed store, my favorite place!

Viva La Tabula Raza

I might even be induced to venture out of my agoraphobic shell to visit one of those, if we had them down here. Fortunately, my guy pays house calls.

BeefReeferLives

Able to get some decent green nowadays? When I lived there, all you could get (with very rate exceptions) was the Mexicali Mudbud.

Gumbygirl

The first weed I ever bought was a $10 five finger bag of Mexican. We used to bitch when that was all we could get, but there was nothing wrong with it. Got the job done!

Viva La Tabula Raza

Yeah, good green out of CO and CA and even some locally grown stuff is available, but the move is to edibles, which is easier on the lungs.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Nice writeup. There are a couple of others I might add to the list, but not gonna bother at this point (I hate posting from my phone).
Surprised you didn’t do an endcap with a YouTube of Kinks “Celluloid Heroes.”

TheRevanchist

Is it wrong to root for Qatar tomorrow in the Gold Cup? I have mixed feelings. Just hoping for Mexico or Canada to win it all in the end.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Only if all the players are “guest” players from Pakistan or Sri Lanka or other such countries who have had their passports “collected for safekeeping” and have to live 30 people to a 200 sq ft bunkroom is it ok to root for them.
Fuck Qatar and the UAE and the rest of that part of the world. They’re worse racists than Americans, and that’s a high bar

TheRevanchist

Excellent point. That sounds like something I had heard before. Rooting for a 0-0 tie, and both teams to miss all the PKs in OT, and for both teams to feel shame and disgrace on their family name for generations to come.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

In other words, for them to be complete losers?

(interesting timing for the Weird Al reference, given that Mr. Popeil died today)

He was awesome. When I was a kid, late night stoner tv was weird old movies, the Three Stooges, and Ron Popeil gizmo commercials. I am old as fuck!

Akira Kurosawa should have a star. His films tie in the plot and the unique camera shots. For reference, The Seven Samurai.

Anthony In TX

Not only that, his influence on modern filmmaking cannot be overstated.

Gumbygirl

I loved this! I am a huge fan of silent movies, and early talkies, screwball comedies, noir, etc. My list of actresses is very much like Taj’s, with the addition of Barbara Stanwyck. She could do it all, but there was nobody who played a bad girl better than her.

Also for movie lovers, the long awaited Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is opening in September. Tickets are available starting August 5, website is academymuseum.org.

McHaggis

gg,
Agreed. Sometime ago I was watching Double Indemnity and wow, was impressed how it seemed to come naturally. Which is what a great actress/actor does, I reckon.

yeah right

Apart from the DFO Subway Pub Crawl I haven’t been to Hollywood Blvd in over 10 years and I’ve never seen a fence around the Chinese Theater before. It must be a COVID thing. The last couple of times I went it was clearly transitioning from a weird but quirky vibe to a really fucking weird and let’s get the fuck out of here vibe. Especially at the Theater.

Love the Fonda and the Pantages though.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

The DFO pub crawl and one trip to the Hollywood farmer’s market were the only times i saw the walk of Fame

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

As opposed to the walk of shame, which happens every time you approach a mirror.

Dunstan

Come on, none of us here have any capacity for shame any more.

BeefReeferLives

Hey all.
With the NuAids variant surging, & mask mandates for indoor areas going back up, I can imagine many of you are thinking “Well FUCK THAT. If those science denying fools don’t get vaxxed, FUCK ‘EM. I’m sure Darwin would applaud their deaths.” &, frankly, I would agree with you if it was that simple.

However it ain’t that simple. Case in point, I have a chum whose treasonous body has decided his kidneys don’t smell right, and are trying to reject them. So, he has to take drugs that suppress his immune system. He has gotten the jabs, but they didn’t quite take as much as they would have otherwise. So, he is vulnerable. As a result, he has to really watch where he is, what he does, and who he hangs out with. I have kept on wearing my mask in populous, indoor areas because he enjoys my company and I don’t want to kill him.

My chum is seeing an immunologist to see if there is any action he can take to get fully protected, but even if he does achieve full immunity, I think I’m going to continue wearing my face diaper when in a populous, indoor area. It’s a bit stuffy, but there’s a lot of people out there with immune issues.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

ballsofsteelandfury

I think we all agree that people with medical conditions are exempt from any ire against non- vaccinated people.

If anything, you buddy’s situation makes it even more important for the idiots that CHOOSE not to get vaccinated to either disappear or get the jab.

The longer they wait, the more in danger your buddy is.

BeefReeferLives

Sigh. Yeah, I know. However, I can’t hunt down people who haven’t had the jab & vax them, unfortunately. I don’t really have a platform to convince people to get the vax (& if I did, my screeching at them would probably not help matters)… Wearing my mask & being a good friend is really all I can do for him at this point. The feeling of powerlessness & frustration is not fun.

Gumbygirl

I want to hunt them down, give them the jab, and then throw rocks at them.

McHaggis

The next step is openly gloating at the deaths, but then we’re lowering our level of humanity to theirs. I don’t want to do it, I know I’d be not a worse person for not doing it, but when I hear of a prominent anti-vaxxer getting it and dying, that frisson of ITYS does make its appearance.

BeefReeferLives

However, your statement, “makes it even more important for the idiots that CHOOSE not to get vaccinated to either disappear or get the jab” is quite helpful. My course is now made clear. Let the cleansing begin.

Anthony In TX

Okay, but is the minor inconvenience of having to wear a mask when I go shoeless into the local Walmart to buy a case of Busch Light and a pack of cigs really worth your buddy’s whole life?

‘murrica sez naw.

Just kidding (was it that obvious?). Your friend’s experience just hammers home the level of selfishness among those who won’t get the jab just ’cause OAN said so or whatever.

Viva La Tabula Raza

In the name of political theater, the conservatives are culling their own herd, which is Alanis-level ironic. Unfortunately there is going to be a lot of collateral damage amongst other people who dont deserve it.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I have no beef with continuing to wear my mask indoors (typically double). But I’m doing it for *me* this time. The protection of people like your friend is a nice side benefit, but it’s not my main motivation anymore.

Barely related: the movie Palm Springs on Hulu is terrific.
A nice twist on the Groundhog Day formula.

Did you know that the woman who played Plenty O’Toole in Diamonds Are Forever was Natalie Wood’s sister. I guess my eyes never made it to her face to see the resemblance.

“Forget it Horatio, It’s Hollywood.”

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

It’s an oldie but a goody.

Wait did I say goody I meant woody.

I’ve been to LA 3 times to visit my dad. The first time I was there, we drove down Hollywood Boulevard. I said something along the lines of “this is it?” My dad said yes, and that was the last time I went to Hollywood Boulevard.

To me it’s like the Times Square of LA. Both places I actively avoid.

ballsofsteelandfury

For the most part, yes, but there are some hidden gems as we discovered in the last DFO Pub Crawl.

Sharkbait

I trust your judgement on that and will happily follow if/when I’m there for an LA crawl

yeah right

Yeah, Hollywood is more of a “Have a destination” place rather than a stroll around place. I miss the Hamburger Hamlet that used to sit across from Hollywood and Highland. I used to take all of my out of town visitors there. Their hash browns were amazing.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I like to imagine that it was replaced by a weed shop whose brown hash is amazing.
