We made it to the end! Where’s the final boss? I feel let down. We saw more clunkers than eye-catchers, that’s for sure. But we watched-except for those times when we didn’t. Look, we’re all of us individuals with many diverse interests. We have things to do.
Newsy Notes:
-Of course there’s a shit-ton of Covid-related news. (fucking WordPress doesn’t recognize Covid as a word-it’s only been three months short of two years)
-Dalvin Cook has got it and because he’s unvaccinated he’ll miss the game on the weekend. Nice going, letting your teammates down like that. Did your research address that, dipshit?
-Taysom Hill is in the same boat (a Ship of Fools, if you will) so it’s, “paging Ian Book, paging Ian Book”. He’s the Golden Domer that was drafted in the 4th round, and that’s about all I know about him.
-Hey, non-Covid news!-Aw crap. Turns out that Vincent Jackson, who was found dead in a hotel room last February, had 2nd stage CTE and had drank himself to death by the age of 38. Before the condition started dictating his behavior he had an active foundation that did good things for military vets that had health issues. Everything sucks.
To The Game!
Niners/Titans:
-This one is a tale of two teams on different kinds of runs-the Titans are on a skid of having lost 3 of 4 and the Niners have put it together using a carousel of running backs and have won 5 of 6.
-Whar Trey Lance? He’s behind the scenes and doing well according to Fred Warner. Jimmy G is also thriving-his qb rating of 107.4 the last two months is second only to Qaaron Rodgers. Good for him, putting some figurative oil in the ointment of San Fran’s plans.
-WTF! The Titans run D is on another level. They’ve given up all of 43 yards total in their last two games. That’s insane!
-The clock be ticking for A.J. Brown to be activated for this tilt but Rapaport is saying he’s a go.
Do a thing in the comment section.
THAT is what rain is supposed to look like.
I won’t post the video for the 53rd time, but Albert Hammond Jr. did tell me that it never rains in Southern California but it pours.
Pho sure!
Add an 8.1 to the mix.
Dammit! Missed by .8
I had planned to have just one hot toddy to warm up and then switch to just scotch neat, but I’m enjoying this.
Crown Royal, simple syrup, slice of lemon, Peychaud’s Bitters, and boiling water.
Very nice. A cup of wassail would nd lovely about now.
Yeah. The “hot drinks with booze” niche in the U.S. seems to be dominated by variants of Irish coffee. But there are lots of good options.
I wanted to make that this week’s drink, but couldn’t feasibly scale it down
Trader Joe’s has a great Wassail punch.
I assume any gamers are already aware, but the Steam winter sale is on. Mostly I’m just buying several games that have dropped to the <$10 range, but I decided to give Crusader Kings III a try, too.
Hickory Burger
The Apple Pan
West Los Angeles
That was worth all the awkwardness of not knowing what to do while I was standing by the wall.
Yeah, their seating “system” is a clusterfuck.
Good burgers, though.
Anyone else tuck into the holiday universal yums box? The Turkish delight are indeed a delight.
The baklava was supposed to be shared.
It wasn’t.
Those French goat chip cheese ruffles were bad ass as fuck.
With the pepper bite at the end.
Come on!
I still have plum cake, green tea and strawberry popcorn and prosecco flavored bon bons.
The prosecco bon bons are meh.
“In retrospect, that was clearly when DFO jumped the shark.”
You’ve had a busy night.
I’ve been on a liquid diet for almost two weeks to repair an inflamed pancreas. Sunday is my last day. On the one hand, I swear I’ve never felt better and I’ve been sticking to it. On the other hand, all I do is look at pictures of food. On Sunday I can ease back into solid foods and goddamit I’m going to have sushi because it’s perfectly allowable.
Well, enjoy, after two weeks you’ve earned it.
Left to right: yellow tail, tuna (maybe Toro), salmon, mackerel?, tuna and salmon. If you want soy sauce dip fish side down.
I assume hamachi rather than mackerel but who knows. And don’t forget the ebi.
Goddamn do I love me some hamachi nigiri.
First order right out the gate.
It’s been two years since I last went to Shunji. I am way, way overdue.
I think it’s just yellowtail, tuna, salmon, repeated.
Went to a friend’s place, cooked duck, drank wine, ate said duck, walked home in the rain and got soaked.
Changed into my kilt and am drinking a hot toddy, to be followed by scotch. Happy Festivus!
There better have been at least one single malt involved.
Cheers to you too my other LA brother.
Bought a beef tenderloin yesterday. I think I’ll make the duxelles tomorrow to save myself some labor on Saturday.
I’ve got puff pastry and I’m processing the recipe.
Never made it.
Willing to try for science!
And Sunday Gravy.
Lager Guy Larry requested it like 6 years ago.
Beef Wellington is the shit
Way to put it all out there!
Not yet, but I’m working on it.
(The backstory is — I own a kilt because I host a Robbie Burns Night, and that came up tonight, so when I came home and needed to change out of my soaked jeans into something comfy, that seemed a logical alternative.)
And yes, you’re invited to Burns Night.
I’ll come to Burns night if you don’t wear the kilt
No deal. I will, however, wear underwear.
As far as you know.
Please, time and date.
Can…can I come?
DFOers are welcome, though a bit of a commute for you!
I skipped last year, for obvious reasons, but I think it’s back on now. Be aware that it’s indoors in my not-very-big-apartment. In past years I’ve managed to seat as many as 20; it’ll probably be less this year, but it is close quarters and involves eating, drinking, and giving toasts and speeches and such, so not to everyone’s comfort level in current circumstances, though of course everyone will be vaxxed.
Burns’ birthday was January 25, which falls on a Tuesday this year. I host my event on a Saturday, so most likely the 22nd though possibly the 29th.
Yes, I serve haggis.
Also, the rule is, everyone who attends must recite a poem (Burns or anyone else), sing a song, give a speech, or otherwise contribute to the content.
Those of you who are admins should have my email address. Everyone else, eh, we’ll figure out how to get in touch. Just remind me over the next couple of weeks before I send the invites.
Or add us via zoom.
I literally have no idea where I’ll be on Burns night, but my bottle of Laphroaig 18 is ready.
I’ve been letting my scotch collection dwindle, drinking down the last few ounces of various bottles, with the plan to restock big time just before the big night.
Happy Festivus! Currently drinking neat rye after having the COTW.
I really need a kilt.
As do I. I wonder where one could buy one in LA?
So do I
Holy shit!!
https://www.offkilterkilts.com/product-category/clan-off-kilter/
There you go!
There are a couple of places, I think. I’m not positive, but I believe the place I bought from is https://www.offkilterkilts.com/
They don’t appear to have a physical store any more, though.
I just bought one of the inexpensive “sports kilts” to test it out and see if I wanted to splurge on a more pricey one. Honestly, this one does me just fine, and since I just wear it once a year, it’s probably fine for a while. But there are more elaborate options if you’re so inclined.
How’s the material? I was looking at the sports kilt myself. Is it warm?
I wouldn’t say it’s warm. I don’t really want it to be — I’m only wearing it when I’m in a crowded apartment wearing a tuxedo jacket and giving a long speech about a dead Scottish poet. So that’s a feature for me.
Scottish festival. One at the Orange county fair and one at Pomona. They do them annually apart from last year and probably this one.
Totally worth it stirring as fuck.

Tonight’s beers have been brought to you by the numbers 9.2, 10.8, and 5.6
If this is a puzzle you’re drinking a 7.3.
Oh, I see. Sesame Street has gone all Critical Race Theory.
Made it home in a diving rain, white knuckled the entire ride. I’ve driven easily over a million miles and I still don’t like driving next to Californians when it rains.
Happy holidays to all of you incredible people.
Survived two goddamn consecutive years in a pandemic and still stomping the terra!
And the drainage on the highways are shit, especially on the 5.
That looks a bit like a tri-tip. Perfect doneness.
Happy holidays my neighbor!
Not as close in distance as before but a true neighbor none the less.
Cheers.
That looks excellent
Game recognize game.
They kept that going for a while. 🙂
They should get at least a consolation point for the entertainment value. Call it 20-18.
Lesson of tonight – NOBODY wants to draw either of these sides Wild Card Weekend.
How many defenders on Deebo? ALL??
Need a Deeeeebo TD
Well, you got almost 30 yards, a reception, and no lost fumble?? Not too bad, all things considered.
HOLY CATS, fat fuck almost missed!!
Irrespective of how this game plays out, Don T has a strong playoff squadoo here. These fuckers dont quit.
Their whole (PHRASING) has always been greater than sum of the parts
So, how funny would it be that they’re playing for the FG aaaand they miss it?
Oh, I’m playing against Bullock in a FF consolation bracket?
Please SHANK’LOR, let him make this and release me from this living hell.
Key now is getting the ball FUCKING CENTERED.
Tanny Fanny. Tanny Fanny. Tanny. FANNY.
Evenin. Had dinner with Mrs Cola tonight, Deci is elsewhere. Won my JV bet, need Don T’s tits to cover. lets gooo..
I’m a big fan of covering TITs.
Two minute TANNY drill alert.
YES!
DEEBO!
One really has to suck at fantasy (hey, like ME!) to be out of the playoffs with Deebo rostered (hey, like ME!)
Moar like DEADBO.
Apropos of absolutely nothing, if any youse have holiday driving to do, you have an iPhone, and you’re in need of fresh podcast content, might I suggest “Bonanas For Bonanza” featuring Andy Daly, Matt Gourley, and Maria Bamford? Dumb fun for big dopes.
