Wumbo Wednesday with Weaselo: Dean Martin Not Included

Call me crazy, but there are better moon-related songs. Like the one that was in my head this weekend.

The opera is Rusalka, if you’re curious.

This past weekend, in addition to being 9/11, was the Mid-Autumn Festival (aka Tsukimi aka Chuseok aka Tét Trung Thu, depending on country of origin). Most people know it as “that holiday where they have mooncakes.”

I’m not here to talk about history and things like that. I’m way too white for that to be okay. I’m not even here to review mooncakes (the answer is yes, except I’m not big on the candied nut ones and a hard pass for durian). What I am here for is shameless picture plugging!

Owl’s Head Park, September 10th. Pic by me, color touch-ups by Senorita Weaselo.

It may be cropped at the bottom and reduced because otherwise the pano shot would never be able to fit here, and I’m too lazy to embed it, but it’s still a nice-ass picture. You’ve got the full moon partially obscured by the clouds on the right, the city lights on the bottom since at that part of the park you’re on a hill overlooking Manhattan to the north and the Upper Bay (and Staten Island) to the west, and to the left in the shot, the Tribute in Lights, uh, lights. (For those who don’t know, approximately the week before 9/11 two beams of light emanate at night from where the Towers stood.)

Yeah, so that’s my thing I got for this week. What’s for sportsin’?

NFL News
Remember Brownie the Elf? He’s back, in midfield form!

Week 1’s happened and so LAMAR! is done talking about his contract situation. Will he pull an Aaron Judge? Well, we’ll see.

Concussions were down over 50% among players who wore the Guardian helmets in the early goings of training camp. Promising signs considering no arrangements have been made for 2023+.

Out for TNF: KC K Harrison Butker (ankle), LAC WR Keenan Allen (hamstring), LAC TE Donald Parham Jr. (hamstring).

Out for Sunday: NYG CB Aaron Robinson (appendectomy). On IR: DEN S Justin Simmons (thigh).

Senor Weaselo
Senor Weaselo plays the violin. He tucks it right under his chin. When he isn't doing that, he enjoys watching his teams (Yankees, Jets, Knicks, and Rangers), trying to ingest enough capsaicin to make himself breathe fire (it hasn't happened yet), and scheming to acquire the Bryant Park zamboni.

I took a weird nap today. I hardly ever sleep during the day, but I crashed hard for like three hours and had insane fever dreams. I am still so tired, hopefully I’ll sleep all night. See ya later!

Oof. After foiling an attempt to steal home in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, the Dodgers get beat on a 3-run walk-off home run in the 10th.

That’s Wumbo for you!

This week in FedEx: The Shittening
I apparently owe FedEx over $100 for their mishandling of customs, and they can only inform me of this via snail mail, and I can only pay them with a paper check. They sent everything through USPS, I assume because it is far more reliable than their own services.

FedEx has also lost a package immediately after receiving it from the shipper. (Towels from NJ, I am apparently into soft home goods) I am getting to be a regular with FedEx customer service agents on Messenger, and they do a good job, by far the best part of the company. The agent took a look and said “yeah, you should just go ahead and tell the shipper to file a claim”

Go to a thrift store, buy and old analog fax, and deal with them over that. Follow me for more IT tips.

Dunstan could use some help with IT tips, as well.

ballsofsteelandfury

I have one in the office! I’ll ship it to you! What’s your FedEx number? 🤣😂

herodotus450

there are (or used to be) at laest one wobsite that would “fax’ documents for you. You just upload the file and they sent it along to a phone number of your choice.

Random thought just popped into my head. What are your top three Most 90s Movies?

I go with:

Swingers
Go
So I Married An Axe Murderer

Excellent pick

This movie redefined 90s cinema:

TheRevanchist

Wayne’s World
Elizabeth
The Full Monty

Honorable mention: 90’s porn movies

ballsofsteelandfury

If we’re going The Full Monty, then we have to go Four Weddings And A Funeral

TheRevanchist

I enjoyed that one, too. But I didn’t go see that in a theater 5 times like I did TFM.

BugEyedBoo

Con Air
Pulp Fiction
Demolition Man

TheRevanchist

Ooo! Demolition Man is some serious stuff. Even my teenage, cynical offspring likes that one.

ballsofsteelandfury

So many good 90s Movies! I just remembered that the original Clerks came out in 1994

Gumbygirl

Oooh, Clerks! That’s my number three.

Gumbygirl

I remember being amazed at the first Jurassic Park. I thought the first Austin Powers was silly fun. Third? Was Kill Bill 90’s?

ballsofsteelandfury

Kill Bill came out in 2003 but it definitely has a 90s feel because Tarantino became Tarantino in the 90s.

ballsofsteelandfury

Fuck Yeah Clueless!

Col. Duke LaCross

Not sure how I never got into “The Wire” before, but three episodes in and this show is fucking awesome.

litre_cola

Truly amazing. The 1st 2 seasons are unreal.

Your Japanese box is great.

I will not rephrase that.

Dunstan

My laptop is taking weirdly long to boot up, and after trying all the usual things I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just fucking old and getting ready to give up the ghost on me, so I’d better get a new one while it’s still functioning.

Anything important I should be taking into account? I don’t really do any heavy gaming (but just enough gaming that I think a Chromebook would be too light). There’s one I’m looking at with an Intel i7, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD.

Is it worth getting a Wifi 6 device? My router is a 6, but I live alone so it’s not like there’s a whole bunch of devices competing for bandwidth.

Luxury! Maybe I should dig out my old Commodore 64!

King Hippo

I bet the Kick-Man floppy disk still works!!

Dunstan

I think I got the floppy drive later — I started with the cassette deck, which needed a good 10 minutes to boot up Blue Max.

BugEyedBoo

I had an Atari 400 with the user-proof keyboard and the cassette to go with it.

BugEyedBoo

My boss’ boss had one of these, back in the dawn of time.

It looks like Intel integrated graphics may finally not suck. I have an HP with integrated graphics from a couple of years ago and its graphics are pretty terrible.

King Hippo

I can now cross offf “28 Days Later” from the very lengthy list of “I can’t believe you haven’t seen that” films.

It was good.

WCS

That movie is old enough to drink. If you haven’t seen it by now, chances are you don’t want to.

King Hippo

I am about two decades behind in all things, generally.

WCS

Well, you’re going to shit yourself when yinz get to the year 2036 and see who’s elected.

King Hippo

NO SPOILERS!!

Gumbygirl

Two? I hardly ever watch movies, a huge percentage of my pop culture knowledge is pre 1980’s.

Doktor Zymm

I have also not seen that, perhaps I will consider not continuing to not have seen it should the opportunity arise with no effort to me

Dunstan

It’s good, and I’m kind of indifferent on zombie films/TV. Not a must see by any means but you don’t have to be a fan of the genre to like it.

I’m not here to talk about history and things like that. I’m way too white for that to be okay.

If Pizza Hut is SHAME PIZZA, which brand would be SHAME CHICKEN?

Dee Reynolds is a SHAME BIRD, so, close enough.

Domino’s is also SHAME PIZZA, so there’s definitely room next to KFC.

But PopeYes is also religious

Look up Chicken Delight in Manitoba. So bad its good.

Seems like a greasy place you’d see Smokey working for coupons.

Popeye’s is quality chicken! No shame in that. We once bought KFC extra crispy and there were feathers sticking out everywhere. That, my dears, is SHAME CHICKEN.
We took the chicken back, explained that we wanted a refund because feathers, and the manager said, and I quote: “Feathers? Well, they’re birds.”

BugEyedBoo

A friend traveled abroad a lot, and always ate what the locals ate, as cheaply as she could. On her trip to Japan she decided she would splurge and eat American style. She ordered KFC, but when she opened the box she saw that the drumstick still had the foot attached. There went her appetite.
