The WAAAAAAAGHHHHHH is back, baby!

The football season is ending, only an Owl left to watch, which I will watch, but only if I can get a new supply of my favorite “tobacco” as my stash has gone up in smoke (maybe I should pray to St. Cheech and St. Chong for a miracle).  Next week will be the beginning of Hate Week, which you do not want to miss.  So I am back in the kontent mines to produce more kontent, so excuse the rust on my WordPress pickaxe, it takes awhile to switch from writing technical content to something a bit more conversational.

The first true new entry will be after the Owl, and will be all about the Death Korps of Kreig.  Sort of like WWI soldiers transported to the War40k universe.  Humorless, fanatical, and everlastingly loyal soldiers who will trade a 1000 lives to take down a single enemy.  Oh, and no one knows what they look like.

From there I would like to cover other Imperial Regiments such as the Vostroyan First Born, the Tanith First and Only, and the Cadians.  I also want to cover some of the Chaos legions and their specialities.  But I am also open to suggestions; hopefully, some of you became interested in this insane universe and would like more explanation about certain groups, weapons, or factions.  Also, there have been some great War40k video games to come out lately, like Boltgun which is the 40k version of Doom, the RPG Rouge Trader, strategy games such as Tacticus or Dawn of War, or Chaos Gate.  Henry Cavill is working with Amazon and Games Workshop to produce a War40k series plus there are more and more fan short films out there.  Since Hasbro has shit the bed with DnD, a lot of people are checking out alternatives and all are welcome.

So lots of weird shit incoming with lots of information about said weird shit and hopefully we can all enjoy the weirdness.

To whet your whistle so to speak, here are the Death Korps of Kreig starring in a Sabaton video:

I’m watching the replay of the DET-SF game, since I slept through it while it was live.

Third quarter and the Lions can’t possibly lose this.

(RON HOWARD VOICE: The Lions lose this)

Doktor Zymm

Just applied for my New Zealand eVisa, woo!

Sharkbait

Awesome. I need to go there.

Doktor Zymm

I’ll report back, it might just be sheep

Mr. Ayo

Good luck. I just got approved for my Vietnam eAmex, woo!

Doktor Zymm

I need to get back to Vietnam sometime soon

Brick Meathook

I visited Vietnam in 2002, and I cashed in a US$100 traveller’s check at the concierge, and they gave me like one million “dong” in the local currency. One time I booked a taxi at the hotel, and the driver wanted 10,000 dong to go across town (downtown Ho Chi Minh City), but the hotel staff argued him down, telling me that I was being taken advantage of. Later I looked up “10,000 dong” and it was 0.65 cents.

Doktor Zymm

Got a bunch of really nice tailored silk clothing made when I was there in 2007, lady from the hotel drove me to the post office on the back of her motorbike so I could ship everything home. They even got a box and packed it for me!

Senor Weaselo

Well, if I die tonight, know that it was for laughing because Senorita Weaselo was lamenting she didn’t have enough pork in her kimchi yaki udon.

“I like the meat, my body likes the meat—“

And then I burst out laughing reflexively.

Sharkbait

I mean she can’t just hang a curveball over the plate like that.

WCS

Koderius Tony would still drop it.

Senor Weaselo

HEY! HEY! HEY HEY HEY!

Doktor Zymm

So I moved in to my current apartment about 5 1/2 years ago. The old resident STILL gets important looking mail and the occasional package sent here. Today it was a case of Enfamil. I generally give the packages to the leasing office since I think they have a forwarding address, although I did once decline delivery of a mattress.

Got a strange stack of three other people’s W-2s the other day.

Fun fact: Fargo is what Josh Allen tells his receivers to do right before he throws his third interception of the game.

Dan Campbell once saw a black guy win on “Punch a Bunch” by turning down a 5k win for a highly unlikely 10k win and that has informed every life decision ever since

Ray Rice was good at that game.

It was a bit awkward when Janay kept apologizing, though.

Also, United has added two flights from KC to Vegas for the Owl, and the flight numbers are 1989 and 2287. Thanks to Alex’s Swiftie series I get why that’s significant!

SonOfSpam

Yeah, that’s sort of adorable.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Until one of them crashes…

King Hippo

which is why she has TWO, duh!!!

Horatio Cornblower

Does she have any songs called “Why Is There A Hole In The Side Of My Airplane”?

Because I’d avoid any flights associated with whatever code she slapped on that one.

Doktor Zymm

She owns two private jets. She’s not gonna write any song that’s relevant to our flying experiences

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

She’s not gonna write any song that’s relevant to our flying experiences

Wait are we talking about Taylor Swift or Aaliyah?

Buddy Cole's Halftime Show

Sadly Mohammed Atta can’t pilot them

Doktor Zymm

And the Alaska promo to make up for the MAX grounding is now out, I got a single use 40% off code and they’re giving double EQMs during February

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

We’re watching this dating show and they’re portraying this guy as a “surfer” and the three seconds of footage they have of him in the water is of him eating shit on the same type of board that I literally found in the trash two months ago.

Doktor Zymm

So you’re saying they aren’t portraying him as a GOOD or even ADEQUATE surfer?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

He’s very funny. He lives with his parents and works for his mom (who plans weddings) and claims that he “only dates beautiful women”. Which of course explains why he’s on a matchmaking show, gotta set up some kind of filter because he’s apparently living in an Axe Body Spray commercial.

ballsofsteelandfury

Honestly, he’s not wrong. Who has ever dated someone they didn’t think was beautiful?

Doktor Zymm

There are still people on Twitter?

WCS

do Russkie trolls count as people?

Horatio Cornblower

It’s still good for certain sports communities. You just have to block 18,000 people a day and then it’s bearable.

SonOfSpam

Some right-wing chode (but I repeat myself) said they have their own Taylor Swift and posted a pic of Boebert, which, Jesus, where do you even start?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I think that comparing someone like Taylor Swift (or any woman with a modicum of self-respect, really) to Lauren Boebert qualifies as the greatest insult in recorded human history.

Doktor Zymm

What makes you think Boebert doesn’t have self-respect? She seems pretty confident to me

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I meant that being compared to Boebert would be terribly insulting to any woman.

Doktor Zymm

In case anyone wants to keep discussing, I posted this in the other thread before noticing this was up:

Humans suck at probability, we can only really understand never and always, and mayyyyybe 50/50 on a good day (or nawt, looking at you ‘tails never fails’). If you are acting the same way 100% of the time when the probabilities are not 100% or near it then you are being an idiot, although a very understandable and human idiot.

Good poker players don’t play the same hand the same way every time, and good coaches shouldn’t react the same way to similar yardage/score/time situations every time. Campbell has historically been pretty good at playing aggressively with input from the analytics and team context, so I trust that he considered all the factors people have mentioned when making his decisions and it’s worked well enough to get the Lions here in the first place. He has far more information and context than we do, or even than any journalists or industry people do, so I’m gonna trust him here.

WCS

I agree with you on everything but the last point. A good coach learns, adapts, and changes in the right situation. He has to learn to do that, even if it goes against every last fiber of his insane brain.

ballsofsteelandfury

Yes. Percentages are based on all kinds of competition. Just because you were successful on 4th and 3 against the Jets doesn’t mean it will work against the #1 team in the conference at their place.

You need to adapt and accept that situations are different and the “we’ve done it all year” mentality doesn’t work in the playoffs. You are playing a much better quality of opponent than what the stats represent.

Horatio Cornblower

THERE ARE 5 MINUTES LEFT IN THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP YOU ARE DOWN BY 3 YOU ARE IN FG RANGE AND YOU EMPLOY A KICKER FOR PRESUMABLY JUST SUCH A SITUATION!!!!

Doktor Zymm

*Tyler Bass slinks away quietly*

Doktor Zymm

We don’t have enough visibility into his process to know if he was adapting or not. I personally think what evidence we do have indicates he probably was, but it’s reasonable for others to draw a different conclusion there.

What I do know for certain is that I don’t have the information and in-depth knowledge of the team and situations to make a better decision than he did, and neither do any of the people I’ve seen writing articles or tweeting or whatever. If we would have acted differently, there is absolutely no legitimate reason to think our choice is the better one, hindsight isn’t a valid argument.

WCS

Again, fair points. What we also don’t know, until he says so otherwise, is did he consider anything else? If not, then he’s predictable. Always going for it is the same as never going for it.

I want Campbell to succeed. He just needs to continue to grow. Being Captain Charisma is great, but so is making the right decision. Learning from past mistakes is essential.

Doktor Zymm

Oh absolutely, and while I would love to hear him talk more about his thought processes I suspect he won’t be sharing that particular special sauce any time soon. He’s pretty press savvy and I think he’s been responding in a way that doesn’t really give much insight into what’s going on so not much help there. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

And to be fair, he doesn’t go for it all the time, he’s just done it at a rate that’s far closer to the likely probabilities than any other coach ever has. Good analytics doesn’t just use raw data, it’ll also incorporate things like opponent quality and how confident they are in their game planning (which after the first half was probably very confident).

Hopefully he’ll have an amazing career and we’ll get to watch a really good documentary about all this in a couple decades.

Horatio Cornblower

Paraphrasing what I said in the last post, but based on recent events there seems to be little reason to have thought they would convert on the one in the 4th quarter. The Lions offense was not doing well: Goff was either throwing wobblers, or behind the receivers, of when he did deliver a spiral the receivers were acting like it was a live grenade and wanting nothing to do with it. Campbell does, of course, have more information than I do but based on what I was seeing the smarter thing to do was to tie the game up, give your offense a boost and some confidence, and not give SF the emotional boost of first a stop and then a chance to increase their lead.

Also calling a running play there was just fucking dumb.

Last edited 3 months ago by ballsofsteelandfury
Horatio Cornblower

All that said I like Campbell and would rather have him coach the Cowboys than certain Blue Bunny Ice Cream aficionados that I could name.

Doktor Zymm

I’ve never actually had Blue Bunny Ice Cream. I should try it one of these days

BugEyedBoo

It’s ice cream. Ain’t no Graeter’s.

ballsofsteelandfury

WE HAVEN’T EVEN TALKED ABOUT THE RUN PLAY AT THE END OF THE GAME OR THE FACT HE RAN SO MUCH CLOCK WHEN HE KNEW HE NEEDED TWO POSSESSIONS!

Horatio Cornblower

Wasn’t that the play on the second 4th down decision, or am I misremembering my 4th quarter questionable decisions?

ballsofsteelandfury

Misremembering. This was with roughly two minutes left and they were inside the five. They ran and had to burn a timeout when they didn’t get it.

That made it so the game was over when SF recovered the onside.

If they had thrown incomplete, minimal time would have come off the clock.

For that matter, they should have kicked the FG as soon as they got into range and saved even more time on top of the timeouts.

Losing by 3 is the same as losing by 7.

Last edited 3 months ago by ballsofsteelandfury
Horatio Cornblower

I remember commenting that they should have kicked the FG immediately, and ideally made it.

I don’t have a great recall of the end of the game, which is troubling as I was stone-cold sober last night.

Horatio Cornblower

I’m an OK poker player and I play 9-4 off suit the same way every time: tossing them in the middle with a disgusted sigh.

Doktor Zymm

Even in the unraised big blind? That’s some commitment!

SonOfSpam

I turn over the 4 so the table can see and raise 6x the big blind.

IS HE CRAZY? No one knows, but they all call, then I can be done and just drink all night like Shiva intended.

Horatio Cornblower

I probably should. Seems like every time I hit one of those on an unraised big blind someone inevitable rivers a flush or some nonsense.

I recall going home on the second or third hand of a tournament once because my 2-3 in the big blind turned into a full house on the turn, only to find out that one of the other guys had slow-played pocket 9s into a better full house.

His explanation for not raising was that it was so early in the tournament that he felt he should see if the 9s went anywhere before chasing everyone out for maybe minimal blinds. Credit to him, it sure worked out that time.

King Hippo

I am so excited to learn MOAR about this bonkers stuff. It’s such an interesting wormhole!

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

It’s probably be tough to get a jury to award much more money for things he said *during* the trial. I think they’d say “the object of the $83 million award was to get him to shut his mouth, and once it came down, it worked.” But if he talks shit now or at any point moving forward, I think they’d happily bring the hammer down again, for whatever it takes.

Doktor Zymm

This could be an interesting experiment, although I’m not sure he has enough lifespan left for us to reach the iteration where he finally learns to shut his stupid mouth to stop getting sued

Senor Weaselo

I say that’s a worthwhile experiment.

Horatio Cornblower

When a party dies in the middle of a suit the suit is considered void, (at least in CT), until an estate is substituted.

I mention this only because I am curious, and dare I say hopeful, that this soon becomes a relevant question in certain New York litigations.
