Your Free Agency Update Open Thread

Look at that totally expected/labored Bowie reference! A shoutout to Horatio, his feelings about Don T’s writing aside, he knocked it out of the park with his mock draft topic this morning. Well done.

This evening we’ll focus on free agent signings but only those that, like George Preston Marshall trading for Bobby Mitchell in 1962, dramatically change the complexion of a team. We won’t bother with any re-signings but feel free to do so in the comments. Also, I won’t be getting into the exact nature of the contracts because that will take forever.

Off We Go!

Tyler Linderbaum: 3 yrs, 80 mil. In this very space I predicted that he could basically write his own contract but I was thinking maybe 20 mil a year-this sets the bar mighty high. But he’s a young stud that instantly upgrades the Raiders O-line.

Tua Tagovailoa: Contract details not available yet. I doubt he’ll reach the heights of his first year under Mike McDaniel but he’s capable enough and gives the Falcons some insurance if Penix doesn’t recover from his injury in time or just struggles again. He should start doing insurance ads because that would be on-brand. Look for Kirk Cousins to be sent on his way soon.

Mafe/Cook: 3yrs 60 mil and 3 yrs 40 mil respectively. That squeaking sound you heard was Mike Brown opening his wallet. After the bats flew away Brown was heard to say, “Oh God, what have I done?”. Well, someone somewhere in the organization convinced him that the Cincy D wasn’t going to get any better without an infusion of cash. Mafe is an edge that was only a rotational piece in Seattle but that was because that unit is so talented. Cook ups the talent in the secondary-another good move. Now, watch them screw up the draft.

Odafe Oweh: 4 yrs, 100 mil. That seems a bit much and seems to reflect the Commies desperation to shore up their defense. The unit needs an overhaul and I guess this is a start.

Malik Willis: 3 yrs, 67 mil. The man is betting on himself by signing a front-loaded contract for the first two years from the too-obvious buyer that was the Fins and going from there. If he exceeds expectations he’ll likely get a new one in the third year, if he doesn’t he can settle into the life of a backup QB-and that’s the worst scenario. At some point I’ll do an overview of new offensive coordinators and we’ll re-visit this signing.

Mike Evans: 3 yrs, 60 mil. Everyone except Evans’ mother knows that this is a two year deal. Anyone recall when the Niners receiving core was the envy of the league? Me neither, that was some time ago. This stopgap fella has one more good year in him and that’s about it.

Devin Bush: 3 yrs, 30 mil. The Bears D was more opportunistic than good. I read somewhere that a defense’s ability to generate large numbers of turnovers year after year is pretty much impossible. Bush gives them stability at a key position.

Travis Etienne: 4 yrs, 52 mil. The Saints Kamara is long in the tooth. (of all qualifying rb’s his Yards After Contact number was 2nd-to-last) The Saints pick up a back that can replicate what Alvin can do and is much younger.

Isaiah Likely: 3 yrs, 40 mil. Unlike Daboll, Harbaugh understands the importance of a tight end. That position hasn’t thrived in a long time in New York-seems like a good fit.

Kenneth Walker: 3 yrs, 45 mil. I thought he’d get a bigger coin purse than this but it’s probably enough. KC turns around immediately after losing Etienne which is smart thinking and I hate it.

Well, that’s what I have. If you’d like to elaborate on my screechings or comment about your own team’s signings I’d love to hear it. Or maybe there’s an under-the-radar move that you’ve identified. Have at it.

Arizona is in tank mode, I guess. Hard to tell the difference.

Too bad we can’t tank the public handouts to the billionaire owner.

Unsurprised

My shithole state legislature decided to hand hundreds of millions to subsidize an NBA franchise. I genuinely want to recall all these assholes.

litre_cola

Watching Cuba v Puerto Rico is so silky and smooth that it may cause pregnancy.

Unsurprised

God fucking shit. I missed that great morning thread.

Horatio Cornblower

I saw this on Twitter, but it was something to the effect of “Tua is really gonna be bummed about his release when they have to tell him again tomorrow”

BeefReeferLives

Another beaut from Dave at The Draw Play

(alternate title: It’s Not Whether You Win Or Lose, It’s How You Lay the Blame)

BeefReeferLives

& as usual, Dave’s musings under the comic are pretty spot on.

Doktor Zymm

Pretty much every mountaineering boot out there contains PFAS, we done screwed up the wilderness good

Horatio Cornblower

This massively pro-Mexican crowd in Houston has got to be making Stephen Miller physically ill.

To which I say, Viva la Revolucion!!!

Unsurprised

The Gulf Coast Vietnamese probably recognize most of the latin cognates in the Mexican chants from their former French overseers.

Horatio Cornblower

I’m about 3/4 of the way through the first version of my semi-annual mock draft and Scotchy’s post here is a good reminder why it’s idiotic to do one of those before free agency.

But I’ll be goddamned if I’m going to start over. You get what you pay for.

Mr. Ayo

Only Mexico is getting more beat than the DFO servers

Mr. Ayo

And Mexico homers. Thank god I’m not a bettor. Wait, better? Well, I don’t wager money on the outcomes of games, whichever one that is.

Horatio Cornblower

I would have thought most former Giants would avoid Daboll as though he were a leper who also had Covid.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Anyone else watching paralympic coverage? Sitting downhill skiing is mesmerizing and nerve-wracking.

ballsofsteelandfury

How’s Lyndsey Vonn doing?

rockingdog

Found a funny: I have created a diorama of the Partridge family attacking the Brady Bunch family. My life is very boring.

Munsters v Adam’s Family was better.

Gumbygirl

Looks like the Partridges are kicking Brady ass. Except for Jan Brady. She’s a stone- cold killer.

rockingdog

Alright gonna watch USA vs Mexico ⚾️

Instead of reading my library book 📕

Hope this game is ROCKING!

Don T

TEN signed Mitch Trubisky. Saving whelm: no more fretting about Will Levis.

ballsofsteelandfury

Makes sense he signs with the TITS…

ballsofsteelandfury

Speaking of former Steelers QBs, Kenny Pickett is going to The Panthers…

litre_cola

Red Rocket no more?

ballsofsteelandfury

Michael Pittman to the Steelers via trade from Colts.

I like that they now have two tall receivers.

ballsofsteelandfury

Yeah, they kept the guy I would have traded…

BeefReeferLives

& they got him for just a “late round pick swap”.

Sounds like the Colts just wanted to unload him & Stillers were able to benefit.

Another Khan job, perhaps.

Gatoraids

Unsurprised

That’s a steal in South Florida.

ballsofsteelandfury

Kenny Gainwell is getting paid by Tampa Bay. Good for him!

Gumbygirl

I was hoping the Steelers would find a way to keep him.

ballsofsteelandfury

They got Rico Doodle instead.

I’m happy for Kenny.

Gumbygirl

Huh, I missed that. Rico is suave!

WCS

Indeed. Sucks that he won’t be bumming around the Southside any longer.

BeefReeferLives

She is hilarious and has many a good point,

but her whiplash editing makes me feel old, stupid and slow.

King Hippo

If Mike Evans has one good GAME left in him, Hippo will be surprised.

litre_cola

Don’t you worry, that power station will take care of him. Or he will get shot.

Doktor Zymm

He will get shot by the power station

SonOfSpam

Some might get shot
And some bleed when the aim is on

blaxabbath

Not sure Gardner Minshew is aware that Arizona is turning all the decent mobile home parks into townhouses/ distribution centers.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Keep in mind the cap went up significantly, so everyone has money to burn and people will get overpaid. Better these guys than another fucking techbro looking to build a bunker for when they successfully bring about the apocalypse.

SonOfSpam

Lasorda’s the manager.

Also the team nutritionist is Chef Boyardi.

litre_cola

Also latchkey kid, I was all about his ravioli, cold and out of the can.

Horatio Cornblower

“Brother!”

-Jim Tomsula, dropping his bindle and opening his arms for a hug

WCS

Former Dirt Stiller Francisco Cervelli is Italy’s manager.

Despite being from Venezuela.

Horatio Cornblower

Former Yankee Francisco Cervelli!

Don T

Jorge Posada and several ex Y*nk*s are on the coaching staff.

WCS

Devin Bush: 3 yrs, 30 mil. The Bears D was more opportunistic than good. I read somewhere that a defense’s ability to generate large numbers of turnovers year after year is pretty much impossible. Bush gives them stability at a key position.

BeefReeferLives

Eh, Bush was a bust for th Stillers (especially for a 1st round pick, 10th overall – sheesh).

However, he seemed to get his shit together last year for the Brownies. I’m hoping he continues his good play for Da Bears. We will see…

ballsofsteelandfury

He got his shit together because he needed to prove himself to get paid.

He got paid at Pittsburgh and coasted. He got paid now and he will coast again.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Fair but on that team, if he coasts his teammates might Full Metal Jacket him (beat him with pillowcases full of soap, not make him bust out the shotgun in the bathroom or send him to ‘Nam)

Horatio Cornblower

I was going to say, I’d be very wary for a guy who sucked for three years and then got his shit together in his walk year.

Please refer to Pickens, George, all of next season.

Doktor Zymm

In general I feel like anyone who plays well on the Browns should be able to play well anywhere, but I’m not sure that applies to last year’s defense since it was actually cromulent and had Myles Garrett. And of course they screwed it up by snubbing their DC for the HC job, so the waiver only applies to last year

Doktor Zymm

4/$120m for Jaelen Phillips going to the Panthers, should be good for the Kitties and the whole NFC South is looking like it might be a bit more interesting this year. Except for the Buccs I guess who will be mostly the same?

SonOfSpam

Also, even though Etienne is better than Kamara now, couldn’t the Aints have drafted some young guy in the 3rd round or something? Seems like a lot to pay for a usedish back.

SonOfSpam

RAMMMMMMIT signed another KC corner, Jaylen Watson…3 years $54 mil. It’s good. Maybe another depth corner in the late rounds, otherwise the draft can be about WR/TE and OL.

One of the mocks I saw had Oregon TE Sadiq going to RAMMMMMIT at #13, and he runs a 4.39 so yes please. Either that or a 5+ year tackle. Or I guess USC receiver Lemon, always nice to have a Lemon party.

Horatio Cornblower

Spoiler alert, I have Lemon and Sadiq off the board before 13. I have Rammit taking the Tyson kid out of ASU.

So you can safely rule that out

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Love this signing as I am a huge fan of bush.

SonOfSpam

Hope he doesn’t have to play in Brazil.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

The first one, right?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I went lowercase for many reasons
