TGIF! Happy splashdown day!
Word Count Filler Time
Speaking of words, let’s study origin of words, or as some say the etymology of words.
Marmalade
Mary Queen of Scots sometimes refused to eat. However, she was always down for a conserve of oranges. So it was called Maria malade.
Ostracize
This has nothing to do with Ostriches or down under. In ancient Greece Athenians voted against a statesman by etching their name on ostrakon.
Dumbbell
Not named after you! Back in the day, a bell ringer was notable for their well developed muscles in their chest, shoulders, and arms. An inventor found a device that could develop the same muscles without the sound of a bell toning over the entire city.
Dismal
This comes from the Latin phrase dies mali which means unlucky days. These were medieval days that were unwise to start a new undertaking and were two days per month. April was the 10th and 20th. So don’t start anything new today.
Capital
This is the money sense of the word. Again, this is from Latin where the word caput meant head of a cattle. Back in those days it turns out the head of cattle was worth a lot of whatever currency they used then.
Gibberish
No, not this post. Have some faux respect. There was an 11th century alchemist charged with death for dealing with the devil. His name was Geber and his nonsensical treaties to defend himself led to this term.
Alright, enough of this nonsense. Use your own words below.
