I was a bit excited, since destroyer and submarine tenders were at the time about the only US Navy ships that had co-ed crews, and I had not seen an American woman (corn eaters in the vernacular of the time) in six or eight months.
When I got on board, every woman sailor I saw were either pregnant or showing herpes cold sores.
I found the steel stock I needed, got the pump up and running (and got a Navy Achievement Medal out of it), but I was very anxious to get back to Thailand and the Philippines, home of the rice-eating babes.
I got out of the Navy just as the AIDS/HIV thing got going. So, my biggest worry during my deployment was contracting a cold sore. Like Trump, I guess Herpes was my Vietnam.

There’s a thing in the German Yums box called Shokomonk that’s a strawberry, rhubarb crumble covered with white chocolate. It’s really, really sweet but when combined with a pinot noir is crazy good.
