Ladies and GENTLEMEN, I am former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and it’s my great honor as your GUEST DEEJAY to welcome you to the Door Flies Open Request Line. Tonight’s show is DEEP CUTS WITH RAY LEWIS. One of the many things God blessed me with here on this earth is a love of MUSIC. In particular, I have an abiding love for unappreciated album tracks and B-sides. It takes heart – I tell you this – it takes heart like you wouldn’t believe for a song to be able to sit tight in the background, and STAY OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT. Being able to FLY UNDER THE RADAR is a great quality in a song and something that me and my friends REALLY APPRECIATE. This week we’ll be playing songs that are so understated that MOST PEOPLE DON’T EVEN KNOW THEY WERE PRESENT IN THE FIRST PLACE and THEY’RE HAPPY TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
To get you folks started on this week’s edition of Request Line, I’m going to share a favorite track of mine from the 1984 Violent Femmes album Hallowed Ground. Most people are familiar with the Femmes for their EPONYMOUS DEBUT ALBUM and have probably heard one of the other MINOR HITS THAT GOD SAW FIT TO BESTOW UPON THEM, like their cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution” or “American Music” off of Why Do Birds Sing. Now, a lot of people feel that the Femmes’ other albums are trash. That they should be DISCARDED IN A GARBAGE DUMPSTER BEHIND A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. But those people are blind. I tell you that – BLIND. They are missing out on some HIDDEN GEMS. Now let me tell you that I really dig Hallowed Ground because a lot of the songs are about FAITH. In particular, this next track is about how it’s important to be able to HAVE FAITH that someone is NEVER GOING TO TELL anyone what happened or what they saw, WHICH WAS NOTHING, and certainly NOTHING THAT CONCERNED THEM.
Thank you for tuning in tonight, folks, and GOD BLESS. Make your own submissions in the comments and I’LL BE HAPPY TO GIVE THEM A SPIN FOR YOU!
MuteMath has the best drummer I’ve ever seen live. Guy can be the show himself. Most people have heard “Typical,” which is a great song, and has one of the best music videos, but “Electrify” is lesser known and great too.

Thanks to yeah right’s Ministry post, I jumped down the mid-nineties thrasher rabbit hole. Feel free to delete this and S.O.D. from your set list, I realize it’s not for everyone.
L7 – The Bomb
I’ll get to more after this farewell lunch for a coworker, but here’s my first contribution:
Still one of my favorite ACDC songs that does not get enough love.
Thanks, Internet.

Joy Division covers Velvet Underground? Here’s a live version of Sister Ray. At the end you can hear the only joke that Ian Curtis ever said in his life which is, “you should hear our version of ‘Louie, Louie'”. Apparently every band in their small universe was doing it after the success of Animal House.
Gah! I hate being stupid.

After the double post of the Springsteen douche song, I need to cleanse my ear palette.

Stop the Springsteen; it’s the wrong generation for Cuntler.

Sorry; suitcase empty; just looks cool.

Man, that looks like a lot of work to be so cool. Tight pants and a knit hat in this weather? No thank you, sir.
These dudes probably think a Monkey Wrench is just some song by the Foo Fighters.
Nobody has ever had as much soul as Otis:
This one is just for Cuntler

I does not read komments good
No worries; didn’t mean to steal your thunder but wanted to make sure it got included – I’ll delete my version.
You’re good. Now I get to listen to it twice!
I thought you didn’t like it; why are you listening to it?
How about an Elton John song making fun of conservatives from the early 1970’s that could possibly be a huge hit on the country airwaves today because they wouldn’t understand it is a joke.
Yes, please.
Buried on the album Last Sucker here is Ministry covering The Doors “Roadhouse Blues”. When I’m doing my morning exercise and this comes on my Ipod I always say “Oh shit!” because the pace will pick up. Oh yes it will. Some of the most ferocious drum work you will ever hear.
This song is best known as a Sheryl Crow hit, but Cat Stevens did it first and best. Plus it’s got “cut.”

Why don’t my embeds work?
The autoembed stuff doesn’t work anymore (not sure why). You can get them to embed if you click on the “share” tab in youtube (not sure how it would work on mobile) and then go to the “embed” tab (you’re looking for a block of text that starts with an iframe tag – iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ etc.). It’s kind of a moot point anyhow, though, because people have to listen in a new tab (otherwise the auto-refresh cuts it off after a bit – or at least it does for me).
Take heart, though, because anything you post WILL make it into the aggregated DFO Radio post for Monday, I promise.
This?
Bingo.
“That’s fuckin’ entrapment, man!”
– Mark Sanchez
Not *tremendously* obscure, but certainly not one his signature hits.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5hPeJwynEI
Off of the rarely heard Three Snakes One Charm album.
Black Crowes “Under a Mountain”.
It’s so obscure that the person who posted this on Youtube used the album cover from an entirely different album. That’s the cover from By Your Side not Three Snakes One Charm.
What da fook. I’m not good at this computin’. Elbow’s One Day Like This.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NFV8dHrZYM
Someone posted this in the spreadsheet we’re using to organize these things, along with a disparaging sentiment towards Cuntler. Most people (including yours truly) go through their lives believing that the well-known Manfred Mann version was the original.
[edit removed video]
Seriously. Someone get that guy some ex-lax. He is going to bust an O-ring.
Also, this:

This is my favorite Hendrix song, though he did it with Band of Gypsys rather than the Experience:
Apologies for the length.
/dick joke
This should qualify as a deep cut. Black Sabbath of of Volume 4 produced this lovely little acoustic song. Laguna Sunrise.
Last one.
Dirty Mac – Yer Blues
Rubberneck Lions – Oysterhead
[Oysterhead is Les Claypool (Primus), Trey Anastasio (Phish), and Stewart Copeland (drummer for the Police)]
Jane’s Addiction “Been Caught Stealing (Remix)” – I like it better than the original.
Blind Melon’s Vernie. One of my favorite bands. Outside of No Rain, probably every song they wrote would be a deep cut and imo that is a shame.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq_Mtqm7rTA
Ad Rock & Beck – “Black Tambourine”
Led Zeppelin’s music is so well-known that it’s hard for anything to classify as a “deep cut”, but this is one that you won’t hear on the radio unless you have a very cool – and very independent – classic rock station nearby.
That’s the same way I feel about Out on the Tiles:
Which inspired this Rival Sons’ non-deep cut:
When looking to see if this qualifies as a deep cut, I was very surprised to see it apparently hit #1 on the modern rock chart. Anyway, not sure if this technically qualifies, but one of Talking Heads’ lesser known songs (they had a couple pretty good tunes):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FJ8x6wnZy8
Great choice. I first hear this song via the “Until the End of the World” soundtrack – which is just a magnificent collection of music (and pretty much chock full of things that would fit nicely into this theme).
THAT’S GREAT HUSTLE!
/slaps ssi_bulldawg on the ass hard enough to leave a handprint.

Meh, music is subjective.
Buried deep on their album Pork Soda. Primus with this little instrumental cut Hamburger Train. Holy fuck does Les get after the bass on this track.

Cracker’s very best work. My most repeated track on Kerosene Hat, because I am a bleak muthafucka:
Goddamn I love that album.
Oh shit, thanks! I forgot about this tune. BTW – this is a great Friday thread!
Eurotrash Girl (hidden way way in the back, even after Hi-Desert Biker Meth Lab)
The full-length, “hidden” version of “Eurotrash” is indeed the tits. I would get all giddy as my CD player would whir through all the empty tracks.
SUCH a great driving album.
One of my favorite Radiohead songs – they’ve never recorded a studio version of this as far as I know.
The White Stripes – Black Jack Davey
https://youtu.be/mmYfGcQOkmg
Speaking of deep cuts – here’s Sheryl Crow teamed up with Neil Finn for a live version of his song “She Will Have Her Way” which you might have heard in the background of a Sports Night episode.
BTW I put together this video with the mp3 specifically for this post. This version of the song is practically impossible to find on teh interwebs these days.

/There is no “share” and “embed” options, and when I “copy embed code” from YouTube, it doesn’t work. Oh well.
Fear not – everything that gets posted (whether iframe, standard youtube, or youtu.be) will make it into the DFO Radio aggregate post.
Rikki; I’m scared anyway, hold me.

“Here’s one of my favorites – the title track from the predecessor to Listen Like Thieves.”
– James Dungy
/going to the land of Andrew Breitbart and Thin Mints for this one
Oof!
An R.E.M. (naturally) non-album track. Photograph, with Natalie Merchant, from around the Automatic era. One of my favourites.
I tried the “share” button on youtube, but no luck. Duchess, if you can embed this, feel free. Thanks.
You have to switch over to the “embed” tag and grab the text that’s got the iframe etc. in it. Things used to be set up to automatically embed anything with the http://youtube prefix but I think it got jettisoned with all the speed upgrades (which at least in my experience have been tremendously effective)
That didn’t work for me, but I also possess great power of compooder stupid.
Also; I open in a new window anyway since the automatic comment refresh stops the song.
http://33.media.tumblr.com/44ea83c4fa3c8c012add8b6282d98dc0/tumblr_nshffqVfoh1rdfgw4o1_500.gif
Yeah…yeah. Wish that wasn’t happening. Looks like it’s right-click-open-in-new-tab for this week, at least.
The least of problems; the yoke in your eggs could be too hard.
To famous?
Well hell. I no can imbed.
Fixed it. Another Rushmore selection!
Before I hated Rod Stewart. HATE! HATE!
It’s a double hitter deep track and awesome cover. Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman performing “Hey Jude”
Ooh! My original thought was to aim for good music with this thing, but maybe someday well-off in the future we’ll have a “Blown Coverage with Chris Conte” edition where we post some of the more disastrous covers that have come out over the years (I’m looking at you, Madonna’s version of “American Pie”).
yeah its just a cover that’s not well known we can mod this comment if you’d like
I’m happy for anyone to post anything they think is worth sharing – the whole “deep cuts” thing is basically just a guideline to help inspire ideas.
Can’t you just get your limes at the store?
Oh, request LINES.
“YES, I REQUESTED SOME LINES, NOW WHAT THE HELL IS THE GODDAMNED HOLDUP?”

“You might recognize this one from the Rushmore soundtrack; it was originally released on the 1966 album Aftermath. I find myself humming it whenever I see Phil wind up and heave a pass my way.”
– Malcom Floyd
Hey cats and cool kids. This is your late night DJ beach bound and down yeah right. Ready to drop some music knowledge. During the early to mid ’80’s Talking Heads featured one of the single most bad ass assembly of musicians ever. This was during the time that there was a small rift growing amongst the band. David Byrne was doing his Brian Eno playing, B-52’s producing, renaissance man kind of thing. Tina Weymoth and Chris Franz, also known as the bands rhythym section started their own off shoot kind of urban kind of funk band called the Tom Tom Club. I don’t even have to get into that. I saw these guys twice in 1983, I want to say? Once with Adrian Belew on guitar and each time with the guitar and keyboard from the Brother’s Johnson. Bernie Worrell sounds about right. Amazing shows. They we’re doing their warm up for the “Stop Making Sense” Johnathan Demme movie. Each time they played everything was perfect but some of David Byrne’s “Catherine Wheel” stuff was brand new. And the band was killing it. One of my deepest tracks. Talking Heads “Big Blue Plymouth” from David Byrne’s “Catherine Wheel” album. I bet y’all gonna enjoy this one immensely!
Jimi Hendrix “Bold As Love” extended jam from the box set. This song doesn’t get enough love as it is, but this version… Well, you’ll see:
why you no postie youtubie?
gotta click “share” then click on “embed” fixed it for you
That’s strange. Never had to do it that way before.
Sniff…..
