CFL News:
- The big news here is that, minutes after being rejected for a government loan, the league decided to cancel its 2020 season & shut down.
- It marks the first time since 1919 the Grey Cup will not be presented.
- Unlike other league, a bubble-season may not have saved it.
- The primary source of revenue for the CFL is paid attendance.
- Unlike other leagues whose their TV deals make gate receipts incidental.
- Their TV contract with TSN usually covers shortfalls.
- Taking the year off, versus spending money they don’t have on salaries, might be a better option for the league’s survival.
- Or The Rock could buy it.

Well it’s good to know all of the racial slurs have been removed from the team name and can all be directed at the new team president.
I have not been to this store.

I am glad you have enlightened me.
Just go with the joke.

“Michelle Obama hates politics like John Wick hates killing people.”
Ok, I had no idea Stephen Stills was still alive. And that he stole Ted Stevens’s goatee off of his corpse.
It’s okay, it took me a second too.
To be fair, she seemed to be enjoying it at the time.

Michelle Obama’s necklace is more patriotic than every GOP elected official put together.
Smart move to put Michelle’s speech on before the 4th quarter of the Mavs/Clippers game starts.
Fuck it, I’m just gonna watch Top Gear/Grand Tour reruns from now until September 4th when the Madagascar episode premieres. After that, I don’t give a fuck. I’ll hope for a F-5 tornado to hit. It’s like when Warren Zevon was diagnosed with terminal cancer and his wish was that he could live long enough to see the next Bond movie.
Enjoy every sandwich, and may you have many more.
When Letterman had him on and just let him play whatever he wanted… I cried like a baby. You need to hang in there, my darling dear, if you were to pop your clogs I would be the oldest one left here!
Thanks for the kind thoughts. Nowadays when I get on the horn with a co-worker or colleague and they ask the standard “How you doin’?’ I tell them “tired of living in this timeline but not ready to die just yet!”
Bernie Sanders can stop talking now, we get it.
“Bernie Sanders is the one who can get it.” – me, fanning myself
Wait, I take it back, Eva Longoria is the one who can get it. Redo! Redo! I want my pick back!

Done for the evening. Why? Because The Egg Man shows up very early on Tuesdays and I must meet him at the appointed time. It sounds cryptic/silly but every word of it is true.

Late comeback by Bahston to pull ahead 3-2, I’m just going to assume it benefitted greatly from bullshit calls so I can sleep easy tonight.
Fuck, klobuchar is offensively unfunny
I can’t think of anything that would make me more likely to vote for Trump than to watch the DNC.
“WOW WHEE! WE FOUND ANOTHER ONE THAT COMPLETELY LACKS PERSPECTIVE!”
-The Republican Party
Fuck it. If I wanted to get into a dick-waving contest, I’d go join the BLM protesters
Probably best to skip it. They’re not trying to appeal to you or me (or Moose). They’re trying their best to get non-Trump Republican votes, which is…a strategy. They’ve been trying that for years without success, but y’know…
Yeah, unless you count 2018. Or 2012. Or 2008. Or 2006. Or 1996. Or 1992.
But, you know, other than that, appealing to moderates and swing voters never works.
Whereas relying on young lefty voters to show up works really really well, which is why the Democratic primary was won so easily by Bernie Sanders… oh. Wait.
Young lefty voters fucking buried McCain
Exactly right. They bailed out the D’s in 2008, then grudgingly (but in less numbers) did so again in 2012.
But fuck it, whatever. Dunk on progressives for wanting things to actually be better. In 3 months, everyone gets a big sigh of relief while the poors are ground into oblivion.
Make Brunch Great Again!
I “dunk” on progressives who demand the fruits of winning without actually doing the hard work of persuading the voters. Of building power over a period of time, laying the groundwork. (Note: some progressives actually get it and do this.)
I don’t particularly love the status quo, in which the presidency alternates between someone more-or-less ideologically sympatico with me, and someone waaay to my right — the net result is that the country is further right than I’d like. I’d be happy with a lefty president taking office and going “too far” in that direction some of the time. I was a Warren supporter, but I would have been fine with Sanders getting the nomination (though a little concerned). Biden was pretty low on my list of choices.
The left always swears that their policies would be really really popular, or even that they already are. But when you can’t even persuade a majority of Democratic primary voters of that, how are you going to win a general election? And when your voters don’t show up reliably, why do you expect to be courted aggressively? Democrats go after moderate and swing voters, and old people generally, because they vote.
And please don’t cry to me about how the DNC rigs the primaries or whatever. It’s bullshit, and more importantly, you think the GOP plays paddy-cake in elections? Get your people to turn out consistently, in primaries, in off-year elections. Then you’ll be the ones the party bigshots listen to.
Yeah, I’m the one who doesn’t give a shit about the poor. The people who are threatening to vote for Trump or stay home because they have a sad that John Kasich gets a speaking slot are really showing their concern for the poor. That’s some real Underpants Gnome logic there.
I have stated many times before that my idealism is nothing next to the threat of a ramped up assault on the poorest and most vulnerable communities that will almost certainly occur with a second Trump term. We get to point out the issues with using a segment about George Floyd to announce cops In America are basically good. We get to be upset at the DNC shitting on every proposal raised by the left wing and hilariously announcing they have the most progressive platform ever. We absolutely get to bitch about a psychotic anti-choice Republican getting a prime speaking slot, as well as one whose gubernatorial campaign was based entirely on stripping every social program to nothing. These people should absolutely be dismissed out of hand. What if they pulled in W? Should I just pretend it’s cool in the name of electoral politics to high five a war criminal? Those people wouldn’t think twice about endorsing a slightly more polite Donald Trump. Fuck them. I’ll vote to protect people who need it as much as I can, but I’m not going to rah rah this bullshit.
Oh, I don’t expect you to “rah rah” it.
But, it’s fucking politics. This is how the game is played. When that great gettin’ up day comes when the Left finally gets its dream nominee, then he or she can show us all how it’s done, and run a convention and campaign the way you want it done, and hopefully it won’t lose 40 states like I fear it will.
“Voter participation among young people was higher in 2008 than in 2004—51.1% versus 49.0%.”
Yeah. Wow. Breathtaking. (Source: https://www.pewresearch.org/hispanic/2009/04/30/voter-turnout-rates/)
Which was 2 million more votes, which is crucially important in key states like PA, NC and OH. Combined with the increased female voter participation, it was a lethal hit to McCain.
And again, those weren’t Republican votes, which was my original point.
Obama got 9% of registered Republican voters, which is about 3% of the overall vote, or a little over 2 million. He also got 20% of self-identified conservatives, and 52% of independents.
Having GOP speakers at the convention isn’t really about winning over die-hard GOP voters. John Kasich isn’t really going to bring them over. But wavering GOP voters, who weren’t terribly comfortable with Trump already, and especially independents (who tend to lean GOP), are definitely gettable.
This isn’t anything new, or even unique to Democrats. I think every presidential election year since at least 2004 has featured at least one “crossover” convention speaker. It’s about reassuring moderates that they’re welcome.
Which was about 3% more than Kerry got, and about equitable with the “McCain Democrat” number (about 10%, same as Bush).
Which really just means party affiliation doesn’t mean much to around 10% of party voters. Which is great, I have no problem with that. But as those “cross votes” happen every election, they’re not indicative of any mass support shift to and from either side. They’re just voters who shift based on current economics, values or simply the time of day.
You’re right, there’s always some cross-voters. (It often goes unmentioned that more Clinton primary voters in ’08 defected to McCain than Sanders voters defected to Trump in ’16. Good on ya, Sanders supporters, you did the right thing.)
But you’ve got to compete for those votes, they don’t just happen. A Democratic nominee who doesn’t try to appeal to moderates and independents isn’t going to win.
That’s mostly true for the GOP, too, though I think things are little skewed in their favor — about 40% of voters identify as “conservative,” so just holding on to them gets the GOP a substantial chunk of the way to a majority, whereas only around 20-25% identify as liberal. But the GOP tries, and sometimes the left even buys it — go search for “Trump is outflanking Biden/Clinton from the left” and you’ll see an astonishing number of suckers buying that crap.
Oh, trust me, I do not agree with some of the crap the left is spewing out right now. I’m all for working for the end results, but I do not appreciate any attempts at normalizing Trump, or portraying his policies as anything other than the sociopathic drivel that they are.
As for the cross-voting…I’m not sure. If you have 10% of Dem voters voting for Bush, I’m not convinced they’re reliable D voters. And the same could probably be said by a right-winger about R votes going to Obama. I would think a large part of it is voters picking a party due to regional representation, but making different considerations on a national level.
Yeah, there is some weirdness with, e.g., people in West Virginia who are still registered Democrat but haven’t voted for one in decades.
But I have met people who truly do have crossover voting history. I remember one guy was not a big fan of second terms, and voted for Reagan in ’80 but not ’84, Clinton in ’92 but not ’96, and was otherwise a fairly standard-issue Democrat.
I’m not a big James Carville guy, but he made a comment one time, “I love people but I hate voters,” that’s pretty spot-on. Voting is a real mixed bag for a lot of people (witness the mass support of M4A vs. neither party supporting it) and for others it’s just R or D down the line. I get the difficulty tapping into the inconsistencies, although I do think the Dems need to increase their platform to something beyond “Not Trump.”
None of those years (except possibly 2018) were heavily influenced by Republican-turned-Democrat votes. The R’s hated Clinton. They hated Obama. They didn’t vote for either one.
According to the article, this will be playing in Redshirt land soon.

Devo-related high school basketball anecdote? So glad you asked!
Okay, we’re in a weekend tourney in Sault Ste. Marie. During layup drills the home team has a few songs piped over the P.A. system and the one that gets played most often is ‘We’re Through Being Cool’. We are losing our shit and razzing the team so hard. After all, these tunes are supposed to build you up. Why the fuck are you playing this?
Fast-forward about 2 months later, that same team has been invited to our tournament. Something goes wonky with our P.A. system. The “only” song that plays during warmups? (on a continual loop) Donna Summers’ version of MacArthur’s Park.
Yeah, we got a bit of grief from that team and the other team and the other team after that.
For some perspective, The Soo just discovered Devo last year

You New Traditionalists are so sensitive!
Well, we know what the creative tension was for the band; the Mothersbaughs (Mark and Bob) liked Thinmints and the Casales (Gerald and Bob) put too much mayo in the deviled eggs.

Is suppuku cutting a triangle in the guts or a square? I know they said AJ Green will be fine, but I want to be ready just in case.
It may also be useful if Biden blows this cakewalk of a Presidential Race.
Isn’t it just a straight line across? Maybe a pentagram if you’re cool and dark.
Straight line is my take, with your designated “second” beheading you when you have made the cut. Source: read the book several times over the last 40 years, and watching the mini-series two or three times (once fairly recently!).
What book? “Shogun” or “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”?
Could be both, but for now we’ll respond positively to Shogun. Dozo, gozaimashita.

Don’t you think that Green is done? Since 2016 he’s played a total of 35 games out of 64. He’s 32 and seems to be headed downward.
Id say he’s been done since 2011.
Draft Day, 2011, to be more precise.
Hey, he and The Red Rocket had some good times together. Even when there was no peanut butter around.
Uncertain. Reports are this was his best Training Camp in years. His routes were so fluid, it was like he was a track. Hopefully this quad thing is just to keep him healthy.
Him just being on the field will open up the other receivers and make Burrow’s life so much easier.
Whoa. Didn’t they just put on pads today? I think you need a nice cup of Tee. (Higgins)
Look, my party has gone two-clicks left of Nazism and the Reds season is paused due to COVID. You gotta give me this one, please?
“My party”
This, I just don’t get. I vote for candidates, not parties. I say this as a person whose father, grandfather and great-grandfather (and many other relatives) represented the Canadian Liberal Party as town councilors, mayors, provincial members of parliament and the Senate.
This guy gets it.
No sports for me tonight, I am fully committed to the livestream of the DNC (that will be playing on my laptop on the opposite side of the room while I watch sports on TV).
Night 1 of the DNC this year is one Rob Lowe away from being night 1 of the RNC
Apparently what I was looking at wasn’t the schedule, but a list of Conservative speakers from the whole thing. Slightly less doomy that way. Slightly.
They stuck them in Night 1 to get us in the door. Night 2 is when you’ll begin the reeducation process.
THAT is something I’d watch.
John Kasich pretending to be moderate? Meh.
Well, compared to the current breed of Republicans…
Current Dems = ’80s Republicans
Current GOP = Batshit crazy
John Kasich = Somewhere in-between
Not sure if this is before or after his time on the Lolita express, but still feels right
Speaking of which, we’re still doing the Bill Clinton thing, huh? That shit was iffy last time around.
That’s depended on what the definition of the word “was” was.
/scowls, upvotes reluctantly
I just love how people are complaining they have (gasp) Republicans on the scheduled. That’s right, three of them in night one. That’s almost 20% of everyone whose supposed to speak tonight!
I love all of you for allowing me to occasionally wave my right wing without demanding my real name, IP address and list of my fears. Though there are times I step too far or inadvertently hit a berserk button or two, but you guys give me a chance to explain my views or let me be me.
But to those who complain that they are letting GOPs into the Democratic Clubhouse, they have to understand that just because we won’t vote for Trump doesn’t mean we’ll vote for Biden. We can stay home drinking until our liver files a restraining order. Don’t think you’re entitled to my vote. You have to earn it. If that means taking 10 minutes for us to have a moment while they rest of you go to the bathroom or microwave pizza rolls, so be it.
I have no problem with the GOP speakers, but “earning your vote” should be as simple as “our guy is not insane”
Probably, although the concerns of Biden’s mental decline are not unfounded. And that’s not really a knock…they guy got old. Lucky him! But I really wish the Dems were more interested in younger candidates than this constant retreat to the old guard.
That’s what happens when you neglect the Farm System.
Oh, absolutely. As well as losing some 1000 legislative seats in an 8-year period. And it gets worse as younger Dems get more progressive, and their elders actively work against them.
That’s why I’m voting Biden. I’m thinking of not watching any of his speeches so I won’t slip up like I did in 2008.
/ Political Trigger Warning: Republican values that would upset you even though its a joke, this comment is, not the values which are serious…I’m just digging this hole deeper and deeper…
(flashback to how I voted in 2008)
Obama: “I support abortion because I don’t want my daughter to live with a mistake.”
Me: “Its not a mistake; its a baby!”
(angrily fills out Absentee Ballot for McCain and turns it in mailbox)
Me: “DAMMIT! I voted for the old guy and the cheerleader!”
Bigger mistake: Young girl chooses abortion or old man chooses a retarded Alaskan as running mate?
The 2nd one. The 1st one, you can learn from it, how to live with soul-destroying guilt and come out of it a better person who will make better choices to avoid getting back in that position.
You can’t excuse the 2nd one!
The Leftists feel the same way, so…
Will next week’s RNC feature Clint Eastwood delivering a monologue to his rocking chair or sofa from his living room?

Except for Sopranos, Justified, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul (and I’m 2 seasons behind on that), I haven’t watched regular TV in 20 years; that clip certainly seems a bit different than I can remember seeing on any preview ads for Fox’s Animation Domination during a late-slot Cowboys game.
I’d say that was shameful, but it would require shame from the audience.
