Tonight’s target: This fucking guy.

How this fucking look is still worth two penalties & seven points a game is beyond me. I thought that shit ended the second he left Gillette’s distribution network.

He’s made previous appearances in Hate Weeks 2017, 2018 & 2019. He only lost out on last year thanks to the running of Derrick Henry and – I can’t believe I’m saying this – the quarterbacking prowess of Ryan Tannehill.

His lasting legacy in the league, aside from all the championships, will be the “reffing bitch face” after any contact trying to draw a penalty.

He changed teams & that simple fact led his new team to mortgage their future on a “win now” mentality. The Bucs in three years are going to be where the Patriots are now, but they’ll have their fucking trophy. Maybe the Chiefs can drag Bill Callahan out of retirement down to Florida to run Mahomes’ offence on Sunday just to cement another Tampa victory.

But, I guess we did find out this year if it was Brady or Belichick holding up the dynasty. And it’s not just stats that bear that out,

Christ. Guys continue to blow him years after Brady forgot they played with him. Where’s Drew Bledsoe celebrating the fact that his broken ribs blessed the league with Tom Brady?! Because he’s already walked back the “career backup” quote. It just makes Brady’s continued ownership of Super Bowl Sunday aggravating as fuck. I hope when his Hall of Fame election comes up we are at least blessed with stories about him kicking immigrant babies holding puppies, or something equally horrific, so there’s some tarnish that someone will have to fight to defend.

I don’t consider myself one, but I admit to some tendencies in that direction. Where it gets tedious is with the one-upmanship and the obsessions with “authenticity” and obscurity. (“oh, yes, that ramen shop on Sawtelle Blvd in L.A. is ok I guess, but it’s not as good as the one I like in Tokyo” “Oh, Tokyo has ok ramen I guess, if you haven’t been to this one place in a tiny village in Hokkaido…”)

Sometimes widely available mass-produced stuff is actually really fucking good.

And yeah, music hipsters… ugh. But is it my imagination (or my refusal to engage in dialogue with them), or has the obsession with “any band that’s popular has sold out” kind of died out a bit in the era when every band is hustling to promote itself online and the whole “too cool to try to win fans” attitude is dead?

So I was going to ask if there are big Hall of Fame debates in non-North American sports — like, do people intensely argue over whether some bloke should be in the English Football Hall of Fame (“oi, he was the best wingback of his era!” “Nah, mate, he was very good, but this ain’t the Hall of Very Good”) — but then I stopped and realized that even in North America, it’s pretty much just baseball that has these big controversies. Like, I’m a reasonably devoted hockey fan, and I can’t really tell you who is supposed to be in that isn’t or vice versa. But I can rattle off about a dozen baseball players who people argue about.

Is it just that baseball is more up its own ass with mythology? The voting methods used? The pretentiousness of baseball writers? The fact that baseball is more statistics-driven so there’s more to argue about?

Hockey has an 18-person committee, no set breakdown between former players/media/etc., but I count three people currently who are pure media members, plus a fourth (Pierre McGuire — ugh) who has mostly worked in media but started as a coach. The others are all former players and/or executives, some of whom have done some broadcast work too but it isn’t really what they’re known for.

Too lazy to look up the other ones right now.

I’m purrrty sure the Hall Of Fame is an US/North MURRICAn thing, because I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it being an actual thing at least in football… probably because participation trophies aren’t nearly as big over ‘ere as over there 😀 The closest we get, I think, is the Ballon d’Or, but that’s for active players and is supposed to be given to the best player of the preceding year (though in practice it goes to Messi or Crystiano Ronaldo), but it’s losing is lustre even faster than the various sports Hall Of “WaitWhoDat?” 😀

So I realize the “participation trophy” thing was probably a joke, but I actually think that one of the ways that “lesser footy” gets right is not having the “all or nothing” mentality that is common here. In North American sports, so many fans have bought into the thinking that only championships matter that it’s now accepted gospel that one should tank for one or two seasons, then spend two or three more rebuilding, in the hopes of winning a championship 4-6 years from now, whereas teams that are competitive for 4-6 years but don’t manage to win the title are treated as failures. My impression is that in a lot of European soccer leagues, many fan bases are honest about “yeah, we’d be thrilled to finish 6th and qualify for Europa.” (Of course, part of that may be because championships are seen as unachievable for many teams, Leicester City’s miracle run notwithstanding.) And of course, having non-league tournaments like Champions and Europa and FA Cup help with that, too.

Not sure if anyone here gives a shit (though I suspect a couple of you are of similar mindset to me), but if you are interested in really creative and talented metal fabrication and Krazy Kustom Karz, there’s a guy named Ian Roussel that has a show called Full Custom Garage that plays on Maverick TV and Motor Trend TV who just fucking hits it out of the park, makes all kind of nutzoid custom vehicles like Ed Roth-CarToons-Rat Fink kind of stuff; as well as insane modifications to gigantic work vehicles, and awesome lead-sleds. Apparently he serves as muse/Vulcan-the-metalsmith to a bunch of SoCal auto eccentrics with real deep pockets and really wild ideas and tastes that he encourages and augments. He really is an artist in the true sense of the word, and his mien is so mellow and laid back that I was gobsmacked to find he grew up in New York(!). I think he is an autodidact, self-taught that learned all his skills on the job; no trade schools or anything like that. He now lives and works near Gene Winfield’s shop (worth it to google or Wikipedia that guy, he’s fucking incredible; among other things he designed all the vehicles in the original Blade Runner as well as the original Star Trek shuttle Galileo and the SUX-6000 in the first Robocop; even at 93 he just keeps on chooglin’) in Mojave CA up by Willow Springs Raceway.
As a former machine tool operator (MR in navy-speak); it is very relaxing to watch his talent being displayed. Fake deadlines and drama as seen in so many car shows (and reality shows in general) are not entirely absent, but they seem to be kept to a minimum. Just an incredible talent.
Sorry to bore y’all with this late posting, but since it is so late I may end up sharing this again tomorrow, (forewarned you are, yes) because this guy’s show really rates the exposure. And I am drunk. And probably will be again tomorrow evening.

Yeah, I just looked at his feed now, and can’t say I see anything interesting there.

I don’t know if he’s just given up on getting another media job, but if I were in the business I wouldn’t go near him with a 10-foot pole even if I was 1000% convinced that he was innocent, and not because of fear of bad P.R. He just seems to have a massive chip on his shoulder and won’t change the subject.

And ok, maybe he was truly broken by what happened to him, but repeatedly ranting about it on social media doesn’t help convince anyone that you’re a great dude who deserves another chance. (Which, again, may not be his goal. But the impression I get is of that guy you regret starting a conversation with at the bar.)

Not sure if anyone else had to go thru this back in grades 1-6 but every year a dental ‘person’ would come in unannounced (it had to be that way, otherwise dozens of kids would have called out sick) and teach us proper brushing technique with disposable toothbrushes and a lemony toothpaste that made everyone sick to their stomach. Imagine the taste of lemon multiplied by 10. It was so awful.
