That Scattered Thursday Night Open Thread

Hey, what’s up fellow denizens of the intranets? Here are my brain thingys from the last few days and some other things.

What’s the Appeal?: Elliot Gould. Kudos to the guy for working regularly since the late 60’s but I don’t get it. M*A*S*H* was horribly misogynistic and The Long Goodbye was warmed-over noir stuff. Was he supposed to be an alternative to leading men like John Wayne and Steve McQueen, that guy that was the opposite of cool? Let me know.

Obituary Time: I was caught by surprise that Karl Wallinger passed away late last week at the age of 66. Damn. If you liked “The Big Sound” phase of the Waterboys as exemplified in the albums A Pagan Place and This is the Sea, well that was Wallinger’s influence. Earlier Waterboys tunes were rough and lacked coherence and he reigned in Mike Scott while providing arrangements for the saxaphone, piano and violin-they were by far their best albums in my mind. He went on to form World Party-does anyone remember Mike Scott’s tune by that name that he screamed his way through? Karl’s tune by the same name (different lyrics) was open, humble and giving. I recall him working his concern about the environment into his songs thus earning the label ‘hippie’ because it was too easy to do so. All of us have those underrated artists that didn’t hit it big but just churned out good music. He’s near the top of my list.

Qaron in the News: All he does these days it seems is backpedal on statements that he’s blurted out unthinkingly (or, more worryingly, thoughtfully) whether it’s his Achilles heel recovery, thoughts about Fauci, Kimmel being a pedo or some garbage about Sandy Hook. He reeks of a guy that talked all kinds of shit in the safety of Green Bay and never had to account for himself but New York is a different kind of animal, Rodgers. (likely a chupacabra) He’s just another too-clever by half shithead that thinks that his superior intellect enables him to ‘see’ what others can’t. And so down the rabbit holes he goes, believing most everything that like-minded souls tell him. A clownish hamster if there ever was one.

Rumor Mill: It’s telling me that Desmond Ridder is getting the hell outta Dodge and landing on the Cards in return for Rondale Moore. That’s good for both of them, they both need a new place to start over. Did Art Smith ruin the guy forever? Like Qaron, I’m just going to believe what I believe no matter the evidence.

Games People Play: Men’s college basketball is revving up and ranked teams playing tonight include #7 Iowa State, # 8 Creighton, #11 Duke, #14 Baylor, Dayton, WSU and Nevada as well.

Wherefore Sillycuse?: As to be expected eventually, coach Red Autry lost the thread vs NC State, allowing his most talented players Judah Mintz and Quadir Copeland to play one on two or three, taking ill-advised shots or throwing the ball away when they got caught in mid-air. When the team actually runs the offense and finds the open man they can be formidable (they won 20 for the first time in forever it seems) but Red’s inner Boeheim won’t call his stars to task. Ah well.

Enjoy the evening’s offerings.

I would proudly join Scotchie on a good killing spree, and we’ll have a good ol’ time and a bountiful harvest. But if he ever talks bad about Elliott Gould or Robert Altman there’s gonna be an extra shallow grave in North Ontario, and I won’t guarantee who it will be. But I’m pretty sure Neil Young will write a song about it, or at least wish he did.

Pool update.

Whatever seal coat they put on this thing had been stinking for 36 hours and shows little sign of letting up. They say like 3 more days til can walk on it. Dudes put a lot of effort into this thing.

Gumby went to the store for me earlier, and after he took the stuff out to the car he rushed back in, went to every place he’d been, and finally asked the cashier if she had seen his glasses. She said “you mean the ones on your face?” Bless him, he is endlessly entertaining!

blaxabbath

Did he also armed rob her?

That would be mad 49ers fan business.

I have at times been holding them by one side in my mouth as I look around for them.

I’d like to that NC State for their part in exposing Duke as the absolute clown frauds they are this year.

The Rooney Family all went there, and the football field (yes, it’s real) is named Art Rooney Stadium.

If God wants to finish Ohio, He’s also aiming for Philly later tonight.

I mean, it’s bad for America but maybe not bad for accuracy

SonOfSpam

Porter and Bass combined for about 22% and none of that is going to Garvey.

ballsofsteelandfury

Porter already claimed it was rigged, so…

Gumbygirl

Yeah, she’s disappointing.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

What she should have done is complained that Adam Schiff fought dirty. Say it was “rigged” is just terrible, terrible…uh, what’s the audio version of “optics”?

Horatio Cornblower

I don’t really think it’s fair that all of Garvey’s kids were allowed to vote.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

When I was in high school I had a crush on a girl whose last name was Garvey. Back then she was a smoking hot gymnast, but now she lives in a southern state and thinks that penicillin turns you into a werewolf or whatever bonkers theory those lunatics are embracing now.

Redshirt

Okay, based on the number of Tornado Warnings, it appears God has conceded the argument and has begun to wipe Ohio off the face of the Earth.

He’s fair game, but leave his waifu out of this.

Too far to drive, and Modern is better anyway if you’re going to New Haven.

Trigo Wood Fired is in Willimantic. Very good and run by very nice people.

Wooster Street is the only negative to taking the train to New York as opposed to driving.

Horatio Cornblower

There’s a stop in New Haven. You can get out, go get a pizza, then catch another train.

For a small fee I can also arrange to have Lowratio meet your train with the pizza of your choice in hand.

Oh and fuck Aaron Rodgers with every rusted tool in the shed.

MASH (1970, d. Robert Altman) the movie was a piece of Robert Altman brilliance. Misogynistic? Whenever someone uses that word I tell ’em take a Midol. Get over it and welcome to real life. M*A*S*H the TV show (note the difference in spelling between the two) was absolutely terrible and I’m surprised Alan Alda’s Hawkeye didn’t get pregnant in one episode and Colonel Potter had to give him an illegal abortion with a jeep antenna and then we all had to hear a moralistic lecture about misogyny.

The Long Goodbye (1973, d. Robert Altman) was another piece of Robert Altman brilliance that is considered part of the glorious trilogy of films that is The Big Sleep (1946, d Howard Hawks), The Long Goodbye, and The Big Lebowski (1988, d. Joel Coen). The three best Philip Marlowes are Humphrey Bogart, Elliott Gould, and Jeff Bridges.

Perhaps you actually have an issue with Robert Altman? If so, you are wrong.

And let’s not forget Gould in Little Murders (1971, d. Alan Arkin), one of the blackest of black comedies ever.

King Hippo

My issue with MASH was that it always got too preachy/up its own asshole.

I only ever saw the TV show version, though.

Brick Meathook

You mean you only saw M*A*S*H, you never saw MASH.

ArmedandHammered

I loved the movie much more than the series, the acting talent alone is realms higher.

BugEyedBoo

It kind of went from comedy to dramedy as time wore on.

Brick Meathook

You mean The National Hero Hollywood Sub Boy. FTFY

I love me some Robert Mitchum but his Marlowe is a proud 4th place (it should be lower due to the one set in England)

I’m only stating my opinion but as always my opinion is absolutely correct.

ballsofsteelandfury

Best Phillip Marlowe is book Phillip Marlowe.

ballsofsteelandfury

I heard Richard Blade talking about this earlier in the week. I did not know about the Waterboys, only World Party.

He played this song in his honor:

I was just talking to Gumby about Kurt Wallinger! Damn, that sucks.
