Monday Evening Thread – Vacation edition

Hello every one, I am on vacation in beautiful Door County Wisconsin if cherries and whitefish are your thing, you will be in heaven.  No heat wave here, although the locals did complain about it getting to 90F here last week.  Today is a nice cool 75 with a nice breeze off the lake and a wonderfully sunny day.  Fuck NC and Fuck Work.

We really do like it here and we have added this area to the retirement list, as my wife is finding she hates the heat more than the cold.  Although the real estate market is insane, thanks to all the Boomers retiring and moving up here.  I guess Florida is getting too hot even for them or maybe it is the hurricanes.  Whatever, they are harshing my buzz when I look at the real estate market here.  As a bonus, when civilization falls or the zombies arise, the only way into Door County (other than by boat) is by a single bridge – a drawbridge.  Plenty of orchards, fish, dairy and veggie farms.  Plus, Washington Island is only a ferry or boat ride away (actually in winter you can drive across the ice I think).  Defensible, sustainable with some occasional scavenging, and with access to Detroit, Chicago, and numerous homes via the lake.  Of course the ravenous hordes coming from Chicago (human and/or zombie) will be hard to keep out if They Are Billions has taught me anything.  I learn all my survival skills from video games, hence, I shall be one of the first to die.

Anyway, where do you like to go and/or do on vacation – I do not mean sight seeing travel – I mean where you can be with your family or friends, sleep in, read, relax, and just chill?  Any trip that involves a very specific itinerary or travel every other day, is not a vacation, that is a tour.  My Better 3/4 loves trips that involve exploring the area, hiking for the perfect view, shopping for that perfect gift, or reveling in the history.  She calls that a vacation, I call that exhausting.  I like a much, much more relaxed approach to a vacation, say a week at the beach where all food and drink are already in the house and we have to do nothing but cook it.  If the car did not move for 5 days, I would have no problem with that.  To me a vacation is sloth and gluttony combined into one glorious week of no one calling, emailing, or texting us from work or family drama shit.  Oh and the weed, definitely the weed.

So, tell all about your favorite vacations including any great stories!

Cardiac arrest, and EMS goes to the wrong address.

THIS WAS NOT MY FAULT.

Honestly, I don’t know what got fucked up. I do know where, and it happened before I even entered my primary information. It’s all right there in the logs.
It’s a fuck up alright, but it’s not mine. They don’t even look all that similar.

Thanks, Tony.

I have a subscription to Harry’s shaving products, which are actually pretty good, and feature a 5-blade razor that shaves very close and smooth.

I just bought some tickets and after purchase I was offered a discount subscription to Dollar Shave Club who are offering a revolutionary 6-blade razor.

I remember when revolutionary 2-blade disposable razors were introduced and SNL did a parody commercial featuring a fictional (and therefore ridiculous) 3-blade razor.

yeah right

I can honestly say that some of my best vacations or “trips” if you prefer involved the beautiful mutants from this here site.

Something about sharing a group experience with people you already know and respect and will soon love upon meeting in person.

Too weird to live and too rare to die.

When’s the next gathering of the tribe?

Doktor Zymm

It would be super fun to get together in Chicago, maybe some time in September when the weather is good and both baseball and football are in play

Brick Meathook

I mentioned a glorious Chargers game in August at SoFi (tickets start at $5) but that might only appeal to SoCal DFOers, if even them.

WCS

Yinz should all come here for the Draft.

I won’t be there, but yinz can be.

Horatio Cornblower

It’s OK if you’re not there.

Not like we don’t know a number we can call and bug you at.

My favs are all loner missions.

I’m sure I’ll get something with the boy but, in general, Freedom doesn’t have a pocket planner.

I would posit that a cruise counts as vacation even though there is a specific itinerary and a lot of moving about because the travel literally happens while you are sleeping and you don’t actually have to do anything on the itinerary if you don’t want to. Best of both worlds.

FOX News is letting me know that there was an unsolved murder in California. Kamala Harris is solely to blame. Not just for the case being unsolved, but everything bad that’s ever happened in California since 2002.

Also, MIGRANT CRIME is out of control (not statistically, but vibes) and since she’s migrant-adjacent, it’s her fault. Science.

I got to spend a week in Chicago and a week in DC by myself during the day, while my wife was taking classes. That was five weekdays each week of wandering around looking in museums. I knew my wife well enough to know that a whole day walking around the Air and Space Museum or the Museum of Science and Industry would not have been her thing.

SonOfSpam

That’s awesome, do fun stuff on your own during the day, get unenthusiastic pity sex at night.

Ideal vacation is going back to St. John, hiking in the national park that takes up half the island, doing some snorkeling with turtles, then going to Skinny Legs for burgers and about two too many rum and punches.

Sounds better than (gestures vaguely at my life) this.

Yes, yes, Orange County, so miserable.

Last funny:

The spelling of “bourgeoisie” was intended as yet another means of oppression

BugEyedBoo

I’m glad I never had to say it the way I thought it was pronounced (bore-gee-oice-ee) before I found out how it was really pronounced. ‘Bourgeoisie’ wasn’t a word I heard in conversation very often back in West ByGod.

Defensible and sustainable are two excellent top priorities for your Final Destination.

I think planning for a predictable cold may easily be preferable to trying to prepare for unfamiliar extreme heats. Those little islands up north, but for being accessible, seem like potential winner.

Senor Weaselo

I don’t know about defensible, but nothing more sustainable than no items, Fox only!

Brick Meathook

I just had a Kick-Ass®™ home made salad. Very healthy.

The bulk of it was fresh chopped spinach, with auxiliary romaine and iceberg for crunch and texture. Added in were fresh chopped raw broccoli, diced cucumber, diced celery, cubed fresh Roma tomato, sliced mushrooms tossed in balsamic vinegar, canned low-salt snow peas (I ain’t shuckin’ raw pea pods)sliced black olives, and crumbled feta cheese, and a table spoon of balsamic vinegar – olive oil dressing, tossed in a sealed storage container (minimal dressing coats everything) and I just ate it right out of the container. All fresh (except the peas) and very healthy.

I love the spinach because it makes me want to beat somebody up, preferably a fat bearded sailor.

I followed this up with the entrée of about ten Fun-Sized®™ Snickers®™ bars, plus a large strawberry milkshake with Reddi-Whip®™ real-style imitation whipped cream, a six pack of beer, and then a large steak & cheese sandwich, then more beer.

Any trip that involves a very specific itinerary or travel every other day, is not a vacation, that is a tour.

Based on this definition I have not taken a “vacation” in almost fifteen years, which not coincidentally is right around the time that I met the Dr. Mrs.

Also, the booth for Dos Hermanos tequila was giving out bandannas which happen to be orange and aqua, so I’ve got something to wear in the Clubhouse when the Dolphins win a Super Bowl.

What?

Well, DJ3000 has access to time travel, right?

Found a funny:

If you think the attacks on Kamala for not having any children are misogynistic, imagine if she had 5 kids by 3 different men.

ballsofsteelandfury

At what point does Michelle Obama start her run for the presidency?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

If she wanted it, she could have done it this week. She doesn’t want it.

ballsofsteelandfury

I don’t think so. I think she’s waiting for the right time.

ballsofsteelandfury

Or, more likely, the DNC is waiting for the right time. I’m thinking it will be when the polls start showing how Kamala will lose to Trump.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

A) you’re giving the DNC too much credit for 3D chess (though I’ll admit I didn’t give the Biden camp enough credit for waiting until after the RNC spent all week talking about Biden being too old before dropping out)
B) you’re also overcomplicating this. Kamala basically gets 95+% of the vote Biden would get plus a shot at GOTV for a swath that was threatening to/going to stay home. She doesn’t move a ton of moderates but this was going to be decided by mobilization and not massively expanding the map. Unless Harris completely shits the bed in the next month, she’s the nominee and November is a coin toss between her and Trump.

Brick Meathook

It ain’t gonna be a coin toss. It’s just like 2016 where the Democrats put their weakest candidate against Trump. Before Biden’s debate fiasco the Democratic talk was more about replacing Harris than replacing Biden. I hate Trump and I hate this fact but a fact it is.

BugEyedBoo

I think Biden got the shitty end of the stick, and I hate to say this, but I think Harris will do better than Biden at this point. Biden on his worst day is ten times better than Trump on his best day, but Biden was just looking and sounding frail. And the press was not going to let up even if Biden started doing 100 one-armed push-ups on the White House lawn.

Kamala has a few advantages – as a practicing Catholic, Biden never seemed comfortable talking about reproductive rights, and she’s been harping on that as a key issue as VP*. She’s neutralized all of the Trump campaign’s effort being made against Biden. Trump is now the oldest presidential candidate in US history.

* John Nance Garner, FDR’s VP before Truman, said that the vice presidency wasn’t worth a bucket of warm piss.

BugEyedBoo

I get to reuse that crack – the Democrats managed to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I see that DJ 3000 and DTZM are not our only visitors from a different timeline.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I have a buddy who is obsessed with Lake Houses. Like we have traveled together with families, other friends, just us, and he will ALWAYS start the negotiation with “here are three different lakes where we can rent houses”.

I prefer a cushy hotel with beach access and at least two bars.

Brick Meathook

Wow, I googled Door County just to see where it was and you really should write a little more detail about it, such as where it is, what it’s like, how it got its name:

It is named after the strait between the Door Peninsula and Washington Island. This dangerous passage, known as Death’s Door, contains shipwrecks and was known to Native Americans and early French explorers.

Here’s a detail from the NOAA nautical chart. Note the Porte des Morts Passage which is French for “Door of Death.” As far as waterway passages go, that’s pretty insane (Cape Horn doesn’t even have names that bad) and this is on a friggin’ lake.

https://ibb.co/gJLK4Dc

Yes, that’s the passage the ferry boat you mentioned crosses, but I think you should rent a boat and traverse that passage yourself and tell us about it if you survive. If you do, you will always be able to say you sailed through The Door of Death and lived to tell the tale. Use the French name if you want to sound fancy.

It’s only 2 miles across, although 2 miles across “Death’s Door” might seem like 100 miles. Rent a motor boat, but a small sailboat is even better. I think a canoe or kayak is probably not a good idea. If I was there I’d do that in a second, but I’m a pretty good sailor, on sailboats large and small, not just submarines.

Brick Meathook

Some more Death’s Door lore:

In 1978 it was reported that waves in the Porte des Morts passage can exceed those in Green Bay or Lake Michigan by up to 0.6 meters (two feet).

Water conditions begin to deteriorate in August and are worst in October and November, when lakewide wave heights of 5 to 10 feet are encountered about 35 percent of the time. In October, southerly through southwesterly winds are most often responsible for the waves, while by November westerly through northerly winds often generate rough water conditions.

Waves of 10 feet or more are encountered 3 to 5 percent of the time from November through March. Extreme waves of 20 to 22 feet have been encountered. During the spring, high waves are infrequent, but 5- to 10-foot waves develop 15 to 30 percent of the time in the south and 20 to 40 percent in the north. In the summer, waves climb above 10 feet less than 1 percent of the time, while those in the 5- to 10-foot range drop to less than 20 percent in June and July.

That’s bigger than the waves on Santa Monica Bay (the Pacific Ocean) along the Los Angeles County coast. Historically, waves here will only get near ten feet if there’s a freaky hurricane strength storm nearby, which is pretty rare. This Death’s Door place ten-footers are fairly normal.

ballsofsteelandfury

My idea of vacation is going somewhere and exploring. Yes, it’s exhausting, but it feeds my brain.

Ideally, I like to combine the two. For example, go to Cancún to an all-inclusive, vegg out at the pool or ocean, eat all I want, drink all I want, but then take a day trip to Chicken Itza or Tulum.
