Had a great weekend, as it was the wife’s bday so I tried to coddle her as much as possible so we had a great weekend. Word count, word count.
I used to make fun of the people who spent so much money on their hidden bunkers or remote cabins. Now, now I am jealous of them. I would love to just go into a well outfitted bunker and just disappear for a few years. I would rather learn about what happened than live through it at this point.
In the spirit of the 25 Questions posts, I started asking my wife questions in that vein while watching GEICO commercial where the gecko is at breakfast and talks about bundling insurance. So the first question was, is the gecko a friend, an overnight guest, the host of an AIRBnB, but why would he be having breakfast with these people? And who served him, why would you give a gecko a human sized portion of foods that are probably poisonous to the gecko. And if it is a friend, was he friends with one of the couple first? And why is it not considered rude for the gecko to wander around basically barefoot on a table where food is being served?
First, an enquiry was made into the level of stonation I was experiencing (only 2 on a 11 point scale), next was a sigh, and a quietly spoken “I do love you”. No answers were offered up, so, does that commercial bring up questions in your mind, do you have any answers?

I think Vietnam protests had an influence. Not as much as some of the Boomer nostalgia would claim, but some.
I think the George Floyd protests created a window for some reforms to policing and prosecution — I’m not sure how much of that really stuck and/or was effective, but it mattered.
I’d say more often than not they don’t, but if that’s not the aim then I don’t see the point. Are these protests preventing ICE from deporting anyone? Are they just going to say “oh well, never mind then”?
Trump et al are HOPING for more fires and destruction and violence. And that’s always a risk with any protest movement, because there’s destructive assholes in every crowd. So why run that risk if there’s nothing to accomplish other than protesters patting themselves on the back?
The LA riots in 92 turned very quickly from a legit outpouring of frustration at the system to a chance for opportunistic assholes to loot and wreak havoc just because they could.
Actually, some citizens-showing-up-and-yelling actions HAVE deterred some ICE actions. So the protests have value, if for no other reason to show that a LOT of people don’t agree with this shit. And I couldn’t care less that the Mexican flag makes some people queasy, as we’re not reaching those people anyway.
And of course, gotta stay peaceful, no matter how much punching nazis is right.
There’s not a sea of people out there who are undecided and willing to be swayed by people gathering and holding up signs. Protests don’t move opinion, they publicly demonstrate the depth and extent of existing opinion in a way that polls and newspapers can’t. If protests are large enough and persistent enough then they CAN change policy, but whether a movement gets to that point isn’t going to be swayed by the ‘optics’ of the protest
Oh, the optics of that are terrible. And all the people indignantly defending it online (“well, LA is a Mexican city, and I don’t see you complaining about Irish flags in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day!”) are clueless.
Wave those flags on Cinco de Mayo all you want. A protest that you KNOW is going to be painted as an insurrection by foreigners is not the time and place.
