TGIF! Happy Independence Day! Try not to JPP yourself this evening. We need those fingers around so you can continue to type dick jokes here.
Word Count Filler Time
No one’s reading this but rules are rules and math never lies. So here’s the etymology on common phrases. Number 2 will shock you!
1: Give A Damn
Today this understood to mean something is quite insignificant. The origin was from England military in India during the 18th century. In India dam was a coin of little value, much like a penny.
2: Lick Into Shape
We know this phrase as meaning to get ready. This one comes from a superstition about bears. The belief was that a cub was born shapeless and that the mother and father bear used their tongues to shape that cub into proper bear like shape. This superstition lasted for a long time because anyone that actually was daring enough to witness a newborn cub never survived the encounter.
3: At First Blush
Obviously this means at first glance. And indeed that is exactly what the phrase meant when it was used in the 16th century. Back then blush wasn’t a makeup term because it didn’t exist at the time, but instead meant glimpse.
4: Cakewalk
While this now means something that’s easy, it’s origins are from something rather difficult. In the 19th century there was an African-American contest that entailed a couple to walk arm in arm. The judging was based on style and gracefulness with the winner getting a literal cake. Then the boxing world co-opted the word for an easy victory. Why and how? Well spend a few years getting punched in the face and many inane things will seem appropriate to you.
Alright, that’s enough reading and writing for the day. Let’s blow some shit up! But not your fingers please.
