Let’s answer some common questions.

Q: Why are yawns contagious?
A: Studies have shown that merely showing a picture of someone yawning does not cause people to yawn. Instead the studies show that covering your mouth while yawning does not prevent others from yawning, Also, watching a video does induce others to yawn. This is isn’t universal as the response was in 40%-60% of people. Not surprising, more empathetic and self-aware people are more susceptible.

Q: What causes liver spots?
A: Not the liver! Those spots are the result of hyperpigmentation in patches of skin. This is mostly due to prolonged exposure to the sun, but surgery, pregnancy, and some drugs can also cause them.

Q: Why does OJ taste bad after brushing your teeth?
A: Most things will. Most toothpastes contain a detergent called sodium lauryl sulfate. This detergent temporarily alters your sense of taste by subduing your ability to taste sweetness and saltiness, while making sour foods taste bitter.

Q: Why do we have eyebrows?
A: Eyebrows are primarily there to keep water out of your eyes. Turns out your forehead perspires more than most other parts of your body. And that salty sweat would sting your eyes pretty badly without those eyebrows. They also really help out in the rain.

Q: Why do you close your eyes when you sneeze?
A: The nerves for your eyes and nose are closely connected. When sneezing it produces an involuntary reflex that closes your eyes. Also the urban myth that if you did keep your eyes open while sneezing would cause your eyes to pop out is not true.

Q: Why does running water make you want to pee?
A: That’s like a pavlovian response. Your body knows what the sound of peeing is, so running water mimicking that makes your stupid brain think it needs to pee and signals your bladder. Studies have found that this response is also found in dogs.
