Sunday Gravy with yeah right: A Viral Load…Of Pasta!

Hey Hey everyone.

We’re back on Cali time and home from our European world tour!

One of the tougher things about coming home from vacation is the transition back to normal work/life mode.

This was significantly more difficult this time since getting back to reality meant remembering that I step right back into a reality where my car is still totaled, I’m still dealing with significant pain and injuries and I’m in the middle of a settlement case with an accident attorney on my side.

It was nice to set all that shit aside even if it was just for a week.

There will be significant coverage of the most recent European excursion in the weeks to come including plenty of food experiences and food porn photos.

So much fucking cheese!

But first, it’s Gravy time.

What better way to get back in Sunday Gravy Mode than making something extremely delicious and crazy fucking easy to make?

Plus, it’s another viral food dealie.

Today’s dish was a real thing for a period on whatever sites or platforms viral things happen on.

Backstory: The baked feta and grape/cherry tomato thing is a “viral” dish created by Finnish blogger Jenni Häyrinen in 2019. “It gained massive popularity on TikTok for its simplicity: baking an 8 oz block of feta with 1-2 pints of grape or cherry tomatoes, some olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes at  400 degrees for 35-40 mins, then tossing with pasta.”

The old internet rumor bullshit mill said that this recipe got so goddamn big and “Viral-y” in Finland that the entire country ran out of feta.

I read this on the internet so you know, got to be truth, yeah?

Since we love the concept of simple, few ingredients and quick and easy, this shit felt like a natural for a Sunday Gravy episode.

Called baked feta, tomato pasta or some derivation of such we are here to attempt, sample, and describe said dish for your viewing pleasure.

Hit it!

We start with our cherry tomatoes, about 24 ounces.

Give them a quick rinse and pat them dry.

Since we’re only using a couple of ingredients today you may want to bust out a couple more shekels to buy the good feta.

Go on and kick in you cheap bastard.

During my investigation of this recipe I found the very first time it was posted. The site was in Finnish and when my phone translated here’s what I got.

Ingredient list.

And let’s get a closer look at the translated cooking instructions. This very much amused me.

I still had some leftover real Italian pasta gifted to me by friend of the blog 2 pack.

Let’s get going.

Get those tomatoes into a lubed baking dish.

Add the feta and some more oil.

I had a small leftover chunk of Boursin garlic herb cheese so I figured we could just drop it in the mix too. Add the salt, pepper and about 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flake.

Adjust to your preferred heat level.

You’ll need fresh garlic and basil to add in right after baking the tomato feta thing.

Mince them up.

While the dish cooks in a 400 degree oven for about 40 minutes, we will use this time to cook the pasta.

Forty minutes later get the dish out of the oven.

Stir, smush and squish everything around to combine.

Add pasta, the basil and garlic and toss thoroughly.

Plate up already!

Made our now traditional spinach strawberry salad with a basalmic vinaigrette to accompany.

Closer look.

Frequently when I’m trying a recipe for the first time my brain will say something like “This is really fucking interesting” but many times it will also say “There’s no way this can be bad.”

This dish is that exactly.

It’s fucking delicious. Goddamn flavor bomb it is with that salty tang from the feta and the fresh burst from the tomatoes.

That last second edition of the fresh garlic and basil really makes this fucker epic. Just the right punch of garlic and the herbal notes of the basil.

Boom motherfuckers!

This shit got famous for the right reason.

It’s fantastic. A little side salad, maybe some fresh bread or garlic bread even?

A little vino.

You just outkicked your coverage by a goddamn country mile!

Try it.

Trust me.

This will be made again.

Today’s Fun holidays include: National Pretzel Day, National Help A Horse Day, National South Dakota Day, National Richter Scale Day (as a California resident – fuck you. That shit ain’t funny), and National Audubon Day.

So Many options.

Happy Sunday everyone. We’ll slowly ease back into the regular Sunday Gravy frame of mind eventually.

Be safe and well everyone.

Until next week.

Not only are the Kings shitting the bed, but they also brained one of their fans on the way out. Good job, LA.

This wind has picked up like crazy. Really looking forward to heading outside and finding half of my laundry on the ground.

“Why don’t you use clothespins?” you’re asking. Simple, because this is Los Angeles, where a breeze above 10 mph (that’s 16 Canadians/hr) only happen during the Santa Anas.

Mr. Ayo

Talladega just became a parking lot. Damn.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Why do they even bother with regular racing they should just do this, all the time.

King Hippo

I always blast teh ghetto when this comes on in the car.

SonOfSpam

dammit where’s my pacifier

Found a funny:

People are like snowflakes. Individually small and ineffective, but if we work together we can make my step dad crash his car into a tree.

Holy shit. Bruins may as well not have showed up.

Mr. Ayo

They got a pity goal!

I know to never play cards against a guy who has the same first name as a city, and to never get romantically involved with a woman who has a tattoo of a dagger anywhere on her body, but what activities am I supposed to avoid with a woman who has the same last name as a ski resort?

SonOfSpam

That’s why I broke up with Mabel Jackson-Hole.

ballsofsteelandfury

You bang Ms. Heavenly right now!

Horatio Cornblower

Well, if her name is Sugarbush I’d put a ring on it as fast as possible.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

That’s the kind of nice girl you’d meet in Vermont. I spent most of my time in New Hampshire meeting bunny boilers like Gina Gunstock and Kathy Killington.

These teams have really picked things up – now it’s Toronto leading Cleveland 60-58 after three quarters. At this rate the winner might even break 80 points!

There was a story I was working on years and years ago where a sniper in Vietnam was about to take out a sentry but then realized he was yankin’ it, so he let him finish before firing.

As is the way of our people

Welcome back to the Western Hemisphere.

At the end of the first quarter, Cleveland leads Toronto by a score of 17 to 14. The teams have combined to go 2 for 21 from three point range.

WCS

Argos need to start pressing The Pauls defense a little more. Maybe try a few play action passes, and stop trying to test their kickers so much.

Gumbygirl

This recipe- I am confuse. Why am I putting a blanket on the goat, when it’s going in the oven? And how many oven years old do you need to be in Finland to drink the Rummo? If I spin the olive oil enough, will it turn into olive yarn? Should I use it to make the goat blanket, because that will take a long time, and you said this was a quick and easy recipe.

Doktor Zymm

On the one hand, I should go hiking since it’s nice and cool out and it’ll probably be hot and crowded for the next several months, but on the other my sleep schedule is all messed up and I don’t want to get out of bed, much less leave the house and drive somewhere where there might be people around. And there’s plenty of stuff around the house I should probably get done as well. It’s a conundrum

ballsofsteelandfury

Sleep is more important

ballsofsteelandfury

Also, have you heard about all the rattlesnake bites?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

You should sleep on it.

There you go-that’s good joking.

Holy crap 2 people ran sub-2 hour marathons at the London Marathon!

That’s ROCKINGGGG!!!

As far as I can tell, Pep thought he could beat Southampton with scrubs, realized he was wrong, and sent in the big guns to finish the job.

As Bart Simpson would say Smashy, Smashy. The sub-2 hour marathon has been accomplished.

The Buried Lede? The 2nd-place finisher also broke the barrier and it was his first marathon.

Senor Weaselo

Wait, Boston and London are the same week?

Aren’t they both considered two of the marathon majors?

Horatio Cornblower

Yep. There’s six of them: Tokyo, London, Boston, New York, Berlin, and Chicago.

Had to look it up because I forgot about Tokyo. Also there’s apparently a 7th (or more!) every year based on where one of the bigger world championship/Olympic type marathons is run.

Per ESPN there are 82 people who have run all 6 in one year, and all 82 of them need to be locked away for their own good.

Horatio Cornblower

“Excuse me, I’ve never run a marathon before; do we always run so slow?”

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Big weekend for runners, it sounds like.

In LA, you cannot even DRIVE 26 miles in 2 hours…

Horatio Cornblower

You could walk it faster, but only a nobody walks in LA.

Gumbygirl

I drove the 18 miles to my SIL’s house yesterday in about 40 minutes. On the 60 freeway! It was a record time!

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Ready for a hot take: feta sucks

scotchnaut

I mean, it doesn’t objectively suck-but for me it overpowers every other ingredient and it certainly lacks subtlety.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Oh so feta can lack subtlety but I can’t?

Don T

Sigh. You are all overpowering and cultured. Cheer up!

ballsofsteelandfury

You don’t mind pissing off the Greeks, do you?

Horatio Cornblower

What are they gonna do? Do a forced march and block the narrow passage I need to get my army through to Athens, then fend off numerous frontal attacks, dramatically reducing my military strength until one of their own betrays them, showing me a secret path to the heights above them and allowing me to slaughter them to a man with arrows?

That’s exactly what they’re going to do?

Ah. Well. Carry on then.

SonOfSpam

(also, fuck sheep…greek men fuck sheep)

BrettFavresColonoscopy

King Hippo

OF COURSE, Balls is gonna defend teh Greeks

It’s better than most other sheep’s milk cheeses. I think it’s probably sheep’s milk that sucks in comparison to other standard milks

Gumbygirl

Counterpoint: Pecorino is delicious! I love the tang.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Everyone here loves the tang
