The fucktastic shitweasels that climb Uluru.

The photograph above says it all.

I was in Alice Springs for a month when I lived in Australia, so I got to know some local Aborigines while getting shitfaced in the shitty bars there.

One night a man whose name I have forgotten told me this about the climb (paraphrasing):

“It’s worse than I can really describe. The tracks they leave are like wounds on our mother’s heart. Even if they stop I don’t know if it will ever heal.”

The thing is, Uluru isn’t naturally red. It is actually brilliant white sandstone stained by millions of years of desert winds. The Pitjanjanjanjara people were completely unaware of this until white men started defacing it, and every flake of ochre dust lost is another wound to the heart of their beliefs that will take millions more years to replace, if ever.

It’s as if a group of hostile outsiders came to (insert your holy HQ building here) and wore a foot-deep track into the wall by climbing up and down it after asking them nicely that they please not do that.

Those white tracks are a monument to ignorance, arrogance and bigotry.
