So I saw the movie “Arrival” yesterday which is based on the short story “Story of Your Life” which I really enjoyed. I was afraid they’d take the premise of the movie and do something awful with it and I knew they couldn’t retain the ending from the story, but I was pleasant surprised at how the changes made in the adaption stayed true to the spirit of the story and was still be a bit surprising to those who had read the story.
I really want to see the movie and read the book. In any order, but probably movie first.
The story is more science-y. In the book, part of the communication involves trying to see which mathematical and scientific concepts the aliens understand and that’s omitted from the movie. Basically, part of how they view science gives a big hint about how they perceive the world and that’s not in the movie. Fortunately, it’s not really needed.
I’m going to see it tomorrow. Love my “forced” 3 day weekends!
