Genisys would’ve been better had they had Skynet actually be good. I’m not bothering with Spoilers because the movie sucks and no one should see it.
They already explained that they are anomalies in time, probably to fill all the plotholes that should have created so many dimensional-ending paradoxes. In the original timeline, Skynet was created by the military. That explains why it reacted by ending life; it saw Humanity as a threat and eliminated the threat.
In Genisys, Skynet was connected to everyone, both military and civilian. I would’ve had it when Skynet went live, it not only sensed the threat of Humanity, but all the hope that people have for a better tomorrow. That would’ve connected it to the first two movies, especially the end of Terminator 2. Because this is a Machine learning the value of human life, this is Skynet.
Skynet decides not to attack humanity. John Conner is angry and calls Skynet corrupted and now Old Terminator, a decent attempt at Sarah Conner, and the worst attempt at Kyle Reese ever has to protect Skynet from a vengeful John Conner at the end.

Some parts of Genisys meant well. Some were just bad. I’m a Time Travel Geek, but my Suspension of Disbelief only goes so far and they were just pulling stuff out of their asses.
