TGISF… Quite Contrary

I’ve used that particular banner image up there for TGISF once before.  Not quite ten months ago, when talking about libraries and reading books.

But this is not about books or libraries this week.  Nope, this week we’re talking about gardening n junk.

Who’s Got Two Thumbs, Neither Of Which Are Green?

Yet even still…  even though I am by no means a gardening expert, in fact I kinda suck at it… (I’d estimate that slightly north of 50% of the plants/seeds I put in the ground die within mere weeks) …I am still strangely very protective of the plants/seeds I put in the ground.

And no, I’m not just protective of my “allegedly illegal” plants.  Allegedly.  What?????  Never mind.

But yes, it is very possible I might often chase squirrels and other little vermin out of the garden, while shaking my fist.

They rarely pay attention, however.

Well, at least not until I start throwing rocks and/or shooting around them with the pellet gun.  Which trust me, really scares the crap out of them.

Or maybe not.

I’m a Grower, not a Shower

So, what are we growing this year?  Lotsa stuff.  Have a look…

First…Broccoli.

This plant was harvested yesterday, so it doesn’t look terribly impressive here.  But wow, it’s yielded way more (and way sooner) than I ever expected this year…

Here, look…

That’s some sweet broccoli right there (and an onion and some zucchini too).  And that’s just from today.

Speaking of zucchini…

There’s gonna be some more nice zucchini and cukes later this year as best I can tell.  All of them look very healthy, unlike last year.

What else we got?  How about some peppers?

No, this pepper plant is not in jail.  It is in ICU.  This is a Habanero pepper plant.  It was doing great, better than all the rest of the pepper plants, actually.  But, it grew too fast.  It outgrew its root system.  Then last Sunday night, we had some strong thunderstorms with high winds.  Those winds grabbed this little sumbitch and uprooted him.  Pulled his little green ass right out of the ground and dropped him about 2 feet away.

I replanted him in the middle of the night that night, while the storm was still raging, actually.  Yes, I got quite wet (phrasing).

Then I put that cage around him for support and put him in ICU.  I honestly did not think he’d make it.  And he still might not.  But so far, so good.

Speaking of peppers….

Hi, I’m a Ghost Pepper who will hopefully burn Señor Weaselo’s GI tract out thru his asshole in a couple of months.

There is no way this Ghost Pepper plant should have a fruit this big yet.  But yet, it does.  Nice.

Speaking of “early fruits” (phrasing), check this out…

Those will be tomatoes soon.  They’re cute, right?

And of course, I do have some “other things” growing.

Ahem…wink wink, nudge nudge.

My first batch of weedlings this year died because I’m a bad parent.  My timing of hitting the west coast a month ago made it such that I had to decide to either let them sit in their little restrictive pots for too long and with no attention; or set them free and put them in the actual ground before they were ready for that.  I chose the latter.

They all died while I was in California.

(moment of silence)

Soooooo….. I’ve replanted.

And holy shit, if I had realized that nearly all the seeds would germinate (which seriously never happens, but it did this time) I wouldn’t have put so many in.  No shit, check this out…

Sadly, most won’t make it.  As I said, if I’d realized how potent these seeds were, I would not have put so many in so close together.  They’ll end up cannibalizing one another if I don’t “cull the herd”, so to speak.  So this weekend, I plan to terminate the weaklings.

IT’S LIKE SOPHIE’S CHOICE  UP IN HERE!!!!!

But I digress.

Anywhooooo….

If just a few make it however, that’s what I was going for anyway.  In a month or so, the ones here which survive will be ready for the actual Earthening.  But holy shit, I didn’t realize my weed seeds were this potent.  I’ve overcrowded them, admittedly.  Who knew?????

And yes, I still like flowers, too.  In a few days, these will open up and become some awesome Daylilies.  But even now, still kinda sexy in an understated phallic kinda way…right?

Eventually, they’ll look like this…

Daylily Kwanso Hemerocallis

OK, enough of that shit.  Let’s get to the sexy.

Sexy Garden Girls

If she’s cute, smart and willing to get a little dirty (that means two things), then she’s probably a keeper.

Enjoy…

Hmmmm.  I should probably stop here.  It seems there’s something unexpected coming up in my south forty. I should go tend to that.

EQUAL TIME!!!

Sexy Garden Boys!!!!!

Why yes, I DO  look just like that when I’m gardening.  Why do you ask?

Shut up, Buzz.

OK, have a great weekend everybody.

Love ya’s.

(but stay the hell outta my garden)

So we are hosting our own baby shower tomorrow (I guess others are technically putting it on — I just spend all the money on a house cleaner, sodas, and the mortgage). I don’t really have much interest in being around and now I’m tired.

I’m guessing he’s taking off and the wheels are retracting. I was just joking.

Flaps up?

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Depends on the camera angle. But prolly taking off and old planes hardly ever retract at the same time. Thought you were a pilot.

Dude owns and flies an F-4U; I’ll leave it up to him.

Maybe his will and life insurance too,

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Good point; I’d be paranoid to leave it open near the ground…. unless on the ground.

We rent, so my wife buys those boxes and gardens in raised beds. It’s cool, because you get to create whatever mix of compost and soils you prefer.
This year we have green onions, yellow onions, garlic, tomatoes, jalapeños, green bell peppers, kale, carrots, strawberries (which just end up being a sweet treat for the rabbits & deer, but that’s ok), romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and spinach in the backyard. Also, some BIG ASS sunflowers. In the front we have basil, thyme, oregano, chives, and sage.
The Shenandoah Valley is great for growers.

I normally have a halfway decent herb* garden every summer. Just didn’t get around to it this year with the rental house.

*Cooking herbs. Not quite legal to grow out in the open in MA yet.

Spanky Datass

I had a couple of slices of home grown tomato on my burger tonight. So damn good.

There was a hail storm, then I planted late, but missed the hail storm….. then the next hail storm hit, but what I planted all seems to recover, but it slowed the growth down a bit. The asshole rabbits got the broccoli before I put the fence up. The bind weeds are very healthy. Tomatoes, bell pepper, lettuce, basil, Cheyenne peppers oregano.

Those are potent seeds. They will start a kumite and it will end up being Chong Li v Dux and then, and only then will we know the winner.

Mr. Ayo

I was expecting more hoes

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Dammit, you beat me to the punch.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

This year in my garden I am growing tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, brussels sprouts, various peppers, cucumbers, green zuchinni, and…I think that’s it. There are some potatoes down there but they aren’t doing anything yet. I have cauliflower and broccoli seeds for later in the summer once it cools down. Oh, some spinach is in there too but it’s already bolting. And then of course the herbs; chives, parsely, oregano, basil (sweet and thai), mint, and some cilantro just getting started.

litre_cola

I am jealous of your “seasons”. Fuck. I plant in May, and hope for the best for everything.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

We here in the United States are doing our absolute best to make sure that the rest of the planet gets to experience nothing but summer, all the time!
