In case y’all haven’t noticed, a new decade is upon us.  Does it feel any different?  NOPE.  Has Hippo made any resolutions?  NOPE.  I made one about 11-12 years ago to stop making New Year’s Resolutions, and I fookin’ kept that one.

Do you not want to watch JV exhibitions?  CBSSN has a tripleheader, starting at 7p.  UConn and Cincy with their Murrican League opener (are either of these programs still decent/relevant?), followed by Marquette at Creigh-Creigh.  I like the new Big East, is usually a fun watch.  Up all night?  Then watch Team Secular Big Love State hoopsball invade UNLV.  Now, that’s a side that knows how to properly fall from relevance.  Runnin’ Rebs is 6-8 on the season.

I don’t believe in the NBA, and I do not understand the NHL.  Caveat emptor.

Those who DO want to watch some exhibition glory?

Oregon (+3) v. Wisconsin (Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA – 5:00, ESPN)

Don’t expect much in the way of QB play in this one (so, so glad Elway won’t draft Justin Herbert after all), but there will be pretty good slobber knocking.  Quack Attack has more in the way of speed, and I suspect that will be decisive.  Say, Ducks by 4.

Baylor (+4.5) v. Georgia (Sugar Bowl, New Orleans, LA – 8:45, ESPN)

I am of two minds about this one.  Very much believe that the Consent Abstinent will be the team happiest to be here, and motivation is often everything in JV NFL exhibitions.  But UGA has, by far, the superior, NFL-ready talent – and they are well-coached enough that I expect them to show up.  Dawgs by 10, but with a possible backdoor cover by BayBay (i.e., do not bet this match).

Watching season 2 of Castle Rock, which is creating a modernized backstory for Annie Wilkes from Misery, starring the crazy OCD Jewish girl Rafi was fucking in the later seasons of The League. It’s pretty good, dark, and much more coherent than season 1, which was a sort of random multidimension haunting thing.

4th of December was my last day at the office. Been either on sick leave or use-or-lose leave or teleworking ever since. I’ll be back on the clock tomorrow, but still from home, and will be working from home through at least 7th of February. So, in my repair and convalescence, I’ve been ably assisted by a number of friends, most notably some ex-Navy guys. One O-5, retired F-4 & F-14 RIO and just retired head of the FAA region for south and west TX district. One Command Master Chief who was in for 34 years. And finally, a guy I’ve know since we worked together in AFG/IRAQ/KUW 15 years ago. He did 12 years enlisted as a Sonar Tech (we called them “Steve Martins” for obvious reasons):comment image
and then 12 years as a ship driver (line officer) after he made chief and got a degree in nuclear physics and an officer’s commission. He retired after 24 yrs as an O-4 Lieutenant Commander.
Anyway, he’s been coming over 2 or 3 times a week to sweep up all the yard debris my dogs drag in, take out the trash, and keep me supplied with liquor. Today he brought me a bottle of his home-made whiskey in addition to my normal ration. Man, that is some good smokey tasting stuff. In my friend’s honor, I’m going to take the opportunity to honor him with a youtube post. Yer a good man, Bill, even for a fucking officer.
As a guy that only made 2nd Class Petty Officer in my four years, it’s kind of gratifying to be supported to this degree by a bunch of khaki-wearing dogs…

This being the seventh time this “new decade” shit has come up in my lifetime, I am no longer optimistic that things are going to get any better in the next one. Mad Max World here we come. I’m just glad I never spawned (at least, not that I’ve been accused of, anyway) and have no skin in the game. I feel bad for my young nephews though, and any issue of theirs that will no doubt be forthcoming at some point. Sucks to be them.
