Welcome one and all to the last football game of the year! How we got here I don’t know. Every year it’s a gotdamn blur of games, stats, dumb jokes, fantasy disappointment and open threads. And every year I drag my sorry ass back for more. Why? Because there’s nothing quite like it and you commenters make it so worthwhile with your varied shenanigans. So raise a glass to yourselves, you’re good peoples.
To The Game!
Rams/Bengals:
-In each of Cincy’s wins in the playoffs they’ve needed a turnover in the 4th quarter to get over the hump. It’s probably about that time of the game that Stafford realizes the magnitude of this tilt and complies. I really do think he’ll throw one pick.
-Most observers see this as a game that will finish at around a 51 total or so but I’d just like to point out that there are three ex-Giants cornerbacks playing in this game. Yes, Grant Haley, Eli Apple and Dont’e Deayon (more about him later) are New York castoffs. That spells great news for each team’s passing game.
-Terrible Near Symmetry: Let’s get it out of the way-the Rams finished 3rd in sacks with 50 and Burrow was the most sacked qb in the league, eating dirt 51 times. Of course Aaron Donald is a monster and Von Miller has 7 sacks in the last 7 games and then there’s Leonard Floyd and the underrated Greg Gaines, etc. If the Titans got 9 sacks, oh lord, start praying…
-Digging Into The Numbers: Since week 15-Titans game excluded-Burrow has been sacked on average 2.6 times per game. The O-line has improved but their early season struggles have warped the numbers. Will the Rams get to Burrow? Yes. But to me, the Titans game is an outlier.
-I Can’t Get It Out Of my Head: I noted during the last few games that Burrow will always take the sack and I think it’s a deliberate strategy on his part to avoid turnovers. PFF backs me up on this, noting that he as an extremely low (2.3%) number with respect to ‘turnover-worthy’ throws. If the Bengals line does struggle the Rams aren’t going to ‘wear down’ Burrow and force him into dicey throws-he just doesn’t play that way.
-The Passing Game: Just book Kupp for 100+ yards and a TD or two. As for OBJ? Yeah, he’s probably good for a TD and 90 because Eli Apple.
-The Passing Game Part Deux: As good as the Rams trio is I think Cincy’s is better. Ramsey is good of course but has been burned by top end talent-Mike Evans and Deebo had their way with him and I expect Chase will have success as well. Ramsey gives up 63% catch rate because he now follows opposing wr’s into and out of the slot (that inflates numbers) so there’s nothing special about his coverage skill metrics.
The Passing Game Part Trois: Here’s where things get interesting. If Ramsey shadows Chase then cb Darious Williams will be playing a combo of Higgins and Boyd on the outside. But if 6′ 4″, 215 pound Higgins lines up in the slot (208 times this year) he should be defended by Dont’e Deayon. The latter is listed as 5’9″, 170 but as a free agent at Giants camp he was measured as 5’5″. That is a nightmarish mismatch if Bengals OC Brian Callahan can get it to work.
-Speaking of Nightmares: Anyone recall McVay’s complete inability to change his game plan the last time he wandered into a Super Bowl? Contrast that to Zac Taylor’s halftime adjustments and the way that Burrow and Co. seem to be comfortable playing from behind.
-One More Thing: Teams favored between 4 to 5.5 points in this game sport a 1-5 W/L record when the final whistle blows.
Have a Shit Ton O’Fun in the comments. Love ya.
Props to DraftKings for casting a pretty passable avatar for Shan’Khor.
Was thinking that
And with that score, LA “fans” head for the exits to beat traffic.
[arrive home 4 hours later]
Fan: “That was great!”
There is a woman on this flight watching the Replacements but not the Super Bowl. She likes football enough to watch Keanu Reeves play it but not “the big game.”
I don’t get it. And I like that movie.
Could it be that she doesn’t know the difference?
Keanu fan not sports fan. Also neither of these teams gets knob-slobbed like Brady or Rodgers or Dallas or Pittsburgh or New England did. Both teams are invisible to casual fans
Just proves how bad The Browns are.
“Continues to prove.”
Remember when Ashley Madison had a tonne of ads in a Super Bowl. Those were simpler times.
That site caused one of my primary email addresses to get compromised like a motherfucker. To this day that email gets spam like crazy.
Alexa what is a throwaway account
OK I wouldn’t mind OBJ MVP just for the Clevelandfreude
Wrong Billie Jean, Odell.
Rammmiiitttt!
Copper Kupp got the MVNQB Award. Because dear god, what would a non-QB need to do to win MVP at this point?
Go on a late night talk show and declare that he is unvaccinated?
Stafford pulling those truffle shuffle jukes
Refs have gotten better at spotting on those slides.
So…. how many people here legit rooting for the rams?
Me!
I bet on them
Even money that that Law and Order promo was an SNL sketch joke
I have every commercial on mute, I hate Madison Avenue worse than Collinsworth, apparently
Eh I hate Collinsworth more than i hate ads but less than I hate Madison Cawthorn
I would push that guy down any mountain in the Blue Ridge
What’s the over on how many times I’ll accidentally scare my shih tzu during the game?
Careful, don’t want to end up scared shitzless
*grumble grumble* go bengals *grumble grumble*
Nice running plays, jocks.
Nice going for it on 4th down, nerd.
(There were 2 receivers WIDE open on the right. Burrow flubbed that one.)
Was it just me or was Tee Higgins wide fucking open on that fourth down?
Must have been you because I was double teamed.
Truly
Burrow didn’t see him. The rose coloured glasses restrict one’s peripheral vision.
Bold strategy, Cotton. Didn’t work this time.
Also this stadium is semi-underground, right??? Or am I seeing it weird…
I think so. Since it’s kind of in the flight path, it can only be so tall.
Oh if there’s a commercial featuring Awkwafina and a guy and some goats the guy is one of my fancy Hollywood friends. And the goats are filthy liars.
Isn’t that the junkie gal from “Euphoria?” Seashells ain’t gonna put quality heroine on the table, young lady.
It’s non red headed MJ!
Oh Dolly…why did you have to sell out?
She’s paying for college for all those Dollywood employees. Gotta come from somewhere.
Working 9 to 5G was right there!
Zendaya should be too good for that commercial.
Andre 3000 is exactly in his element.
The Johnny Hekker gif worth replaying. https://gifer.com/en/4V8N

The Rock: “I had to pay the NFL $4,000,000 to do that Super Bowl intro. As President of Northern California And Some Adjoined States, I feel it was worth it!”
May as well punted on third and 19
That was a Staffordesque first series
DOWN GOES FATTHEW!
“Duh.”
-Gravity
This Rock guy seems like he has a promising career ahead of him.
Don’t joke about that, he’ll be the GOP candidate for President someday.
You took the words right out of my mouth, dear fellow!
Not racist enough
Didn’t he praise Joe Rogan?
Apparently that’s not an impediment to a career anymore, according to some people.
Well he is already involved with a failing football league…
Did not even make it to kick off before I head to mute
Is that Fears or Crazylegs
I’m legit surprised and confused by how few TVs on this flight are set to the Super Bowl. DirecTV is in every seat and probably 25% are on the game.
Guess most tried not to fly I’d they cared that much
How dare you
That’s unamerican.
the rock looks like a prune danish
The Rock could be reading me Good Night Moon, and make it sound so epic that I’d be ready to run thru a wall.
YAY the Rock finally shut the fuck up
At last, Someone is hyping this Owl
Going fit on top grandpa on bottom
The Hype talk that no one asked for…
IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO DEY!
DO YOU SMELL WHAT THIS PROMOTIONAL CONTRACT IS COOKING FOR ME FINANCIALLY?
Hahaha
“No, not really.”
–Aaron Rodgers
Sure, I’m generally down for a Rock promo now and then
No, no, this was a fantastic idea. Too bad Ric Flair is ancient and burnt, would love to see him do something like this.
He’s kinda still in a bit of hot water after that Dark Side of the Ring episode, too…
(And I was being sincere – I’m usually down for the occasional Rock promo!)
I hate what I’ve become. I get teary eyed whenever I see Joe Burrow and I bitch endlessly about what the Jurassic Park franchise has become. I’m pretty sure this all leads to me becoming a republican in my 40s
I legitimately don’t know a single person who saw the last jurassic park movie
It was Star Trek 5 bad.
If I count as ‘know’, you do. You haven’t missed much.
The Dr. Mrs. astutely pointed out that the current climate on Earth is not particularly conducive to the survival of dinosaurs.
It’s getting there
I thought they weren’t real dinosaurs just frogs made to look like dinosaurs
How have there now been more Chris Pratt Jurassic Park movies than actual good ones?
2 > 1
Oh shit, the cold-blooded dinosaurs can survive in the snow now!
Billie Jean King was the biggest celeb you could get for the coin flip? Lose the last name and you’ve got someone even more famous! smgdh…
nancy reagan was the real bj king ppl forget that
Hahahaha
She was pretty Rocking
Billie Jean and Antonio Cromartie have a lot to discuss.
Got a beer just before the coin toss. Let’s go beers!
