Yes it is! San Diego to Seattle with sleeper cars, a dining car, and an observation car.

The Pacific Surfliner runs the same route but only as far north as San Luis Obispo and doesn’t have sleeper cars, a dining car, or an observation car. It’s a “day train.” The Coast Starlight only runs three days a week northbound, and three other days a week southbound. Both arrive in San Diego at Santa Fe Depot.

Both are fantastic rides and go right along the ocean. It’s the only way to go from Los Angeles to San Diego. This was my first northbound trip, to Santa Barbara (N on the Surfliner, S on the Starlight). They say the views on the Starlight when it goes through the Cascade Mountains are amazing.

My daughter and I are going to get a shiba inu puppy for my wife’s birthday/Mothers’ Day present because we’ve had one already and we’re gluttons for punishment. So we locate a cute one on the interwebs, and start looking into it. It turns out that the Amish counties out where the kennel is turn out to be Puppy Mill Central. Ohio is like third or fourth in the country for cruelty to animals violations, and all of the perpetrators seem to be each others’ Amish relatives. Every time I’d ask these folks a question I’d get a shadier and shadier answer. “Papers? No, but she’s a shiba inu.” “Vet visits? No, but she’s had her shots.” By the time I’m done looking into this I’m expecting to see Doggy Auschwitz out there.
