INT. RECORDING BOOTH – DAY
A massive slab of a human being sits slumped in the chair, snoring peacefully. A pair of radio station employees stand nearby, contemplating what to do. One of them holds a six-pack of beer.
PRODUCER: Are you sure this is a good idea?
STATION MANAGER: I mean, his agent said it was fine. It’s the offseason.
PRODUCER: All right, but…you do it.
He pulls a can of Bud Light Lime-A-Rita from the six-pack and hands it to the STATION MANAGER.
STATION MANAGER: Okay, here we go [he pops the tab]
PRODUCER: [gasping] Did you see that?
STATION MANAGER: See what?
PRODUCER: I swear to God, his ears just moved. Like a cat’s.
STATION MANAGER: [skeptical] You’re imagining things, man. Anyhow, his agent said to just waft it under his nose and he’ll perk right up.
The STATION MANAGER starts moving towards the sleeping figure, holding the can forward like some kind of offering…
PRODUCER: WAIT!
STATION MANAGER: [exhales roughly] What, what?
PRODUCER: He said we gotta keep these out of sight [takes the remaining cans of Lime-A-Rita and puts them into a drawer].
STATION MANAGER: Oh, yeah, good call. That could have been bad.
The STATION MANAGER resumes creeping forward. The slumbering giant’s nostrils twitch, then he slowly reaches a hand forward, fumbling open and closed until the STATION MANAGER pushes the beer into his massive paw. His eyes slowly open.
GRONK: [groggily] WAZZZUUUUUPPPPP?
PRODUCER: Rob, do you know where you are?
GRONKOWSKI: [blinking, looking around] Am I in jail?
STATION MANAGER: No…
GRONK: THEN I DON’T CARE WHERE I AM LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED YEAAAAHHHHH!!! [pounds the Bud Light]
PRODUCER: We will, we will, we just gotta get the segment started first.
STATION MANAGER: So, I don’t know if you heard…or remember hearing…but we’ve got some good news. Electronic Arts selected you for the cover of this year’s Madden.
GRONK: Sweet! Let’s celebrate!
PRODUCER: Oh, for sure. So we thought for Request Line this week…
GRONK: I WANNA ROCK! ROCK! DUH DUH NA DUH NA…[starts banging his head]
PRODUCER: …we could ask people to send in request for songs that are from, about, or inspired by video games.
GRONK: Aw, sweet, I LOVE video games.
STATION MANAGER: Great! So, just introduce the segment…
GRONK: …and then party?
STATION MANAGER: Absolutely. Just give us a second to get rolling…
GRONK: [blinking, glancing around the room distractedly]
PRODUCER: Rob?
GRONK: Sorry, man, gotta go!
GRONK leaps up from the chair, lowers his shoulder, and crashes through the studio wall, leaving behind a gigantic hole. The PRODUCER and STATION MANAGER lean through the hole and look out in to the morning sunlight, where they see GRONK sprinting away in hot pursuit of a Budweiser delivery truck.

Welp, you heard it, folks. Songs from, about, and “inspired by” video games. I’ll get you started with a carryover from the old KSK days:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhwDxNqWtxk
I think Time Splitters 2 is the best GoldenEye clone to ever be made. Between the ridiculous number of characters, eras, weapons and challenges, that game is nearly endless, and fun as hell with a friend. It’s too bad that Edios backed off and let EA dig their claws into the 3rd one, effectively killing the franchise. I still want 4, damnit!
Here’s the main theme, which makes me want to go rev up a minigun!
While often confused for a Minibosses song, this version of Big Blue was actually done by Nintendo for a standalone soundtrack.
And speaking of GTA…Danzig’s “Mother” was in GTA: San Andreas, if memory serves.
https://youtu.be/8Gw5pyjBYmQ
Also on Radio X:
Rusty Cage – Soundgarden
Hellraiser – Ozzy
Fuck! Unsung is on there too!
San Andreas’ Radio X has to be the best GTA station, followed closely by V Rock from Vice City.
Love that intro to Rusty Cage. Someday we’ll do a Request Line with “intros” as the subject. And maybe include “outros” or do a separate one for that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fv5cuYZFC0
/might need to upgrade video game platforms
Mine don’t fit the theme, but before we had video games we listened to the radio…. and played pool.

I actually got made fun of last night for playing tetris.
I never wanted to kill so many millennials in one moment before. And that’s saying something.
Disclaimer: I was playing on my phone waiting for my niece’s graduation to start.
There were about 5,000+ millennials in the building at the time, so I was already mostly in homicidal mode.
For Tetris? The most timeless game ever? Would they rather be playing whatever piece of crap free-mium game that came out last week?
Short answer: Candy Crush is King
The candy part reminds them to appreciate the sweetness of life; the crush part reminds them of what’s going to happen to all of their hopes and dreams.
Another GTA throwback. I think it was in Vice City where you had a mission in which you flew a toy helicopter around a parking garage to plant explosives. You only had a few minutes to plant like 5 bombs and the mission was hard as shit to complete. The time that I did complete it, this was on the radio.
I’m not sure how they put a radio into a remote controlled helicopter but what the fuck.
The payoff when the building exploded was fucking epic.
That was Vice City…loved that game. I somehow got phenomenally good at flying that little ‘copter…I could do that mission with minutes to spare, and then just fly it around for fun before blowing up the building. Probably my favorite of the single-player GTA games.
I AM Tommy Vercetti.
Memory serves, you’re in a van controlling the toy chopper, which has a radio. I’m also pretty sure that mission is called “Demolition Man,” which is a “very” different tune…
Who Made Who – AC DC
An oldie… Hammerbox’s “Trip” from one of the old Road Rash games.

Oh man, that takes me back…
HAPPY FUCKING SEXY FRIDAY PEEPS!

Clutch is one of my favorite bands, but I had never heard of them prior to 2009. I will be forever grateful to Valve’s marketing team for using “Electric Worry” as the background theme for Left 4 Dead 2’s commercial. Incidentally, it is still one of my favorite games ever.
Another song that’s actually in the game.

Pet Shop Boys – Always On My Mind

Free form jazz odyssey to Smash Brothers?
Free form jazz odyssey to Smash Brothers.
Robbing stores and shooting down police helicopters as Trevor with this on the radio.
What I enjoyed most during GTA San Andreas was cruising through the hood, blasting busters and cranking this on the radio.
This is the intro for Duke Nukem Land of Babes and one of my favorite bands, Static-x.
Win win!
No request line for me today. Leaving shortly for Old 97’s and Heartless Bastards in Boston tonight.
Anyone in the Boston area that can find their way to the Royale and yell “DFO rules, UPROXX drools” will get free beers from me.
Drools…not sure whether to make a Trent Green joke or go with Jim Kelly.
Also, there’s no way you can make some argument about how “Time Bomb” is actually an ode to Mega Man or something?
It’s a good thing you are getting out of town tonight. Your locker is going to be awful crowded.

“All right. It’s Saturday night, I have no date, a two-liter bottle of Shasta and my all-Rush mix-tape… Let’s rock.”
Their first album was pretty damn unstoppable.
Steve Walsh – Space Age Whiz Kids

Yet to know anybody who likes this song.
Some You Tube Puerto Ricans – Super Mario Bros. Theme (originally for cuatro by Pedro Guzmán)

Ha! Didn’t know that was a thing.
I should give South Park a break. Family Guy NEVER!
GTA San Andreas. Toots and the Maytals – Pressure Drop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRSwjhYmAY4
In my opinion, the granddaddy of all video game trailers.
/also a big achievement for me when I unlocked it in Guitar Hero
Last one from THPS2 – Lagwagon – May 16
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzYOA4-xNaA
I’ll branch out in a minute, but a few more THPS2 – Guerrilla Radio – RATM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZul_mSFczs
Now that I’m on a video game trailers kick, here’s a DOUBLE SHOT from Gears of War:
The original version of Mad World – Tears for Fears
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFsHSHE-iJQ
Although the Gary Jules version is pretty cool too.
Basically the whole Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack. But this was my favorite. Millencolin – No Cigar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OChjVLHlkVE
Yup, that’s exactly what I had planned to post next from that glorious game.
The music from that crazy Memento-style trailer for Dead Island:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CzcOcBb_ms
“My Console” from Eiffel 65. They mention different video games in it you guys!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeOSWLGKuaE
“Human Video Game” from an obscure act called DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45M0cz-9Nvs
Well it has an 8 bit character in the video so, I am going to rule this is eligible.
Dire Straits- Money For Nothing
https://youtu.be/lAD6Obi7Cag
Fine, here’s one more 35 year old song called “Video Games” – this time from Ronnie James.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45M0cz-9Nvs
10 minutes of Pitfall noises? 10 minutes of Pitfall noises!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhXMYw1lXY0
I feel like Jimmy Eat World or Ash must have done a tribute song to classic video games but nothing is coming to mind.
Another Pro Skater 2 favorite. I remember crashing many a time to this song.
Dub Pistols – Cyclone
https://youtu.be/y5LbvhhCgvg
What, you want another early-80s song called “Video Games” from an act called Fingers? Don’t say I never gave ya nothin:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkD64FWrkrE
This is pretty great.
The 8-bit noises at the beginning are enough for me to shoehorn this one in, because this video is wonderfully insane.
THIS IS MY JAM, YO!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhscMsBhNhw
/hasn’t played video games since 1989
//fucking nerds
Early music video from The Toons. It’s callled “Video Games” and it’s wonderful/awful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwjuPM1MEgQ
I’ve pimped the modern trailer for “The Last Starfighter” before; here’s the music they used for it.
Weird Al parodying “Taxman” with (of course) “Pac-Man”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=941ssF8yIr8
Remember the Journey video game console at the arcade/pizza joint? Yeah, me too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LatorN4P9aA
Triforce Quartet- Legend of Zelda Medley
https://youtu.be/lN2WxDmoXvA
Huh. I had assumed Henry Rollins’ “Liar” was inspired by Duke Nukem Forever, but apparently the song predates the game’s announcement. Who knew?
https://youtu.be/awY1MRlMKMc
Gonna be a few from this one:
“Inspired by”? What the hell kind of “sell more records by creating a tenuous connection to a movie” crap is that?
/but seriously, I really enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. The World on a visual level.
Let’s get something obvious out of the way…
https://youtu.be/XY_ESTnBlS0
