It might not feel like it (it was in the lower 90s here today, for example) but today is the first day of Autumn.

Autumn is a pretty neat time of year.  I think so, at least.

Days begin to shorten.  The heat of summer is mostly past and the nights become cooler.  Leaves start changing colors (and also falling into the damned yard grumble grumble)….

Oh relax, it’s not about my sex life or any pending legal charges.  Heh, fool me once…right?

No this is just a stupid little thing.  But I often think about it this time of year for some reason.

Several years ago, more years than I’d like to count at this point quite frankly, I became very good friends with a cowboy…

He was a classmate of mine in Veterinary School.  We became friends and he taught me now to rope steer and ride bulls.  Shit, that doesn’t make it sound better, does it?

My cowboy friend (lol) taught be how to tend my rope, take down calves/steer, and ride a bull all day long.

I actually got pretty good for a while.  Not rodeo circuit good like he was…nooooo.  I’d have gotten my arse killt trying that shit.  It’s not as easy as it looks, and it doesn’t look terribly easy…

But I could show up onto a ranch (and did more than once) and out-cowboy all the wannabe cowboys who were employed there and who thought they were the shit.  It was fun for a while until it got boring.

And in an interesting turn of events, it’s how I ended up coming together with a very special person in my life, many years ago.  In fact, she’s the little surfer chick I mentioned last week here.

Ah, it comes full circle.  I love it.

Sports For The Melancholy

Week Three of TNF brought us the juggernaut that was the LA Rams at the San Francisco Giants.  Errrrr, Forty-Niners….sorry.  So we were all expecting it to be a really good game, AMIRITE???

(go ahead, I’ll wait ’til you’re done laughing)

But the thing is, this really did turn out to be a good damned game.  Holy shit.  Goff and Gurley did a lot of goods for Rammit; Hoyer managed to hang in there for the Giants…  errrrr Niners and spread the ball around to the tune of 332 yards and 2 TDs.  In all seriousness, for a TNF game, and considering the matchup?  This was a very pleasant surprise, I must say.

The rest of the league gets going early Sunday morning, when the Jaguras and the Ratbirds face off in London.  9:30amEDT for that one, btw.  I’ll need to be drunk early.

Sunday/Monday Schedule

Meh.  Cleveland’s streak is over, but they’ve started another one.  They keep playing like this and they’ll steamroll the playoffs.  The only real questions left to answer in the AL (before the playoffs, that is) is can the Yanks overtake the Bosox and can the Twinkies hang on to the 2nd wildcard slot?  The likely answers are “no” and “yes”, respectively.

The Dodgers are limping to the finish line and will set no records, but will still take the division flag this weekend barring a miracle.  Thus making the NL even more boring than the AL.  Only thing really still in question in the NL is can either Milwaukee or St. Louis catch a little fire down the stretch and slide past Colorado for the 2nd wildcard slot there.  I’m going to go out on a limb and say that St. Louis WILL slide past Colorado for that 2nd wildcard, btw.  Given the way the schedule plays out (STL hosts MIL to close things out against one another next weekend, and COL closes things out at home vs LAD) I like the Cards’ chances.

We shall see.
