Your “Different From Every Other Sport” Sunday Evening Open Thread

When I was a kid, my parents let me get comedy records from the public library. For a suburban Canadian public library in the 1970s, you had the usual standard fare:

  • Allan Sherman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jjiWS__Mp0

  • Bill Cosby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5jKKN5v6yA

  • Bob Newhart

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y9xnj0zj3A

  • Peter Sellers / The Goon Show

and, because Canada, Wayne & Shuster.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow5MqFywqSI

As you can see, there was something very homogeneous about the offering. There was no hint of a Lenny Bruce or a Richard Pryor, let alone a Steve Martin or Freddie Prinze. But somehow, there was George Carlin.

and for that, I am thankful.

Memory served that they carried his old, 1960s material, when he had the short hair & suits that would get him regular TV appearances,

and so they kept bringing in his records during the 70s, when he wasn’t so clean-cut anymore but there was still a market for checking out his material.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A96KD3PjaHg

And we even got to catch the classics.

It got to the point that shows like SCTV would parody his efforts.

I don’t have an original George Carlin story, but given that he’s been gone 11 years I wanted to use tonight’s Beerguy Flashback to touch on one of the first experiences with comedy that impressed & impressed upon me. It’s hardly original, but I think that’s kinda the point.

Saw these maniacs open for The Reverend Horton Heat Friday night. Unbelievable show, and I think I’m now an honorary member of a Mexican gang.

Have I mentioned how much I love Cine Latino?

DonT briefly mentions the film Little Murders down below. It is one of my favorite movies of all time.

It was a New York stage play featuring all of the main actors before it was a movie so all their performances are extremely well developed. Written by Jules Feiffer, each main character has a big monologue somewhere in the film and they’re all great.

Here’s Donald Sutherland as the counter-culture Reverend during the wedding scene. He would take this character with him to his next film, Kelly’s Heroes. Here’s the original “Oddball” before he got drafted:

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

I think I saw that way back when in some other state of mind. Anyway; what a fucking great cast.

Eliot Gould, Marcia Rodman, Vincent Gardenia, Alan Arkin, Donald Sutherland, Lou Jacobi

Directed by Alan Arkin
Photgraphed by Gordon Willis (pre-Godfather when he was a New York commercial DP)

“It’s an answer!” I still think of that.

If you can find it, this is a great show:

I often complain about the Dr. Mrs. Deadly, Esquire’s lack of situational awareness, but today featured a new high. We were walking along the sidewalk and about fifty feet in front of us, a bum dropped trou and started shitting (or maybe pissing) right there. I, of course, stopped short and started looking for alternate routes. My beloved…well, let’s just say she wasn’t gonna let some disgusting human waste disrupt her morning stroll.

THAT BUM, I CALL HIM RICK SANCHEZ BECAUSE HE WAS GETTING SCHWIFTY!

My pitch for the virtual reality version: Months of Nothing – a True Detective Experience.

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

Millennials will love it; it so closely matches their lifestyle.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Are “millennials” the new “hipsters”?

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

They can be two things.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

I like it, to each their own.

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

Hey, the Fleet did that thing with the winning. How about that?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I am very flatulent

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

Yes, I’ve sat next to you.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Would quit with the fucking bragging. We are well aware of these accomplishments.

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

I was going to go to the Fleet game tonight, but a bunch of people bailed because of the rain. Been watching little bits online here: https://aaf.com/

I’ve gotta say, it’s a little weird watching the game not with the sideline view, but I’m kinda digging it.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Unis of Atlanta and San Diego teams are too close in color to each other. Maybe I should find my glasses.

Viva La Tabula Raza

My dad hated George Carlin when I was into him in the 70s. He was still serving as a USAF officer and I think that shaded his opinion, though I couldn’t figure out why he dug Tom Lehrer, because Lehrer was of the same philosophy as Carlin, in my mind.. After the old man retired in his 40s (around 1980), and started smoking weed, he started to appreciate Carlin, to the point of even buying his books. I managed to convince him to stop his lifelong Republican voting in about 1990, and although at his current age of 82 he has laid off the weed over the last few years, he will occasionally bust out a Carlin quote. And hates the Republicans with the heat of a thousand supernovae.

litre_cola

How is the National Emergency? Have you been overrun yet?

Viva La Tabula Raza

I’ve got a contractor coming to bid on building some watchtowers at the corners of my property. With machine guns. Unfortunately, the only personnel I can afford to pay to man them are undocumented immigrants from down at the Home Depot parking lot, who will work for 10 bucks a day, a can of refried beans, and a 12-pack of store-bought tortillas.

Now watch this drive.

Good for him; let’s pour a drink in his honor.

Cynthia Frelund is smart sexy.

Col. Duke LaCross

Dream woman.

Fronkenshteen

Favorite Carlin line: “Oh sure I’ll tell you about god, Jesus…First of all, he can do anything; he can throw a boat right over a hedge. So power, ya got.”

WCS

I don’t get NFL Network at home, and sure as shit am not adding another $35 per month for the subscription service, but, I’m at my parents’ house right now, and they have it. This AAF thing hasn’t been terrible.

Fronkenshteen

Right? Methadone!

Don T

I took out videos from the Albany, NY Public Library when I lived there in the 90s. Took out an Elliot Gould & Donald Sutherland flick: “Little Murders”. Disturbing film. Never seen anything like it.

Don T

Point is: I loved it and public libraries are the shit. Anachronic AF, but still!

Brick Meathook

Don’t ever think libraries and printed books are anachronistic. Digital libraries can be changed; history can be re-written. Beware of that.

Wakezilla

Ice football fans: What the fuck is wrong with Patrik Laine? My working theory is that he has a crippling Fortnite addiction. Once he stopped scoring mid-December, he turned to Fortnite and now he’s in too deep.

Is there a way to find out how much other gamers play Fortnite? I’m pissed off because he’s torpedoing my icefootball pool

litre_cola

This is a restricted free agency year so he should be killing it. There’s no way he will sign a long term deal but especially now he will just sign a bridge deal like Trouba and Morrissey did. They need a 2nd line centre to play with Ehlers and Laine like Stastny did when added last year. This then pushes Brian Little to the 3rd line and Adam Lowry to the 4th which makes them far more dangerous.
Basically defenses have adjusted and Little is not a good distributor of the puck thus Laine is not playing well. It sure as hell isn’t the nightlife in Winnipeg.

Col. Duke LaCross

Rescue dog show!

Georgie the Corgi!

Philly-Detroit feed keeps freezing and just crapped out and took me back to a random point in the first period. I haven’t seen a stream this messed up since the DuPont superfund site.

Carter Hart is causing a glitch in the Matrix

Gratliff

The only hopes of the Flyers making the ‘yoffs is the Canadiens’ heroic failure

litre_cola

I think it is going to happen. There back end is weak. I injury and their ship is sunk.

Wakezilla

As a Habs fan, I can tell you that I hope the Habs miss the playoffs. Them getting their shit pushed in by Tampa isn’t as exciting to me as them winning the draft lottery and getting a top 5 pick. They’re in the middle of a rebuild and a playoff spot will set them back a year

litre_cola

Makes perfect sense. T.B is a machine.

Giving the first women’s tag titles in an elimination chamber match and all anyone can notice is the 2 inch thick gym mats on the outer area they started putting in because they noticed people just sort of died when they fell on the steel bars

Redshirt

At this rate, I think the Vegas now has the Pace Truck to win this thing at 30-to-1 odds.

yeah right

I saw George Carlin live twice, once in San Diego and another time in Davenport Iowa. Top notch both times.

yeah right

I’ve also seen Gallagher, Cheech and Chong, Richard Jeni- just a couple of months before his suicide – and many others. Seeing a good live stand up show can be dicey but I’ve been lucky and caught some good ones.

Gratliff

I had a chance to see him. He cancelled the show at the last second, then died a week later. Very rude of him imo

SonOfSpam

Got to see him once about 25 years ago, also saw Jeni, and a pre-famous Daniel Tosh. But the funniest I ever saw live was Brian Regan. And he doesn’t even work blue!

Brick Meathook

I stood in line behind George Carlin at a Starbucks once.

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

I got to see George twice, both out at the Pala Indian Casino. The first time was his first live show after getting out of rehab,, and it is one of the best things I’ve ever witnessed.

Redshirt

I didn’t know the 2019 Daytona 500 was an Elimination Match.

Mr. Ayo

I hope they tow the winner over the finish line.

The last 10 laps are taking longer than the first 190.

You would think having a muzzle would make it hard to use a scope.

Redshirt

Plus no opposable thumbs. That’s impressive.

nomonkeyfun

That’s why he has a muzzle break.

ArmedandHammered

I made the mistake of buying “They Are Billions”. It will be a close race between losing my job or getting a divorce to make me enter gaming rehab, if it actually exists.

Gratliff

Carter Hart is so good right now. Absolutely gonna regress next season, get traded next Summer, and win 4 Vezinas in Columbus

litre_cola

At least you are a realist. You will probably sign the Jets Brassoit and he will regress to how he was in Edmonton and Calgary.

ballsofsteelandfury

Woke up from a nap to catch the wreck with ten to go. At least my favourite driver wasn’t in it.

Redshirt

Driver: “Why am I still racing?! I’m freaking running 22nd with 10 laps to go. There’s no way I can win unless a third of the field decides to crash.”
Spotter: “Go low! A third of the field decided to crash.”
Driver: “YES!”

SonOfSpam

Minnie?

herodotus450

Probably phillips.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I like drinking good booze on trains. Makes me feel like a fancy hobo.

ballsofsteelandfury

What train are you on?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Not the midnight train to Georgia

BrettFavresColonoscopy

LIRR. But had a nostalgic moment about a time on the metra in Chicago when we were passing around a bottle of lagavulin 16 and swigging out of it. The fanciest of hobos.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Hobo High Life FTW!

Gratliff

Was hoping the Cosby clip was just gonna be someone passing out

litre_cola

I for one have never seen Darren Sharper and Bill Cosby in the same place

herodotus450

“Carter Hart squatting between two pipes” has a different meaning when I switch over to NBC
