TGIF! Long weekend ahead and it’s Friday, so I’m going to make this short and sweet.
Survival – Personal Edition
Let’s imagine future you next winter is stuck on a snowy mountain and need shelter. Let’s build a trench!
- Plan the trench. Make sure the opening to at a right angle to the wind. We’re not building a wind tunnel here Also, the trench needs to be just wide and long enough to accommodate you while lying down. It should deep enough that the sides are just a tad taller than you.
- The opening should be wider and flatter than taper at to the other end. Your head will be the one near the opening. Use a shovel or other flat tools (cooking pan, wide stick) to dig the trench.
- Cover the trench with branches then a tarp then a light layer of snow. Use a backpack or anther solid object as the door at the opening. It needs to block most of the wind while still providing ventilation.
Alternately, if you’re on the side of the mountain with no flat areas, you can build a snow cave.
- Find an area with a large snowdrift with deep snow. If possible, plan the opening to be at a right angle to the wind.
- Dig a narrow tunnel into the slope at a slightly upward angle. A few feet into the tunnel, dig out a flat cavern. The cavern needs to be long and wide enough to lie down in without touching the sides.
- Make the roof of the cavern into a dome shape. This will prevent it from collapsing on you. Also, make sure you are far enough from the surface to keep it from collapsing. You’ll need at least one foot.
- Add a hole from the roof to the surface for ventilation.
That should buy you some much needed comfort and time while stuck on the mountain. Good luck!
