The Dutch ladies currently ranked 9 th in FIFA world standings are in Group E along with the USA (1), Portugal (21) and Vietnam (32). They begin group play with Portugal on 23 July, followed by the USA 27 July and finishing up with Vietnam on 1 August. Going strictly by the rankings, if they avoid any upsets they should advance to the knockout stage, and might just give the USA a good run at it in the group play.
The team has 3 WWC appearances with their best finish in 2019 as runners-up to the US team Mid Fielder Sherida Spitse is the squad’s captain. She plays for Ajax professionally and has 44 goals in international play to her credit.
Consensus is that the poor showing in last years European championship, after winning it in 2017, may be the motivation this strong side needs to exceed expectations this time around. If they beat or draw with the US team in group play I would not count them out.
Not knowing enough about the topic to offer an informed prediction, I will say this. The Orange can go deep into a tournament, they have before and recently. Being 9 th ranked takes a lot of pressure off, people do not expect much. They look like a fun and loose bunch, I like their odds.
They look to be one of the best things going on in Holland. As opposed to Amsterdam airport. That place. I hate it. I’m now taking options to connect in Charles De Gaulle (no chit!) rather than revisit that goat rope that lost my luggage the last three times I passes through. But I digress…
Go get ‘em Orange Chicks!
