TGIF! The madness continues, and the brackets are all broken (Hopefully not yours, of course), but it’s still good Friday. Onward to the weekend!
Survival – Personal Edition
It’s spring time, which means it’s time to get into swimsuit shape. Now some of you may go a little overboard on this and find yourself with a tidy little gym addiction. Let’s get that treated.
- Start by examining your behavioUr. An honest self assessment is crucial to start recovery.
- Are you working out multiple times a day?
- Find yourself going to the gym even though you know it’s closed?
- Are you regularly confused as a gym employee?
- Do you lie to friends or family about the amount of time you spend at the gym?
- Is some gym equipment dedicated to only you?
- Are you constantly exceeding the time limit on the treadmill?
- How do you feel about the gym closing for a holiday?
- If you answered a lot of yeses to those questions, you have an issue. However, you have to admit to yourself that you have a problem and that you need help. Recognize you are not responsible for your addiction, buy you are responsible for your recovery.
- Share your problem with one other person. And no, this person cannot be someone that goes to or works at the gym.
- Wean yourself off the gym by spending less time there. Instead of that gym session, read a book, go to the movies, even take a nap. You want activities that do not involve exercise.
- As with breaking any addiction, there is a strong likelihood of a relapse. Be prepared to forgive yourself and then reach out to others for additional support.
- Get as much help as you need. Talk to a therapist, join a support group, or create one if there isn’t one.
- And remember, working out at home instead of the gym is only a further sign of addiction and not the road to recovery.
