Greetings to you all, but this week especially to those of us of a certain age, specifically those of us who had our formative years in the ’80’s. It was a strange time in America, one where Ronald Reagan had us on the road to the absolutely fantastic, 10/10, no notes paradise that we enjoy as a universally beloved country today.
-Ahem-
It was also a golden age for films that celebrated youthful hijinks in the service of sticking it the The Man, whether that man be the dance-hating minister father of the object of your desires, the tyrannical owner of the local strip club, or anyone who was against doing things like taking advantage of girls and/or women for the purposes of one’s own sexual gratification.
Wait, what?
/reads notes
Yep, read that correctly.
Anyway, this week’s topics, (which for legal purposes can be blamed on our own Rikki-Tikki-Deadly), is 80’s Sex Farces. In order to embiggen the category for purposes of draft participation throughout the day I will allow movies that were made outside of the 1980’s so long as they otherwise represent the 80’s Sex Farce. What does this mean.
It’s got to primarily involve young people, high school or early college. The plot has to revolve around a quest for something forbidden, which in most cases is going to involve losing one’s virginity, but I’ll be broad-minded on this so long as these is some sort of “quest” involved. The movie must be a comedy, at least in theory. Most important, even the movie in question has been made much more recently, (think the ‘American Pie’ franchise), it has to be the kind of movie where if you think about what you’re seeing for than like two seconds there are significant parts that really aren’t that goddamn funny, even as they’re played for laughs.
This is RTD’s topic so I’d give him the first pick, but somehow I got booted from the backchannel, (‘Booted From The BackChannel’ would be a great name for an 80’s sex farce!), and I can’t DM him to let him know. Hope he gets here in time to take whatever pick he had in mind, as I did just double-back and check and he did not list one for this topic. What a (non-sexual) 20’s style farce, amirite!? Classic Rikki!
Anyway, with the first pick I will take the movie that arguably started it all, even if it is all the way back in 1978, ‘Animal House.’ Comedy? Check. Revolves around young people? Check. Involves a quest? Check and check, in that Delta Tau Chi has to band together to defeat the evil Dean, (a trope so beaten to death that The Simpsons would later make fun of it), and Otter needs to get laid for the first time. And Otter later does this with a girl of 14, which is just one of several instances where you don’t want to put too much thought into the real-life ramifications of what you’re watching.
Also ‘Animal House’ is hilarious.
The rest of you are on the clock.
Side Note: I have a client meeting in the morning and a deposition in the afternoon and will have limited participation. I therefore appoint RTD commissioner of this draft, as this was his idea and because I am sure I can trust him not to become drunk with power.
