TGIF! There’s only one (1) playoff ice ball game tonight? We better get multiple OTs as recompense.
Survival – Personal Edition
Let’s learn how to get shot by a gun. In this scenario, you’re somehow in the line of fire and not at all at fault for causing this gun fight.
- Face the shooter. Getting shot in the back or base of your skull will be fatal.
- Lower yourself. This will make you a smaller target and also allow you to protect your most important bits like your face, neck and torso.
- Sit on the ground. Bend your knees with your legs in front of you. This will allow your lower legs and upper legs to protect your torso. Also, if your back is near a wall make sure to keep separation with your back. Bullets will bounce or drag on the wall causing you further injury if you’re touching the wall.
- Put your elbows together behind your legs and cover your face with your forearms.
- Put your hands together and hold them just an inch or two in front of you. This will allow them to better absorb the impact of the bullet.
- Now wait to get shot. You’ll feel a punch sensation, or if the caliber is small enough you may not feel it all at first.
- Figure out where you were shot. Hint: look for blood. Ideally the wound will be in the hands, feet, forearms, or lower legs. Shots in these areas are rarely fatal if the bleeding is controlled.
- So, yeah, now control the bleeding. Use pressure on the wound to slow or stop the bleeding. If that doesn’t work and the injury is on a limb, your last resort is to apply a tourniquet above the wound. Never leave a tourniquet in place for more than a few minutes unless you’re going to bleed out. This is a last resort because this can very easily cause the loss of that limb.
- Get help from the pros.
Now you’ll have a fancy gunshot scar and scary story to tell everyone how cool you are.
