So, in looking through my youtube feed yesterday, I came across a clip that detailed the Ukrainian stealth drone carriers that were used to destroy Russian aircraft while at their bases thousands of kilometers from Ukraine. My first thought was “Is this real?”, which was even my wife’s comment when I mentioned it to her, followed by her admonishing me not to bother her as she is trying to finish her book (a courtesy that is never returned). It turns out it was actual footage and that the report was true. But to me, it brings up the fact that my first reaction to any news, no matter the source – internet, print, televised, or major media outlets, I immediately doubt the veracity of what I am seeing and hearing. I had to wait for several sources to report the attack in Colorado before I believed it, and that was from CNN!
I have no idea if Walter Cronkite actually was telling the truth when he reported, but you know what, I fucking believed what he said. Because of who he was and the reputation he had built. Anymore, I can’t even trust the reputation or the credentials of experts or witnesses, because who knows how the media was manipulated, from one sided reporting, blind refusal to see evidence in front of them, or using AI to fake a video clip or alter one. It seems the faster we can get our news the less likely it is to being remotely correct. Instead of the time being available before publishing or going live where facts could be established, multiple eyewitnesses accounts could be brought together into a coherent narrative, and just time for the info to settle a bit, we have get it out there now and make sure it fits our narrative. At least I am able to do quite a bit of critical thinking and do the research if possible. Trust but verify not longer applies to any media for me, it is all verify, never trust.
Anyway, not sure what is on tonight but I am going to try and finish up Mob Land, which has been fantastic so far.
One other thing about the Ukrainian attack – I really, really wanted to geek out over it with my friends like I used to over things. You know, where you just sit and bullshit about what ever your group finds interesting. Comment section works well, but sometimes you just need to be together and talking over each other. Makes me realize I need to get out more and get some local friends as mine are dead, traveling, or grown too far apart to really relax in each others presence. I love my wife, but someone to discuss Space:1999 and it’s design esthetic, she is not.
So what news outlets are are you using to get correct info? And do you think the Eagle Transporter is one of the coolest space ships ever? Don’t even talk to me about the Hawk Interceptor variant, sullying a beautiful design just to add weapons.
I’ve been raging all day about the steel tariffs doubling just overnight which is super bullshit considering no one is acting like there is any national emergency — just surging steel monopoly stock prices — and that, if we all just admit we’re ramming cash into the Treasury so we can cut tax rates for the wealthy in 6 months, then I NEED to be buying from my import vendors.
Consider that everyone’s prices just went up exactly 25% (in theory). Buying import steel means feeding the Treasury, which important because the government is going to get dollars in there, regardless of what you buy.
While buying from domestic sources (who are typically owned by a foreign group that just set up a shop in the US) means taking that money that could have gone to the US Treasury for redistribution and, instead, gifting it to whatever foreign group or NYSE corp windfall profits.
Frankly, it’s unAmerican to buy American made steel in the next 6 months. This nation needs taxes in the Treasury more than it needs more handouts to the American Steel Monopoly for their elite east coast stock holders.
I say all facetiously.
Anyways, then I put pencil to paper in Excel here and, as much as I want to curse my domestic suppliers for being greedy faux-war profiteers (these pussies fucking stood for national security by increasing their prices because, gee golly, who else would dare call out the lie that steel is getting fucking raped because “national security” has already been established as language that allows the President to do anything according to this Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court, it’s not like a wildly different amount in the price and I guess I’m just paying them for the convenience of them being local. But save the fucking “anything American” bullshit. You all are AB/InBev — just wolves in sheeps clothing.
But still, fuck these drones with a long piece of their shitty American-Made By Dumb People Who Are So So Scquared Of The Dark Skin Men with PRIDE #ALLBUCKSMATTER!
Fucking high tax, big government republicans. Pretty sure it’s time to reconsider the term “The Greatest Generation” considering they were the horrible fucking parents who raised shit boomer generation that has literally sucked the life out of the nation like a cancer — which is exactly what they are.
So yeah — really fucking antsy this evening big time. Anyone take FUBAR in the draft this morning?
Friggin’ shitshow here tonight… bad batch of dope in the area it seems.
Far too many OD’s in this short of time, so bad drugs is always my first theory.
OD, DNR, so many acronyms whose phones failed to ring on draft day…
FUBAR
Found a funny:
ERNEST HEMINGWAY: for sale: baby shoes, never worn
SHOE STORE MANAGER: *pulls him aside* the “for sale” and “never worn” parts are implied, Ernest
BIG Padres vs Giants series in SF starts tonight! ⚾️

Speaking of journalism, this headline caused a great deal of panic among dyslexic Celtics fans.

I’ll give ten whole US cents to whoever wants to stop by the PSAP and Nancy Kerrigan me.
At least then, I wouldn’t have to wait another week for the MRI to show what I already know, and we can start the process of whatever to try to fix that will inevitably not really do much.
You broke your dick?
Don’t you already scream out “WHYYYY?” when you’re getting nailed?
Got to follow protocol… =$
I’m still LOLing about that FUBAR draft this AM. We were like a bunch of Jerry’s kids, all hopped up on MDMA. SMGDH.
Wish i coulda been there. Didn’t see this classic:
I believe Joe Bob Briggs used to wax eloquent about the Fort worth Area Rapid Transit…
In the far reaches of the school district Gumby and I grew up in was an area called Stahlstown. That’s because everybody there had the last name Stahl. They were… Hapsburgy. The joke was that they all went to their own college after graduation. Stahlstown Higher Institute of Technology.
Goddamn that cuts. Very very funny joke.
Probably also responsible for like 0.0000185% of america’s school shooting pandemic.
I reference this scene at work almost every day…
A thoughtful piece here Sir, thanks. Having been directly involved in events that are then reported very inaccuratly, I’ve been sceptical of news reporting for years. You are correct, first reports are frequently less accurate. Use multiple sources and avoid being in a bubble. Listen to both sides because sadly that is where we are it seems.
One side is completely nuts. Trump thinks Biden was a robot clone, for fuck’s sake.
With everything coming to light, not to sure he wasn’t.
Our problem is that both sides think that of each other to a large degree. The truth is always somewhere in the middle.
The truth has a decidedly leftward lean at the moment.
Am watching Top Chef and they are in Calgary/nearby mountains. The editing is horrible.
Bummer that they finally film nearby and Padma isn’t there for you to stalk
Yeah but Kish.
She’s too androgynous for me. Gail Simmons, now there’s a woman.
This guy gets it*
*blisters from jerkin it
This season has been disappointing in terms of the setting. They’re calling it “Top Chef: Destination Canada” but it’s basically been Top Chef Toronto, with two episodes in Calgary/Canmore before they head to Italy for the finale.
Even the episodes in Toronto are mostly shot in their studio. Like, they did an ice-themed challenge (of course), but didn’t even bother to go to an actual hockey rink, just had a tiny one put in the studio kitchen. It looks like a low-budget operation, or like the pandemic season.
Sorry producers, but just having a poutine challenge or asking the chefs to use maple syrup isn’t cutting it. When Top Chef goes to Texas, or Wisconsin, or wherever, they make more of an effort to show the cities and countryside. A season named after an entire country, and it’s mostly culinary stereotypes in a Toronto studio? Is the CBC producing this?
Sounds like you want statehood treatment.
What can you offer the white male landowners of Arizona for our two senate seats?
Oh, I also follow a lot of extremists at both political poles, plus anarchists to cover all bases. Gotta say: right wing memers are Other Level

Some of it is funny, but it becomes less funny when you realize how many of them BELIEVE all this stuff.
(To wit: 40% of Republicans polled believe more people died from the COVID vax than from COVID. What do you even do with those people? Ground them up for pig feed? Ok, put that in the “maybe” pile.)
Definitely. Right wingers will joke about anything, and seem to enjoy punching down very much. Instead of just feeling a little sick, like normal funny folks going to hell.
They also have an amazing knack for having their poor, widdle snowflaek emotions shattered into many delicate pieces and EVERYONE must join in the pity party when things don’t go the way they insisted it would.
To writ: Iraq, the Great Recession, Charlottesville 2017…
EDIT: but NEVAR FOURGIT: THEIR MANLY MEN WHO DO MAN THINGS ALPHA BROS FOUREVER LETS TOUCH EACH OTHER DICKS CUZTO LOLZ THE LIBS
The only group I hate more than Woke snowflakes are MAGA snowflakes. Horseshit whining Libertarians are up there too.
I have had a firm No News policy for decades. Every outlet has a bias. TV news wants eyeballs. They only show shit that draws eyeballs and therefore appeals to the lowest common denominator.
For major current events like the Ukraine attack on Russian air bases, it is particularly important to look at multiple outlets to get a balanced picture of what actually happened.
And the truth will always be somewhere in the middle.
Btw, James Bond movies have predicted a LOT of things in the past. This is one of them.
This was absolutely bang on.
Great post.
As to me, I like to see if different outlets mention the same event. Then go all NOPE when it turns out it’s just Mike Florio aggregation.
Reminds me of all the rumoUrs I’ve seen going around about how “Ohtani refused to advertise Teslas for REALLY SCANDALOUS REASONS” & they are baseless bullshit.

I see Jake tapper is peddling a book about how Biden was propped up like he wasn’t one of the journalistic kickstands that made it possible and called those of us who called that shit in 2019 liars, maga, or any sort of bullshit. There are no legitimate institutions or media because they dug their own graves being liars and never suffering consequences. Now they have to lie in those graves.
Seeing Tapper go around to all the talk shows to engage in political necrophilia on national TV sure has been, well, something…
I mean — they’re all rats just diving off the ship.
The “something” is the fact that people like Jake Tapper look in the mirror and see themselves as men. They’re fucks who have never been men — nothing has changed about them; they’re just proving out to be the whores they’ve been all along.
And you can be a whore or you can be a man. But you cannot be both.
He’s right. I tried for many years to be a man-whore and while it may have gotten me laid a few times with frisky European lasses, I…wait, where was I going with this?

Yeah. Just like when “Ukraine” bombed Nordstream 2
He did not want dumbass to leak it on Signal by including Putin on the group chat.
I think they learned the lesson after Elon sabotaged their naval drone strike.
You should always question news stories.
I never watch TV news because it is now only in the emotional manipulation business. I sure as shit don’t read obscure news blogs that claim to know the “truth.” That’s an idiotic claim, and anyways I don’t read any news blogs as a matter of principle.
I primarily read the Wall Street Journal, but I also have subscriptions to the New York Times, the Washington Post, BBC News, and the Guardian (I used to subscribe to the Economist but it bored the hell out of me). If there’s a big story I’ll look at all of them and form a Venn diagram of what they all say and see what matches up.

And the opposite is the truth
Do you think you affection for the Marines (or Merchant Marines? Whatever you did) provides you more clarity about how to really see these foreign policy moves?
The Eagle transporter is aight, but its no Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Season x of American Ninja Warriors starts tonight. Wife loves it.
There is one reporter that you can trust and she is Canadian and her name is Janis Mackey Frayer. In her earlier career she was in the shit in the war zones of the Middle East. She’s since reported from Beirut, India and some other dangerous places.
I mention her because I admire her at it drives wifey nuts.
So, she’s hot, huh?
How big are her tits?
THIS. HMM, need a way to make a woman’s tits shrink when they don’t tell the truth. Never trust a woman with a flat chest! Large naturals are truth, justice, and the American Way!
Honestly, I start with the BBC and then try and find hyper local outlets where possible (eg I went to the Colorado Sun for the Boulder attack verification). But we’re all fucked.
Ditto on the BBC. I also check The Guardian daily.
Yeah, they have accurate stuff, plus I can check on the price of crisps.
Same on both.
The BBC is generally my source for everything not involving dentistry.
I wonder why
