Random Thoughts with BFC, Volume 29

Remember that old SNL sketch “Fecal Matter with your host John Fecal”? No? Yeah I figured it was just me. It was a solid (heh) talk show format with a specialized host and topic. Well, we ain’t exactly doing Pod Flies Open around here, but what about in written form, maybe say like a mix between John Fecal, Jack HandeyBalls’ 25 questions, Rev’s take on Larry King, and I don’t know, my own fucked up mind? With that backdrop I present to you the twenty-ninth edition of a potentially sporadically recurring irregularly scheduled Random Thoughts with BFC! Now also (occasionally) in open thread form! If you want to make this interactive, drop a note/question/bon mot in the comments ala my old Mouth Flies Open  attempt at an advice column.

  • Howdy.  I’ve been derelict in writing lately, so here are some random thoughts.
  • The NFL draft is rapidly approaching, and if you thought Rev was bullish on QBs projecting 5 to go in the first round, take a look at the horseshit the “professionals” are spewing on ESPN: Yates says four of the first five picks will be QBs, plus Bo Nix at 12 and Pe-nix at 36, and then 14 WRs between rounds one and two.
  • Guess not everyone agrees with Brick on drafting linemen to build championships.  I do, though, so keep me on the good list.
  • While I was getting ready for work and trying not to wake up Lady BFC the other day, I had a thought that I can’t decide if it’s brilliant or stupid:
    • Sound waves are like ghosts, in that they can go through doors, whereas light is more like a vampire in that it has to be invited into your home.
  • Let that marinate, I guess. Feedback (possibly) welcome.
  • I can’t explain why, but this song/old SNL but has been popping into my head randomly this week:

  • Best work by Taran Killam outside of Community.
  • Does anyone else throw doorfliesopen[dot]com in multiple browsers every time they’re at the Apple store or just me?
  • How about some more travel observations? What percentage of missed flights do you think are from people actually in the airport but drunk at a bar? 10%? Significantly higher or lower?
  • Bold move with the prominently branded Enron duffel bag, random dude on the train. How else can you tell the world either “I gave my all to and got fucked by this enterprise” or “I’m a huge fan of rampant corruption?” Other than a MAGA hat, of course.
  • Since it’s April, it’s time for the annual reminder that there is absolutely no reason for us (Americans) to play a game of higher or lower with the IRS except for the fact that tax preparation service companies are very good lobbyists.
  • Equally as bad as tax season, it is now definitely allergy season. And I know that because in the morning I feel like someone has snuck into my bedroom and done a reverse Egyptian pharaoh, shoving stuff up through my nostrils into my brains.
  • My wifi has been garbage lately. Is it because I’m watching too much porn? Not enough? Unrelated to porn? Too much scrolling of Instagram to see things like a faux juggalo gen Zer repeatedly failing to do the Macarena?
  • Full disclosure: I’m writing this without a specific publishing date in mind, so while I expect tax season and hayfever to be relevant/timely the White Sox’s record futility (scoreless all season, no wins since September 2023) may be somewhat improved upon by the time this post runs. However, this may be the funniest single thing I’ve seen in sports: they delayed the resumption of a game after a rain delay due to not having a first base coach.  Who was clearly taking a shit.

  • Yeah, that’s fucking great.
  • I guess this post is due a rant that’s a little more petty than the tax / allergy season one up there. Fine. There’s an ice cream place called Jeni’s that is headquartered in Columbus but has proliferated all across the country, especially in cities that I’ve happened to live in over the past 5ish years. Anyhoodles, they have my absolute favorite flavor of ice cream period, sweet cream biscuits and peach jam. It is fucking magnificent. Actually chunks of biscuits and peaches, this stuff lives up to its name and then some. But that’s not what the rant is about. Jeni’s, like all hipster ice cream, is really fucking expensive. And fine, a fat tax is a really good idea for me, and if the market is willing to bear that price, good for them. Here’s what I don’t get: a pint of Jeni’s ice cream is $12 at the ice cream shop(pe). Where I’m ostensibly buying it directly from them, no middle man layering in margin, additional cost of freight, loading and unloading, incremental refrigeration, etc. So how the fuck is the same pint of ice cream $9.99 at Whole Foods? That’s not a place known for its low low prices, and when you haul your ass to the point of origin, isn’t that where you’re supposed to get the deal? I’ve been seeing the same thing at some craft breweries, too. If I’m visiting the point of production as the point of sale (and tipping your fucking employees), how is it MORE EXPENSIVE than at a different retailer after all the incremental costs and margins have been layered on?  You’re either giving Whole Foods too good of a deal, you’re fucking me, or that ice cream is expired/tainted. But it’s still fucking delicious, so I may have to run over to Whole Foods tomorrow to grab another pint or two.
  • Oh and Fuck Ohio.
  • Alright, that’s enough of that, and we’re well over the league site minimum; how about a little fill in the blank to close us out?  “Baseball season is here, and while it’s obviously the far inferior sport to football, I still enjoy its _____________________.”

My hometown is Washington DC (actually Arlington Virginia) and I’ll show you some pictures I took.

My two favorite sculptures, in a town full of monuments, are the U.S. Grant memorial right in front of the U.S. Capitol building, and also a cutaway of a Pratt & Whitney out at the Air & Space Museum by Dulles Airport.

This is the left (north) part of the Grant Memorial. It shows a cavalry attack The south side shows an artillery attack.

https://ibb.co/hC2mWp6

If you look closely, there is a cavalry rider who has fallen, and is about to be be crushed by the horses. The fallen horseman is a self-portrait of sculpture Henry Shrady.

This is an engine. I can tell you more about this engine than you would ever care to know.

I think would have liked living in DC. I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir for three years (minus boot camp) and I liked it there. But fate employment took me to Columbus, and I stayed.

Columbus is kind of the flip side of the old saying; it’s a nice place to live, but I wouldn’t want to visit there.

BugEyedBoo

Admit it, your favorite part of DC is Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree: https://hirshhorn.si.edu/explore/wish-tree-washington/

Aiee yee yee yee!

Brick Meathook

All of my favorite Yoko Ono memories (which are exactly none) happened in Toronto.

BTW, when we were counting up military veterans(as if if anyone cared) I apologize for leaving you out. I cared, and I hope you know that. Please pay your dues. The United States Military is the gift that keeps on giving.

BugEyedBoo

I think I’ll get over the slight. 🙂 I spent 2+ years in Belvoir working with civilians as a lab tech in a research lab (NVESD now). It wasn’t exactly onerous duty. I got to mess with some pretty cool equipment, courtesy of the US taxpayer. I guess it’s the thought that counts, though – if they’d have sent me to West Germany (showing my age there) to repair tank searchlights in a tent, I’d have done it.

blaxabbath

My dream job is professional first base coach. Ask anyone. Been saying it for decades

If I were that late to the box, you’d see me fucking hustlin’ over there, boy.

I think I’m getting better at the talking about stuff type interviews! Going into another cycle of interviews, 5 companies this time, although haven’t had the recruiter screen for 1, that’s tomorrow. Looks like quite a few technical interviews next week. It’s kinda weird how many DS positions ask leetcode-style programming problems when that’s not really how Python is used on the job.

Brick Meathook

Zymm, don’t talk about it, you stare them right back in the eye and tell them you don’t give two shits about coding or Python or anything else, and you don’t like the guy’s shirt either (although call it a “blouse” or a “top.”) Trust me, you’ll get hired at top dollar.

BugEyedBoo

Still a classic:

Interviewer: What do you think your biggest weakness is?
Candidate: I’m too blunt.
Interviewer: I don’t think that’s a weakness.
Interviewer: I don’t give a fuck what you think.

Doktor Zymm

I haven’t been asked the biggest weakness question since my entry level job interviews back when I finished up grad school. It’s a combination of STAR method crap and the more conversational ‘tell me about your approach to data science’ type things, which I vastly prefer

BLACKS FOAR TRUMP lost like 25% of its membership today. SAD!

Redshirt

Eh, Trump can make up two lost votes. NBD

Gumbygirl

It’s only 3/5ths of a vote.

Doktor Zymm

Was OJ in one of those states that let convicted felons vote?

Don T

“existential malpractice” 😂🤣

Wakezilla

It’s rather appropriate that OJ has died the same year Stefon Diggs has left the Bills, effectively killing their window.

Gumbygirl

FUCK OJ. FUCK TAXES. FUCK OHIO. (Sorry Redshirt, you’re my favorite) I have to go get my taxes done today, in Redlands, so I’ll be driving home trying not to get slaughtered by all of the Coachella tweakers on Interstate 10. FUCK COACHELLA!

Doktor Zymm

Godspeed!

Okay news channels, enough about OJ dying. I’m almost longing for a story about Agent Orange.

We were due for some wall to wall OJ coverage.

Oh, shit. We may get an entire news cycle where Trump is not mentioned. Who knows what he’s going to do to get everyone’s attention?!

I love Jeni’s ice cream, only $8 here in NC. The Brown Butter Salted Caramel is excellent as is the cinnamon bun.

BugEyedBoo

For me, it’s Darkest Chocolate and Savannah Butttermint.

Game Time Decision

We have Kawartha Dairy, and their ice cream is very good. My favoUrite is “Moose Tracks” which is vanilla ice cream with chocolate peanut butter cups swirled with fudge

BugEyedBoo

‘Moose Tracks’ is so 20th Century.

https://jenis.com/products/sorbets-frose

(Actually, everyone’s version of Moose Tracks is pretty good.)

I remember when I was a kid you had Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Neapolitan, and Fudge Swirl. You might see Butter Pecan. Mint Chocolate Chip was the height of decadence.

I’d bet all my moneys that some pervert redneck already tried to hook a car engine to a personal…um…automated self-service device.

there’s a mixed fuel about 2 strokes ( haha) that i can’t make work

In another blog I visit, OJ came up in a thread. Someone tried to float the theory that OJ’s son did it, and they got smacked down in a hurry.

SonOfSpam

So

Like 20 years ago I worked with a guy whose brother was an NFL linebacker and a contemporary of OJ’s.

According to this guy, his brother told him that OJ’s son was the killer (tired of watching stepmom partying all over town with dad’s money) and that’s why the DNA matched and OJ helped cover it up afterwards.

Only thing I could confirm is that the guy I worked with was definitely the football player’s brother.

Redshirt

If his son did it, OJ wouldn’t have tried to fight. He would’ve taken the fall so no over-zealous forensic expert/fan takes a closer look at the DNA.

SonOfSpam

Oh I don’t believe the son thing for a second, just a story.

King Hippo

Yeah, I saw some documentary “exploring” this, probably during #NuAIDS lockdown (THANKS Obama!!!!) when I would watch almost anything.

It was…not convincing beyond making the son look like kind of an asshat who needed a better father figure in his life.

King Hippo

Also…another blog?? BugEyed WHORE is MOAR LIEK it smgdh

BugEyedBoo

I prefer the term, “Open Relationship”.

Horatio Cornblower

I assure you I’m working just as hard on that as OJ ever did.

I mean, aside from not killing anyone in the first place.

King Hippo

is hard work not killin fools innit??

Dunstan

Is Al Cowlings available to drive OJ’s hearse?

Sharkbait

Oh that’s a deep cup. Of which, OJ was apparently a fan of.

OJ’s death is not filling me with the same sense of glee that the death of Kissinger and Limbaugh did, and he killed two* people!

Which just goes to show what utter sacks of shit Limbaugh and Kissinger were.

*Yes, Kissinger is likely behind hundreds of thousands of death, but OJ was more of a hands-on type.

Our PT shorts were like that until the mid ’90’s. We called them Daisy Dukes.

Horatio Cornblower

Not this year. The new uniforms are awful. Look like cheap crap. And it turns out it’s not Fanatics fault; they manufactured them, but to the exact specs received from Nike, which is trying to push some new super fabric out to the masses by making MLB teams wear them in public.

I would say this marketing idea is not working.

ArmedandHammered

Well it was obviously not a Gen Z idea as they have no idea what baseball even is.

ballsofsteelandfury

I’ve seen Jeni’s in our local “gourmet” market. Crazy expensive, so I’ve never tried it. Shit, I think a pint of Häagen Dazs for $7 is expensive.

May have to try your favourite flavour, though….

This stuff is my favorite stupid fancy ice cream. Tends to be less than Jeni’s at least

BugEyedBoo

Columbusite here. Jeni’s used to be a lot better than it is now. It started out in Columbus’ North Market, then spread throughout the city and suburbs. I’m sure they’ve fallen prey to incremental cost cutting methods on ingredients and processing, to save a penny here and a penny there. A few years ago they had some issues with bacterial contamination in their processing plant, which is something that wouldn’t have happened way back when, when all of their ice cream was churned at the shop.

Then, and even now, they had some really good flavors, and they weren’t shy about trying new ones. I tried a chocolate coconut curry flavor of theirs once that tasted like spicy hot soap, which was the only ice cream that I ever threw away because it tasted so bad. But that was an exception. It was always, and still is, worth a stop when I was at the North Market.

I guess I’m happy for them if they’re national now; local boy makes the big time! But for me Graeters’s is still better than Jeni’s and always has been.

Horatio Cornblower

I just go up the street to UConn’s famous dairy bar and buy a gallon of banana chocolate chip.

Whole Foods gets some hella good deals, see the single-barrel barrel-strength apparently not actually a distillery exclusive bottle of Four Roses I got there a couple weeks ago.

I absolutely DO NOT trust the IRS to tell me the correct number if that’s how we did it, so I would have to do the same amount of work checking them as I’m doing now. They have tried to scam me for money I didn’t owe multiple times over the years, and I’m sure the bullying tone they use in their letters has scared a lot of people into over paying. I’m pretty sure the so-called ‘tax gap’ is about a quarter of the size they say it is because they’re counting all these bullshit demands in there.

At least nowadays they are required to send you a letter saying that they’re totally wrong and you don’t actually owe them a thing after you refute their cash grabs. Back when they were like ‘are you sure you actually sent us this quarterly payment’ and I sent them back a copy of the canceled check that they cashed 11 months ago, I just never heard from them again and had to assume it was resolved.

Oh, and guess what? If they fuck up and issue you a refund that you didn’t request because they credited a quarterly or something else wrong, even if you don’t touch the check and spend hours on the phone to get it cleared up ASAP they still charge you penalties and interest.

Fuck the IRS with a rusty pitchfork.
