Evening. As a reminder, we’re giving scotchnaut a little break so he comes back for the NFL season rested and ready. Just like Jeff George .
If you missed Monday’s installment of BFC’s On Morality, the TL;DR was people don’t give a fuck about their fellow humans. They’re selfish. And as case in point: I prioritized working out and cooking dinner for my wife over preparing tonight’s open thread, so you’re getting a little bit of a Karen Carpenter job.
But only a little, I had thought a bit about a lower stakes behavior that’s been grinding my gears: QR codes everywhere.
Now to be clear, I don’t mean the old man rant or “I want a physical menu,” though I find myself more than sympathetic to that cause as well. As a man about town, I often leverage DC’s Capital Bikeshare network to get around without risk of bike theft and only slightly more risk of getting mowed down by a Maryland driver. To unlock them, you use your phone to scan a QR code and start your ride. And lately, I have noticed a (not literal) epidemic of extra QR code stickers on the handlebars of these bikes.

Many of them seem to be Soundcloud accounts (or at least purport to be), and I guess I can respect the hustle to an extent, but given the world we’re living in it would be completely unsurprising if scanning them automatically opens up CashApp to fund someone’s custom Fleshlight habit or something (looking at you, Spam)
Which makes this a twofer on modern moral malfeasance–
1) The selfishness to plaster your QR code on something intended to help people get around town because your demo album is more important than anything else (and the littering when I rip those stickers off the bikes) and
2) The fact that scammers are so pervasive via email, text, phone, and in real life that it’s not worth a shot to see if maybe someone out there is the next big thing musically and just trying to get exposure.
Do better, people. And I’ll keep angrily ripping QR codes off of bikes.
Sports on TV Tonight:

Other béisbol on MLB.tv
Big Orange Ball
Lynx at Tempo, 7pm DFO time on Prime

Alright folks, enjoy your Thursday evening, try to put a little less selfishness into the world and see if it helps at all.
