Your “Oh This Guy Again?” Thursday Night Open Thread

Evening. As a reminder, we’re giving scotchnaut a little break so he comes back for the NFL season rested and ready. Just like Jeff George .

If you missed Monday’s installment of BFC’s On Morality, the TL;DR was people don’t give a fuck about their fellow humans. They’re selfish. And as case in point: I prioritized working out and cooking dinner for my wife over preparing tonight’s open thread, so you’re getting a little bit of a Karen Carpenter job.

But only a little, I had thought a bit about a lower stakes behavior that’s been grinding my gears: QR codes everywhere.

Now to be clear, I don’t mean the old man rant or “I want a physical menu,” though I find myself more than sympathetic to that cause as well. As a man about town, I often leverage DC’s Capital Bikeshare network to get around without risk of bike theft and only slightly more risk of getting mowed down by a Maryland driver. To unlock them, you use your phone to scan a QR code and start your ride.  And lately, I have noticed a (not literal) epidemic of extra QR code stickers on the handlebars of these bikes.

Many of them seem to be Soundcloud accounts (or at least purport to be), and I guess I can respect the hustle to an extent, but given the world we’re living in it would be completely unsurprising if scanning them automatically opens up CashApp to fund someone’s custom Fleshlight habit or something (looking at you, Spam)

Which makes this a twofer on modern moral malfeasance–

1) The selfishness to plaster your QR code on something intended to help people get around town because your demo album is more important than anything else (and the littering when I rip those stickers off the bikes) and

2) The fact that scammers are so pervasive via email, text, phone, and in real life that it’s not worth a shot to see if maybe someone out there is the next big thing musically and just trying to get exposure.

Do better, people. And I’ll keep angrily ripping QR codes off of bikes.

Sports on TV Tonight:

Small White Ball:

Nats at Braves, 6pm DFO time on ESPN

Other béisbol on MLB.tv

Big Orange Ball

Lynx at Tempo, 7pm DFO time on Prime

Liberty at Aces, 9pm DFO time on Prime

Fuzzy little yellow ball

There appears to be Tennis on tv (and IRL in my metaphorical backyard) but Lord knows I don’t know how to find it.

Oblong red or yellow ball

Collingwood vs Geelong, 430am DFO time on FSP or the WatchAFL app

Alright folks, enjoy your Thursday evening, try to put a little less selfishness into the world and see if it helps at all.

I really wish Southland Tales had worked as a film. It was so ambitious.

BallsofLacrosseAndMapleSyrup

In my dad’s retirement home there’s posters for help with smart devices for seniors and it has a qr code to scan.
First, if you can’t work the device, how would one use the qr code to get help
Second, don’t scan those codes, like ever

blaxabbath

Why not scan them?

Is it a link to some old dudes demo?

Or free, on my plex server. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyNnvzn9bOw

I have in fact used the “drinking wine…” line in France.

Please, for the love of [insert deity here], do NOT scan random barcodes in public*

*restaurants are a different story but on bike handlebars? Hard pass

We have so much healthy food jammed into both of our fridges that I want pizza and wings.

/Funny, that

Doktor Zymm

I should eat all the perishable food in my fridge before I go out of town for 3 weeks so of course I want to order food

scotchnaut

I’ve read about an Ethiopian chocolate chip cookie lasagna that is right around the corner from your place. It would be a crime if you didn’t try it before you left.

WCS

That seems like strange, cruel joke….

I MUST HAVE IT

Gumbygirl

What’s Ethiopian about it? Does it run fast?

By coincidence I am jamming tacos into my mouth right now.

Oh wait that’s not a coincidence that’s ironic.

A surfing session isn’t complete until four hours later and your sinuses unlock and dump out all the sea water that got pushed in when you tried to duck-dive a big wave and didn’t make it and you got sent through the high-pressure washing machine cycle.

Gumbygirl

I went for my walk at dusk, and got giant snootfuls of tiny gnats. I could probably use a saltwater sinus rinse

Senor Weaselo

Went to grab a slice from the local place and they have 1% Club on and just showed a maze. As Joel McHale’s the host I thought of one thing.

CONCACAF agreed which I didn’t see coming.

scotchnaut

The best take I’ve seen is that all the other soccer org’s are upset as to how the 100’s of millions of bucks are to be distributed in the form of bribes.

Horatio Cornblower

I will leave a restaurant if the only option is QR menus. I came here to eat and relax, not to hold my phone 4″ from my eyes while simultaneously trying enlarge the screen just to find out your appetizers suck.

Doktor Zymm

It’s worse in other countries when you don’t have wifi and have to download their menu using 2g or whatever shit network they have in Tajikistan

King Hippo

This QR code thing just makes me extra glad I’ll be ded soon enough. I do not wish to see how MOAR enshittified we gets.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I mean they’re not really any different than printing http://www.bonerpolice.com or whatever your band is called on a sticker and slapping it on things.

Doktor Zymm

When they first started having a bikeshare thing in Chicago I signed right up for the unlimited plan, at which point I found out that it was a total scam, much like many other things implemented during Rahm Emanual’s tenure. You could only ride the bike in 30 minute increments before you had to go to one of the racks and lock it up. You could immediately take in back out again, because you had unlimited 30 minute sessions, but if you had it checked out for even ONE minute beyond 30 you were charged extra on an ongoing basis. Such BS!

Horatio Cornblower

Rahm Emanual sucks.

The bike share here ends on city streets. So the still cold war zoned military access roads to post are not covered. Leaves the last intersection before post a bike parking lot every Monday morning.

ballsofsteelandfury

I ignore QR codes completely.

Or draw penises on them.

Obligatory (and still hilarious)

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

The thing that annoys me about QR codes is that I hate having to use the internet to do things (like reading a menu or turning off the lights in my living room) when there are perfectly valid real-world alternatives that are at worst only marginally less convenient (such as paper menus or FUCKING LIGHT SWITCHES).

Doktor Zymm

Eh, at least for light switches having both is really the way to go, it’s nawt easy to enable voice control w/o internet and handsfree lights can be a lifesaver. There’s The Clapper (which I assume you can still buy?) but you can only put that on one light, and it isn’t hands free cuz, ya know, the sound of one hand clapping is silence

The problem is that if you use the switch to turn off the light, you can’t turn it back on again with the voice control. Another issue is that if you get enraged and rip the plug out of the wall socket and throw the whole lamp out the window to smash on the pavement below while screaming incoherent curses at Alexa because it refused to acknowledge your command, your wife gets all cranky and insists you have an “anger management” problem.

Doktor Zymm

I use smart buttons with smart bulbs instead of switches, they go on the wall just the same, solve the on/off problem, and work with dimmers. I can also do schedules and turn stuff on and off remotely. I have my window aircon in Chicago on a smart plug and I turn it on when I’m at the airport so my place is cooled down by the time I get there. It’s great

Doktor Zymm

I actually meant to type ‘zero hands’ but I guess the koan is mentally entrenched in my head as ‘one hand’
