Okay.  I have to try to say this in a way which won’t sound racist….

For the few years I’ve been writing Sexy Friday now, I’ve often drifted in a direction which reflects the bulk of my life experience.  Most of the ladies I’ve dated in my life have been blonde Caucasians.  This was not by design.  It has not been a conscious choice on my part, necessarily.  It’s just how things happened.  And I now realize I have put a disproportionate number of ladies into my Sexy Friday posts which reflect that experience.

Having said that, I have always found women of color to be beautiful.  I have had relationships with women of all races.  Well, maybe not “all”, but several.  We won’t go into my dating history right now…

But here’s the thing…

Show me someone who tells you “I don’t see race” or “I don’t see skin color”…. and I’ll show you a racist.

Of course you see race or skin color.  You SHOULD see it!!!!!

And if you claim you don’t see it, then you’re a fucking liar.

You have to see it.  You have to deal with it.  You have to embrace cultural differences and learn about them.  And you have to appreciate others for who they are and how their culture has been developed throughout their lives and throughout history.  And in some cases, what they or their culture has overcome.

It should be about loving and embracing a person for who they are.  For what their heart has to say.  Not where they came from.  And definitely not from preconceived notions.

Anywhooooo….

It’s the last weekend of February.  Which is Black History Month.  So that’s what we’re doing this week.

Cultural Differences

I was lucky enough to have been born and raised in an area, geographically speaking, which is culturally diverse.  And when I say I was “lucky” for that, I mean it.

Most of my family, and a lot of my friends, were not so lucky.  Central Maryland, where I was born and raised; and Central North Carolina where I live now by necessity and where my family is from are only about 300 miles apart geographically.  But they are worlds apart otherwise.  And I’m not saying racism doesn’t exist everywhere to one degree or another.  It does.

But what I’m saying is that I was lucky enough to have been raised in a place where I, as an individual, was able to meet and grow up with people from other cultures, learn about them, and appreciate our differences.

We’re All Just People

Certain cultural differences aside, we are all the same.

Let’s start acting like it.  It’s not difficult.  We all have a lot of problems in life, but this should not be one of them.

In future weeks we’ll be seeing other cultures.  People of all cultures are beautiful.

I Met A Man

On Wednesday of this week, I met a man.  He is 96 years old.  He is a drummer.  Or at least he was.

But that’s not what we mostly talked about.

What we mostly talked about was his experiences as a black man who was trying to get ahead in the 50s and 60s in America.

He never hit it big as a drummer.  According to him, that was at least partially due to being a black man.  I have no reason to doubt that.

But he did play jazz clubs in New Orleans and for a while he did get some session work. With Sam Cooke among others.  Which is cool in and of itself.
