Count down the hours until Scotchy heralds in our last full NFL weekend. Oy.
Another weird Prem weekend, two fixtures per day. Arsenal will likely disembowel Palace for the early risers (7:30, USA), followed by a broadcast network-televised slap fight between Robins Hood and Praise Beesus (12:30, NBC).
Only one watchable game tomorrow, the Hammers invading Team Knifey (9:00, USA). All kind of meh.
Of course, the larger news is the increasingly unsubtle writing on the wall that the Premier League is indeed going to put Everton up against the wall. As a warning to others. The Robins Hood may follow. I am not complaining, just resigned to the fact now. The era of the comically inept/possible money laundering dipshit owner is coming to an end. And nobody wants to inherit the mess. Fuck knows what is actually going on with the beautiful stadium that didn’t get financed properly or built in time.
As I write this, I have two episodes left in the brilliant, bleak as fuck and THEN SOME, new season of Fargo. It is good brain fuel for when one is abandoning all hope for human society. Perhaps I will finish it Friday night? Closure is always nice.
My heating system has been a pain in the arse all week, and it is straining the edges of Hippo’s sanity.
100% committed to maintaining my absolute boycott of watching MLB. My sim leagues are all that I do, to keep my few remaining maths/game theory neurons active.
Here we are now. Entertain us!
By the way – quick PSA: When you get a new car, regardless of brand or class, do a quick wheel alignment test and have it dialed in so it’s not just “in the green”, but done right. And yes, there’s a noticeable difference between simple “within spec” and “done right”, especially at highway (or even better – autobahn) speeds.
Watching USMNT playing against Slovenia, and the female sideline reporter just said one of the US midfielders “plays box-to-box” and that made me happy.
I always said, the most prestigious spot in world footy must be box-to-box midfield for Bayern Munchen’s women’s team
By the way, Hippo, if you want a good suggestion about a book series about the end of the world (and what comes after) – try the Bobiverse a try – “We Are Legion (We Are Bob)”. 😉
Alright, time to put on some long underwear and take my dumbass dog for a walk.
I have no idea at what temperature he would not want a walk, but apparently it is not “20 but feels like 6 and you have very short hair, stupid”
Not sure your dog needs long underwear but maybe Connecticut dogs are built different
He has a very handsome sweater that he hates but will be wearing anyway.
We had a smallish terrier (RIP Skittles) who loved dressing up. He’s been the only one.
He loves being with you, not the walks necessarily.
Just read out a series of letters and numbers over the phone for my daughter.
“D as in Djibouti, Z as in Zapp featuring Roger, K as in Knuckle…”
I am super helpful.
“P as in pneumonia”
also pterodactyl
I choose to pronounce the silent “K’s” at work. I actively seek out words to put into phrases.
“What’s the code for plastic Ka-nives?”
“I hurt my Ka-nee on the weekend.”
Makes sense that a Ka-nuck would do that.
Jack Harbaugh still watches film and berates his sons on the phone post-game.
That John and Jim didn’t become Maronivich Twinsies is a minor miracle.
Missed all the activity today because I was taking a pistol permit class. I now have certificates that will allow me to purchase and carry guns in Connecticut, Utah, and 39 other states.
I have never fired a pistol in my life. This should not be that easy.
STAND UR GROUND
You might want to practice a little bit if you actually want to hit anything.
Lowratio has an expired Mexican EMT license, so there’s on-site medical staff in case of emergency.
You laugh, but I get my opiates and steroids for 20% of what Americans pay.
Yeah, plus I’d add that if getting the license is for actual personal defence and not because it’s required by work or a firing range, Horatio should read up on what ammo he actually needs to get (my current load is 3 Glasers, followed by a mix of 180gr JHP & 180 extra spicy
We actually did spend a lot of time of why having the right ammunition for your gun in important. Who knew that guns exploding in your hands was bad?
lol, that’s a given. I was thinking more along the lines of over-penetration, stopping power, ricochet risk…
I have to give the instructor credit, he spent a lot of time, and showed a hilarious video, dealing with things like that.
The video was some guy firing .50 cal. rifle at a car door 100 yards down range. You hear the bullet come whistling back, (apparently doors are bad for target shooting because their relatively soft construction makes them prone to ricochets), and clipped him in the side of the head.
*FMJ extra spicy (+P).
My father was in the military and has told me that the best way to ensure you hit what you’re aiming at with a handgun is to throw the handgun at your target.
The French military then.
Or someone still salty about the replacement of the M1911A1 with the M9?
Everyone knows someone who will never not be.
Only if you consider replacing something “that just worked” * with something that was an underpowered, unreliable, inaccurate, less ergonomic, Italian-designed piece of shit reason enough to be salty..
*I never did find out why the powers that be didn’t just accept a slightly bulkier grip so one can use a staggered or double column magazine and called an A2…
Just saw a commercial for HIV medicine, biktarvy.
So… do just weird looking people get AIDS in 2024?
And they apparently REALLY love doing active, outdoor social things! But obvi get their medical advice from teh teevee box instead of BIG PHARMA DOCTORS smh
should be taking ivermectin obvs
“Hey Senor, St. John’s played another close game against a ranked opponent.”
“Okay, so did they win?”
“They played another close game!”
Felipe Lopez ain’t walking through that door
Well, Rick Pitino is known for making things close without actually finishing them out.
There was certainly more dribbling than expected.
Banana Honeycakes!!!!
I’m going to pretend that it’s 20 degrees warmer than it is and have mai tais tonight.
Why pretend? A good drink is a good drink regardless of the weather. Hell, here it’s like -18C (so 0-ish? F), but that doesn’t stop me drinking mastika (or mastiha?) the way the Greek (bar) gods intended – chilled enough that it forms ice crystals in the bottle.
It’s 20 F here in CT today, but feel like 6 F with the wind chill.
So, you know, if you’re dumb enough to go outside in your underwear on a breezy 20 day it feels like 6.
Heaven’s Hill Bottled-in-Bond
Finished watching Reacher S2 last night. I liked it but it’s
almosta parody of the tough guy genre. Then we watched Free Guy. First two acts were good but the movie failed to stick the landing. It was worth watching, though.
On Matt Ryan’s scale of Pretty Good (where 1 is “kinda good” and 10 is “almost great”) I’d have rated the second season of Reacher as a 3 – kinda sorta good.
I didn’t feel my time watching it was completely wasted, like it was when I watched Saltburn or Leave the World Behind. A lot of watching it is, “I can’t wait to see how he’s gonna kill this guy/these guys.”
It met my expectations completely, and never pretended to be anything it wasn’t. Definitely had zero trouble finishing it; it was nice and tidy.
Sure it was that, but you’d agree that it wasn’t as good as Season 1, though.
S1 is better than S2.
This Robins Hood defence, I call it Donald Trump because it SURE AS FUCK AIN’T BUILD NO WALL
Fargo completed. A man is grateful.
/nice reminder that last 30-ish minutes just how weird the Coen brothers remain (not in a bad way, mind, but JEEBUS)
A man does not know what to watch next.
A man’s wife wants to watch the Capote thing next, and a man remains uninterested.
I’d be in for Capote just for the cattiness. Rawr! /paw slash
The commercials for that show were how I learned Calista Flockhart is still alive.
Eh, why not give Cross Of Iron a try? Who knows, maybe your better half will appreciate a movie about the clashes of idealism vs cynicism and nobility vs ordinary people as told through the lens of a bleak as fuck WW2 war movie 😀 That, or she’ll hate it enough that you’d forfeit the right to pick the movies, so you’ll at least be relieved of that particular burden
Watched that a few weeks ago. That movie had more explosions than any other movie in like fucking EVER.
Fucking Peckinpah man.
Started The Curse last night. Hilarious AND unsettling.
‘For All Mankind’ on Apple is pretty good alternative history so far.
Speaking of Apple – The Silo’s worth a watch as well
Very much. They need to get to S2 with a quickness, before I buy all the books and ruin the ending for myself.
Who writes the book series? Me likey the end of the world readings.
Hugh Howey. There’s a decent anthology series edited/curated? by him with various short stories that do “just before the end”, “the end” and “after the end” scenarios. ( “The end is nigh / now / has come” )
…Wait, I thought everyone knew they were actually on a generational ship and that the outside is just a projection to keep people inside. Well, before the final twist, that it wasn’t a generational ship, but actually a VaultTec-style eveeel experiment!
… Kidding! Though I do vaguely remember a shitty SciFi series/movie with that premise with Tricia Helfer and … uhh, forgot the bloke’s name from Cougar Town.
It’s Senor’s morning and afternoon off, where he gets to think about how expensive his life (mostly car insurance is) and how he just wants to move under the sea wheeeeeee!
Also, because Senorita Weaselo also works at the same studio I work at two other days a week, I’m here watching the owner try and work the dents out of a French horn involving a plant stand and a vice. So far no luck, it’s just a little too far on the horn.
Hey, submarine insurance isn’t cheap either, just ask Brick…
Trust all of us olds – keep yo jimmy hats on. Otherwise, the expense burden multiplies like 1000 fold.
Jimmy Hat (artist’s conception):
Colleagues! Please do not forget to tune into the Afrikan Euros today! At this moment, Mauritania and Angola are exchanging diplomatic niceties on the football pitch — interestingly enough, they have decided that all trade decisions will be made by the nation that wins this match. Little do they know that all of their natural resources actually belong to me!
HonoUrable GovernoUr! Are these Angolan rapscallions still Commies, or is the modified hammer and sickle flag just leftover kitsch?
I’d like to see Yeah Right cover this as a side dish on the next Sunday Gravey please.
“I get mine down at the bath house!”
Anybody started True Detective s3 yet? That be next on me list.
Seen all of them. Season 3 had Mahershala if I’m not mistaken and it was damn good.
Ayup. Deep shit, especially with the way it used time, aging and memory loss as part of the narrative.
Yup. Good stuff with lil Jodi & Sol Star. Looks like we’re in for a hard dive into Inuit mythos. As a primer, enjoy the 1st installment of Terry LaBan’s “Muktuk Wolfsbreath: Hard Boiled Shaman (pages 7-14):
https://breakthroughvisuals.com/wp-content/Cud/Cud%20v001%20001.pdf
The first episode was dark as fuck. Almost a horror story.
Yep, and it ain’t gettin any lighter most likely.
THIS TRUE DETECTIVE SEASON 3 PROGRESSION I CALL IT PHOTOGRAPHS OF BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA BROADCAST ON FOX NEWS BECAUSE AN INCREASE IN LIGHTNESS SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED.
That’s depressingly good
If you ever want to hear a funny story, it’s about that one time my submarine almost sank. I know because I was on it at the time. Our commanding officer was relieved of duty as soon we got back, and a new skipper reported aboard.
It actually is a pretty funny story, the way I tell it.
How long did it take you to swim up to the surface??
God help us if we ever had to do that.
Even if we sunk in the Cooper River of Charleston harbor, with only five feet of water above our hatches, we would have died. Life is unfair; death is even more unfair.
u just gotta WANT IT ENUFF smgdh
Forgetting to lock the screen door? That’s grounds for a court martial.
Sounds just hilarious. Fuck Brick, you should write it up. Sounds like great material for a film, and you are in the industry.
Someone already did, (although I don’t think Brick is quite old enough to have been on this sub), and it’s a good read.

Fargo had a fantastic season. In the discussion for top 3 seasons ever.
The Kirsten Dunst, Jessie Plemmons season and the first with Billy Bob round out those others.
Day of errands. Kill me now.
Haha same
Taking my dad for blood work is not how I want to spend Saturday morning
Hoping this goes quickly and I can start my errands
In LA, we actually have a service that comes to your house to do blood work. It costs about $60 but it’s well worth it for the convenience.
My dad is wayyyyyy too cheap to pay for something like that
Start charging him $80 for the ride.
We’ve got cold rainy shit weather. The batmobile is parked in the garage and secured.
Got some cooking to do and some football to watch.
Currently covered over my head with a warm blanket and I ain’t going any fucking where this weekend.
AND?
Loving it.
“THIS GUY MAWRISSEY IS A FAHKIN’ WEIRDO. HE ASKED ME IF THERE ARE MANY PACKYS IN BOSTON AND I TAHLD HIM THERE’S SO MANY YOU WON’T KNOW WHEAH TO BEGIN AND THEN HE JUST SHOOK HIS HEAD AND IMMEDIATELY CANCELED HIS TOUAH DATE HEAH.”
Four Roses distillery this morning, only had spots on the 9 am tour
ask wha happen if some wise arse sneaks a FIFTH rose into the batch
This:
I assume you took the last spot
/jelly
I’m at half of Ep. 7 of Fargo. It’s hawt fiyah! I rrrrrreally wanna finish it today, but it’s one of those joint watch dealies 😶
I’m sure it really gets the juices flowing for sexy time, es verdad!
/found a funny
“Ask your doctor if still being alive is right for you.”
[Pulls something in his back getting up to check the temperature outside]
Do I want to be? Is there another option?
