Graduations! Inorite? Last Monday was miss T’s turn. (?! ) But really: graduation ceremonies are a total drag.
There’s no drama; everyone knows who’s getting what award. It’s barely a glorified roll call, with photo ops and speakers. I’ve attended around 20, and the speeches are the same: what a journey, hard work, you made it, time flies, growth, and hortative stuff about challenges, goals, and dreams. And, if it’s from a Puerto Rico public school, plenty of God this and Jesus that. Whatever; I’m a Live and Let Live atheist. But I will never, ever, EVER let pass a chance to sit down ceremoniously upon hearing “Remain standing for the Invocation”, then locking any judgmento’s eyes with my “Da hell you lookin’ at” upwards stare followed by the “Scripture’s thata way, nosey” head jerk. Truly I say unto you: being a self-righteous prick is more enjoyable than being a Constitutional blowhard.
Turning to pressing matters, the Opening Kickoff is 99 days away: celebrate accordingly. Me? I’ll keep on stewing about scenarios in which the Titans’ offensive line regresses despite keeping the same personnel and coaches. Hey, if it’s possible and bad, I guarantee you it’s in my head.
Onto NFL news,
Ugh. Here we go.
Pittsburgh is agog over T.J. Watt doing stuff. Related: I’m glad for not having used my personal or the office’s data for checking this sorry piece of non-news.
Onto list-based claptrap, 99 people who will shape the NFL season, per the World Wide Layoffers. It has tiers, some boilerplate (“Defensive MVP race”, “Hot-seat watch”), some portentous (“Culture-changers”, “Off-field game-changers”). [Reads back.] OK, that was just me taking potshots. The piece does have some not-obvious substance, and mentions persons of import who haven’t been moving the proverbial needle lately, like Aaron Donald (27) and Eugene Monroe (36). Other notables include Cardinals QB coach Byron Leftwich (96), Kaep (68), Tom Coughlin ([6]9), and Dan Quinn (28:3). Unknown prospect J.J. Watt is #1, and there is no “Ass kissers” tier #SavedYouAClick.
ESPN fired John Clayton, per USA Today. The article includes a video: “Disney CEO Bob Iger explains why people may be overreacting to the recent layoff’s [SIC!!11!] within ESPN.” Ah yes, the “overreaction” card, arrow #2 in the condescenders’ quiver, after “You don’t have all and / or good information”. I like Clayton, but cannot remember the last time I saw his work. (It may have just been on a split screen trying to argue a point over a meathead+ Trent Dilfer around 2010.) Games, NFL Matchup, Bob Ley, NFL Live, and a select few 30 for 30s (the outstanding Randy Moss, Bad Boy Pistons, and Ricky Williams ones): the rest of ESPN, blech.
David Carr “sets a deadline for contract negotiations” with the Raiders. Start of training camp? That’s the, uh… Assumption; he ain’t saying. Carr’s in the last year of his rookie contract and is set to make a bit less than a mill–YAAAAWWWWWWN. He’s been in OTAs despite being victim #2 in last year’s Christmas Eve Tibia Massacre. (Marcus Mariota was #1; he has also been in OTAs.) Raiders @ Titans on the Week 1 early Sunday slate / trough. NFL schedule makers: still a bunch of welebichos.
The Jets’ Christian Hackenberg is “showing signs of progress“. Also showing signs of progress, all working clocks.
There’s an ambitious but concise piece on Fox Sports that ranks the importance of NFL positions, from long snapper to QB. Well, if you can get past the NO ONE DENIES THIS opening line: “Football is the ultimate team sport.” Man I really hope that was the editor’s punch up, because otherwise it’s a fine primer. Also enticing: it’s not a slide show.
Matt Cassel will miss six weeks (thumb). If I had my way, Matt Cassel will miss the Titans’ season (sucks).
Mark Sanchez is out (knee) until training camp. Temper your Sanchize expectations, Bears fans, whichever way they may slant.
One novel thing about my daughter’s graduation was that they opened the mike to guests, in a “or forever hold your peace” kinda way. Being fairly peaceful and wanting the thing to end, I stayed in my seat. BUT, if I’d gone up there, I would’ve been brief and kept the focus on the students. (Pro tip: unless you are a renowned captain of industry or thought, public speaking opportunities are seldom “Let’s make it about me” affairs.) This is what I would’ve done.
I’d celebrate the students’ achievements. (Graduating high school may not be momentous in the grand scheme of life stuff, but forced schooling has been most of the young ‘uns life up to this point.) More importantly, I’d be truthful and denounce the snowflake, participation trophy, and millenial stuff for what it is: total bullshit. (So some post multiple selfies daily on dozens of platforms—gimme a break! Being self-absorbed is the very essence of youth.) Shitting on those below your age cohort is trite, anachronistic, and stereotyping. To paraphrase a popular sign on establishments here: “Kids don’t bother; the custodians who don’t pay attention to them are bothersome”.
I’d encourage the graduates to strive for uniqueness and cultivate their individuality; popularity out of conformism is the fleetest of thrills. To the prize getters: brace for even more undeserved scorn from peers and superiors, in college and work. We adults are equally prone to infantile pettiness and throwing-under-the-bus machinations. To those that only get a diploma: congratulations. Celebrate your present achievements, but always look forward. Dwelling on past failures is for old, tired, and washed-up losers. And to all: be productive; provide for your loved ones; and take pleasure in being independent, generous, and understanding. That way, you will never need acknowledgement to be happy.
What I would not mention are the dire local prospects—educational, economic, social, and political. That hat in the banner with the “Goodbye High [school,] Hello Avon” pretty much sums it up: higher education is not worth much for getting a job here, and it will get worse. But I digress; point is: let the graduates have their day. They have a lifetime ahead to strive and fret and self-doubt and fight and fall down and get up and repeat. Besides, let me clarify: developing an entrepreneurial mindset (with Avon or otherwise), may be the best bet for all Puerto Ricans anyway, especially the tech-savvy young.
On tap for tonight, Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals! I’ve been keeping up with Smashville’s exploits, as Predator love on Titans Twitter and [DFO] hate for Sidney Crosby has provided a pleasant echo chamber. Game is at 8:00 PM on NBCSN and CBC. Go Preds exclamation point.
Major League Dirt Loitering – Lotta games
Onto the NB—whaaaaat? You mean to tell me that the NBA Finals start A WEEK after the last conference semis game? God I used to love the NBA, now I can’t stand it. I watched most of a Thunder @ Warriors game some months back and felt like I was aging a year per every “that’s three steps”, “isolation play”, “no boxing out”, “was that a fourth step?”, “does anybody play D?”… By the fourth quarter, I was tweeting on parchment and quill.
Finally, a word on Beerguyrob: I am glad you are well and recuperating nicely. Best wishes, you Monster of Nature.

hahahahahahahahhahahahhahahaahha
Small Bears are 25-27!!!! Swept by the PADRES!!
Evening Gents.
Going into tonight’s game, I am winning my playoffs pool by 3 points. I have Sheary left and the guy in 2nd place has Crosby. I’m either going to win, or, I’m going to have a heartbreaking loss.

You’ll be fine……

I missed the first two periods because I was watching Masahiro Tanaka do his best impersonation of last year’s Michael Pineda. What the hell?
But how is his roaring elbow?
Not injured, just shitty.
How much grease was on the ball?
Saturday night at Moose’s house?
What?????

This is going less than ideally.

So, this news made me fucking queasy today. Karla Homolka (under a different name) is allowed to volunteer at her children’s school.
For all you non-Canadians (and non-true crime people) who don’t know who this piece of shit is, she aided and abetted her serial rapist husband Paul Bernardo in the luring, assault, and killings of three teenage girls in the early 90s, one of whom was her younger sister.
Due to a plea deal she got before her husband’s trial, she only got 12 years for manslaughter and as a condition of the plea doesn’t have to register as a sex offender.
And of course Quebec can’t fathom why parents are really fucking annoyed.
Ah yes. One more check mark in the “humanity sucks” column.
I am all for rehabilitation and community service, but this woman shouldn’t be anywhere near a school.
I recommend the White Bear episode of Black Mirror.
This may be my favorite Mr. Show sketch ever:

Sounds like it’s time for another Mr. Show binge.
No disagreement on either count.

Anything in particular?
Not at the moment. I just found that and didn’t feel like waiting until there was something in particular I didn’t give a fuck about to use it.

#6- The hotel we stayed at in Madrid was on Calle Lope de Vega and it, in fact, used to be called Hotel Lope de Vega. On the walls, they interesting stuff from him and about him. I took a picture. I’m going to try to upload it to share.

The scared look really makes it.
Why is he scared? He’s already got herpes. (I mean…probably)
Basically, the man gave Casanova a run for his money.
It was said of Lope that he would write a comedy during breakfast–in verse, of course. Larger than life.
I know that hotel.
I’m surprised Crosby didn’t fall over and try to get a penalty there.

#5- Sanchez is out with a knee injury already? Those Chicago high school girls don’t mess around!
When there not kiling each other all lifes matter herp derp
“The Jets’ Christian Hackenberg is “showing signs of progress“. Also showing signs of progress, all working clocks.”
That’s the stuff right there. But then as a Puerto Rican, you’ve always hated the Jets.
#4- Watt as a Steeler is going to make it WAY easier to disavow this team. Jesus I hate Pittsburgh fans.

#3 Byron Leftwich as the QB coach of the Cardinals confirms that Arizona is where old Yinzers go to die. And to teach Blaine Gabbert to be backup QBs…
Oh I do believe you are wrong about Gabbert. We’re gonna be the team to get the most out of him!
You used to date the bad girls thinking you could change them didn’t you?
I wish….
“Byron Leftwich as the QB coach of the Cardinals confirms that Arizona is where old Yinzers go to die”
So, what we already knew about Arizona?
#2 – Weird, I’m a Live and Let Die Catholic. No wonder we get along.
I’m a Live and Let Die Agnostic who grew up Catholic but apparently wasn’t pretty enough to be molested by our parish priests even though I did everything they asked as an altar boy and never never once got extra candy or a reach around. Wait…what were we talking about?
Love El Papa, tho. Solid, humble guy. For an Argentinian, that’s a miracle right there.
THAT’S THE TRUTH.
I have a secret theory that he’s not Argentinean.
So many things to unpack here!
#1 – Shouldn’t it be “Huelebichos”? What is this W shit?
Phonetic. Chileans also use the “w” waaay liberally. They’ll fuck you over in Scrabble if you allow slang.
Hey all. Blax here. Finally getting around to finishing up my latest 4×8 hydroponics build (got interrupted by painting the bedroom etc). Very excited to see this bitch finally coming together. It saddens me to know the next project I gotta take on at home is an absolute bitch of a room remodel.
The good news? To stall, maybe I’ll #content more (lolj/k)
c’mon, you’re in fellow asshole company here, and we stoically tolerate you without judgment
Yeah but you’re all old, like Ray Rice. I’m young, like Joe Mixon.
Would ya look at teh tits on this Jon Sciambi!! smh
My Egyptian coworker has a funny story about coming to America. So he arrives first, to try and get things set up, while his wife and son stay in Egypt. He lands at LaGuardia Airport. Its his first steps in America and he literally has like maybe $1000 on him and he speaks no English.
He walks out of the airport, sees his first sights and sounds of America and immediately runs back in the airport in utter terror.
See, he thought everyone in America spoke English. So when he walked outside, all he heard was Arabic cussing from the cabbies arguing. He honestly thought he was still in the Middle East and had somehow gotten on the wrong airplane.
He was freaking out at the information desk because they couldn’t understand him and vice versa. So they grab one of the taxi drivers to translate for him and that is how he figured out he was actually in the US.
A week later, he was working as a mechanic for one of the taxi companies. A few months later, he was working for us.
His 4th of July BBQ’s are epic…Imagine Kenny Powers get up but with an Egyptian guy…
?w=374&h=211
Much of America speaks English. I question how many people actually understand it though.
I got so many coworkers that can fluently speak multiple languages and I am just amazed. I can generally barely follow Hindi, but that’s kind of cheating because there are so many English words. I can understand Spanish. I can only speak English poorly.
Every single Polish coworker I have is fluent in at least Polish, German, Russian, English…and usually they will be passable in one of the following: Italian, French, or Spanish…just as a requirement for them to get their equivalent of a high school diploma.
I was dating a girl from Hungary and my one Polish worker met up with us. Halfway through the bar hop, my coworker started picking up and speaking with her in Hungarian.
“How the fuck are you doing this Wojichek?”
“Is easy. Similar to Turkish”
“YOU FUCKING KNOW TURKISH NOW?!?”
“Yes. I was at IP job site for month. I learn Turkish there”
You ever want to fucking fill like an idiot and inadequate…work with multilingual people.
1/3 if we’re lucky.

hot dog dude?
yup!
So I am at work, shooting the shit with my one coworker from Egypt. Him, his wife, and his very young son got here because his wife won the Green Card Lottery. We lucked out because we got a fantastic electrical engineer.
Naturally we started talking about that ISIS attack in Egypt because he is Coptic. I’m just listening, letting him unload about you know…the kind of daily fears he had and what not. I mean the dude hasn’t been in the US for more than a year or so. I found that with my own struggles with PTSD, having someone you can trust to unload and just let you vent can really help out.
Cue one of our other field engineers walking up.
“As a Quebecois, I know exactly what you are going through”
I could not help myself.
“Phillip…no…just…no”
“It is TRUE! No people have been as brutally suppressed by the British Empire like the Quebecois!”
“Um…the Brits slaughtered out like 20,000, mostly women and children, in Kenya during the sixties because a couple of farmers got killed”
“I am talking about a people and a culture! Not African savages”
I just started laughing my ass off.
I work with stupid people as well.
[shrugs shoulders]
Its all good. I mean he is an ass…but there are asses everywhere. Some are even quite nice to look at!
Aberg is so hot Republicans are starting to recognize global warming
Even I’ll admit that move was purty.
That was kind of a slick move there.
Thank you.

Ray Liotta is in this 4th rate movie (“Sudddenly”) that I’m watching. RAY “FUCKING” Liotta! The guy that killed in ‘Something Wild’, ‘Field of Dreams’, ‘Corrina, Corrina’ and ‘Goodfellas”. Yeah, THAT Ray Liotta. Is there no justice?
Justice: “No, not really. WHAT? WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME?”

Smh. So disrespectful of the memory of Jackie Robinson…
Ray is one of those guys that, to me, does very well in nearly all his movies, but he takes on some bad ones. Gotta keep working.
He was good in his bit role as a clerk in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
The Pens became the Caps so gradually…..
They let Curt Schilling in to sing again I see.
gonna do that “Edelveis” (sp?) song I guess??
AGREED! It will surprise nobody that I also despise ceremonies, forced celebrations amidst throngs of fucking strangers.
And wheeeeee, you graduated high school (these were my thoughts as my oldest did so last year). Do you know how hard it is NOT to graduate fucking high school??
Are those DFO shares worth a million yet? I’d like to be done with working.
Yes. We need to know when this happens. Working is stupid.
Yeah, I had one of these, but I think it was just some bad tuna salad.
OOOOOOHHHHH! It said POMP, never mind.
I worked with a waitress that never took her bra off, ever. She talked about it and her husband confirmed it at a staff party.
“Torpedo Tits Kim” owned three houses by the time she quit serving because she invested all that tip cash into real estate.

This story is kinda weird.
It’s not weird. It’s the reactionary bullshit persecution of dissidence by a dictator and close US ally, and it’s being enforced through the machinery of transnational counter terrorism built to do anything but actually counter terrorism.
Colour me unsurprised that you’re not able to see some weirdness there.
It sucks being me.
Stop sucking?
