Your “Taking Stock Of Things” Tuesday Evening Open Thread

NFL News:

  • Injury reports!
    • Cam Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc injury, and will miss at least this Sunday for sure.
      • If second-year backup Kyle Allen can get them past the Texans, then they have the Jaguars and Buccaneers on deck before a Week 7 bye.
        • Allen did go 19-of-26 for 261 yards and four touchdowns against the Cardinals.
    • Saquon Barkley is out 4-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain.
      • The Giants are avoiding the IR designation because they are unsure how severe the injury actually is, and IR is a mandatory 8-week sit.
  • Adam Vinatieri didn’t retire as some predicted, and went 5-5 on kicks last Sunday, scoring nine points total.
    • They needed it too, because just Jacoby Brissett wasn’t going to beat the Falcons.
  • Antonio Brown updates:
    1. He has enrolled in social media studies at Central Michigan, proving that you’re never too unemployable to go back to school.
      1. According to ESPN, he is registered in four online classes: Introduction to Management, Technical Writing, Death and Dying (a religion course) and Racism and Equality (a sociology course).
        • Online studies makes sense, because I’m assuming the campus Womyn’s Center might have a protest or two organized for outside his block.
      2. The Patriots have joined the Raiders in refusing to pay Brown his signing bonus.
        1. According to PFT, while he did earn a game check of $283,333, they are declining to pay the $9.0 million signing bonus because they believe he misled them about his legal troubles, which would (in their eyes) invalidate their deal.

Finally, the ex-firefighter who burned Nelson Agholor is being invited by him to a game.

That’s some quality high road after a very solid…

And somehow Dan Snyder still walks the earth.

Now, dear members of the Commentist Party, while I may not be a real lawyer,

I think this might be the best damn legal decision in the history of mankind.

Stealing verbatim (legal term!) from the BBC:

“By an illness, one should understand even small or temporary disruptions to the normal state or normal activity of the body.”

This, it said, includes the tiredness, nausea and headaches commonly associated with hangovers – and which the company, which was not named in the ruling, claimed its shots and powders could cure.

The ruling comes just days after the annual Oktoberfest beer festival kicked off in Munich.

FINALLY, a legitimate way to use my sick days, if only I could get a Canadian court to harmonize this.

I was just talking with a local musician here in St. John’s Newfoundland and we agreed that there‘s probably not enough Irish folk songs about fishing disasters written, and that’s why every Irish bar band plays the same three fucking songs over and over.

Not enough survivors 2 rite the songs ,, smh

Wakezilla

Thoughts about today: An Impeachment inquiry isn’t an impeachment and an impeachment isn’t a conviction. This seems to be a short-sighted and huge risk in an election year. The Dems have a better chance of taking Trump down at the election. All the impeachment inquiry does is make Trump the issue for 2020 candidates, versus, say, healthcare or gun control climate change.

herodotus450

People don’t care about guns and are too stupid to care about healthcare. They gotta make trump the issue.

King Hippo

Well, the people who DO care about guns are the peoples who own lots and lots of them. Otherwise, gun control support is a mile wide and a millimeter thick.

King Hippo

It’s a landmine, but the Dems are staying in line for once, and seem to be using both strategy and tactical awareness. I am cautiously optimistic (not of conviction, but winning the PR battle and the 2020 election).

All corners of the Big Tent seem pretty fired up this time. Our people show in large numbers, that’s a winning hand (even beyond the margin of dirty pool).

WCS

It’s a YUGE risk/reward move. It’s not as is if the Senate will actually convict him. If anything, this might piss off enough voters to vote against the Dems next year.

Frankly, I just don’t know anymore. If you need me, I’ll be in the kitchen, where the bar is.

Cuntler

“This might piss off enough voters to vote against the Dems next year.” Really? I don’t know one single person that hasn’t made up their mind about Trump. This is faulty logic.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

With apologies, Wakezilla, but I have heard this exact same sentiment from concern trolls for the last three years, intended to get Democrats to back down. It was hatred of Trump that led to them to win the House in 2018, and if they can duplicate a similar margin of victory they will win the presidency in a walk, no matter who the nominee is. They don’t have to fear that taking action will energize Trump’s supporters; they have to fear that inaction will demoralize their own.

ballsofsteelandfury

The BIG question, though, is what exactly are the Democrats doing to prevent another electoral college victory when the majority of the country doesn’t support the candidate? What are the Democrats doing about gerrymandering? What are the Democrats doing about how Trump is filling courts with judges friendly to his cause?

Those are the long term issues and they’re not doing anything about them because they are under the mistaken belief that it will be fine once they’re in power and THEY can take advantage like the Republicans have.

That’s horrible for democracy and our country and they’re letting it happen.

King Hippo

If haven’t already, read the excellent book “Nixonland” – this right-authoritarian machine (of which Herr Fuhrer is its culmination) has been a long time building, while everybody else was distracted trying to provide good government. It won’t, CAN’T be undone overnight. And it’s very hard when there’s nobody to negotiate with to find common ground. They’re completely led by nihilists now.

Just have to start one step/battle at a time. Otherwise, one gets overwhelmed and gives up. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE NIHILISTS WANT.

ballsofsteelandfury

The Democrats have fresh voices like AOC and others, but it seems they are stifled by the Establishment Democrats that are used to the old ways.

If the Democrats can’t hold a United front, how can they hope to undo what has been building for a while?

We really need a third party.

King Hippo

they ARE holding a united front, and AOC is valued by leadership (and by people across the Big Tent). Pelosi didn’t do anything impeachy earlier BECAUSE she wanted to present a united front, and she had no problem with members of the caucus pushing the issue while that foundation was being laid. Of course AOC’s not leading the goddamned caucus from day 1, but she hasn’t been marginalized or frozen out in any way.

Our system isn’t set up to function with 3+ parties, which is indeed a problem. If you had to assemble a true “governing coalition” you’d have better, more responsive government.

ballsofsteelandfury

It would be nice if that’s the case. I just saw her go out on a limb with her Green New Deal only for no one in her own party to fully support her. It seems they let her be a sacrificial lamb, but I’m not sure they even got anything in return…

King Hippo

she’s moving the Overton window to the left, and she has shown herself to be VERY strategic for such a new Congresswoman. All corners of the party give her good marks (even those who were originally skeptical) everywhere I read.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

The green new deal has changed the narrative on climate in the primary. She won on the green new deal.

ballsofsteelandfury

But will climate change even be an issue in the general? That’s Wakezilla’s original point.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Yes. GOTV for younger voters

King Hippo

It will be part of the next governing agenda. Most Americans aren’t issue-based voters. The key is having all Dems taking climate change seriously, and knowing their feet will be held to the fire by activists going forward.

They will run on whatever fucking wins, which is exactly what I want. You just can never have someone leading the ticket with low charisma/political ability. HillyBob proved that forever.

King Hippo

Off the record over a beer, she would agree with you. Guarantee it. We need more strategic thinkers like her, in all ideological corners of the party.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

We won’t have a realistic third party until we have ranked choice voting, and we won’t have ranked choice voting until the left unites sufficiently to make it happen. The Overton window shifts in a huge way to the left when that happens, which is why the right are going to fight it with everything they’ve got.

King Hippo

THIS, all day.

Unsurprised

Did you see how North Carolina Democrats ended up going with a heavily gerrymandered plan after the last was so illegal even the post-VRA federal courts laughed it out? They decided to protect themselves and their districts at the expense of their constituents and the public as a whole, give this grossly unconstitutional plan political and legal cover by voting heavily in its favor, and exposed themselves as venal scum who will face no consequences because they’re already set in a game that is rigged even if it’s not as set as if they could or would ever win the majority.

Take that and apply it to Congress and you have what will be the inevitable result for 2020 overall. If you think most congressional Democrats give a shit about democracy, the rule of law, the Constitution, or literally anything other than preserving their own power then you haven’t been paying attention since 1992 and I would joke about selling you beachfront property in Arizona except that’s also now inevitable and for the same reasons.

King Hippo

the state party here is in bad, bad shape. There are up-and-coming folk in Wake County specifically, but they need time.

Unsurprised

I worked for and with legislators in a state where the Democrats controlled both houses for decades and almost the entirety of NM’s statehood and this is how redistricting is done there and in every other state. It’s how it’s always been done. These guys got exposed, but it doesn’t matter because people know in other states and it still goes on.

Maybe they will by the time there’s a clear D-leaning population majority, but I’m a cynic.

King Hippo

Every state should do it like CA’s commission. Question is, how do you make that happen? Holder’s group is a start, but that’s all.

Unsurprised

Obama assembled the largest, most advanced political mobilization operation in the world in 2008 and then he turned it over the to DNC, which suffocated it in its crib because they didn’t want to actually be responsible for anything and didn’t like the idea that mobilized citizens could tell them what to do – especially if what to do would be to fuck off and die like the worthless pigs they are,

There’s only one candidate building anything similar, and he’ll never win, and his supporters will not only never participate alongside the Dems and others but will be actively opposed by both Dems and Republicans. Maybe they can work entirely outside the parties, but the parties will also do everything in their power to kills any movement they don’t control because it would be an existential threat to them. And because that’s what they have done every other time one has arisen – from the Know-Nothings to Populists to the Socialists (having the Red Scare used to imprison or exile that party’s leaders helped a lot) – and is why politics has been the province of these two parties for 160 years.

King Hippo

yeah, we discussed this before. Obama fucked up and didn’t press his advantage. It was too much faith to be put in one (fallible, I will never believe he acted in bad faith) man. We have to go about it the hard way now, which the next generation will hopefully make happen.

ballsofsteelandfury

Which candidate is that?

Unsurprised

It’s a way of keeping the people they want on both sides around because they all work together every day. I never bought into this collegial bullshit of being warriors during the day and then being friends at night because I’m crazy and cannot and will not be friends with people who share existential differences on matters of life and death.

ballsofsteelandfury

Exactly.

SonOfSpam

Wait, I’m confused…the courts just threw out the REPUBLICAN redrawn map. Unless you’re talking about something that happened a while ago…

Unsurprised

This is about the map they just approved after that one was tossed out.

King Hippo

which the party itself didn’t support, but there is no discipline over lazy representatives who don’t want to have to bother with campaigning. The court could still reject it, and hopefully will.

Unsurprised

Hopefully. But like better informed people than me have said, them voting in favor of it gives the Republicans a legal argument in court that its biases are acceptable to both parties.

King Hippo

yes, it does. And the members who did so were being selfish assholes. Which happens quite a bit (see also, what happened with the NY Senate the last decade).

It’s getting harder because sunlight is being thrown at it now.

Unsurprised

To their credit, the IDC was broken and its members thrown out when exposed and when there was a concerted effort made against them by progressive Dems and the Working Families Party. So maybe it’ll happen in NC and other states in time.

King Hippo

right – it took 10 years of damned hard work. I think you’ll need 20 years to get the ship turned around significantly, nationwide.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Trump already is the issue for 2020. The bigger ramification here is making Susan Collins, Corey Gardner, et al defend the POS-in Chief while they’re running for reelection.

SonOfSpam

And pack the fucking court. Or get rid of Kavanaugh/Gorsuch. Whatever.

King Hippo

Important to have a chance to win the Senate, or better yet – with enough numbers to abolish the filibuster.

SonOfSpam

“But the norms!” say people who aren’t sick of McConnell’s shit yet.

King Hippo

we can talk norms again when we get the Merrick Garland Supreme Court seat back, and they quit being led by nihilists.

Cuntler

Hard disagree.

First, no one who isn’t going to vote for Trump is suddenly going to be like, “Well, now I am voting for him because impeachment is so . . . uncouth!!” There is already so much dirt and malfeasance by this guy that I don’t see how it backfires.

Second, an impeachment inquiry will get more people to talk to Congress than would otherwise talk, will bring out more Presidential and advisor malfeasance than otherwise, because we know there is lots of malfeasance (Shit, how many were indicted/convicted under Mueller?).

Third, an actual impeachment would mean Trump would have to testify, which means perjury x 800. If if he is not removed from office, it will be days of hearings that basically show how corrupt and unfit this motherfucker is. He would open the door to so many crimes during his testimony that it will be an embarrassing failure of epic proportions. Trump on the stand and Trump’s incompetent advisers on the stand will be terrible for his GOP supporters and enablers.

Finally, apathy in voting (along with suppression, of course) led to his election (i.e., the “they both suck!!!” people didn’t bother voting in rich white suburbs, leaving to old white boomers who always vote to elect him. Again, fuck Wisconsin and Michigan.). Politically, it makes no sense to pander to Trump’s base, as they are a lost cause, but Dems must focus on driving up voter turn out. If impeachment shows how unbelievably shitty this guy is, more people will show up to vote him out. It actually makes the most sense over doing nothing and hoping they win on the issues (which they won’t).

Unsurprised

Redshirt

Don’t celebrate yet. Trump’s jury is literally a jury of his own peers. They need to present a clear case, a Smoking Gun, something that Republicans cannot defend, or, if they do, something they can use to convince a majority of the country that the Republicans don’t deserve their vote.

I’m not sure if Trump is an idiot or if he’s playing the Democrats like a fiddle. Either way, the Democrats need to tread lightly. Don’t just impeach just to say you did it. Get all your ducks in a row, set up your case for either the Republicans and the American People.

ballsofsteelandfury

This.

Plus, let’s say he DOES get impeached. That doesn’t mean shit. Clinton got impeached and he finished out his term and I bet you that he would have been reelected if eligible.

Trump won’t care if he gets impeached. He’ll continue with his thing and get reelected.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

He will care very, very, very much. If he were capable of not caring, the Mueller investigation would have gone nowhere.

Redshirt

Good point. Republicans overreached in ’98-’99. If anything, it proved the Framers of the Constitution was wise to make conviction/removal require an Absolute Majority, so a President wouldn’t be removed on a whim.

SonOfSpam

Nah, impeachment is bad. After Clinton’s impeachment, the Dems lost a crapton of seats in Congress. The difference is this: Clinton was impeached for lying about whether a blowjob constituted sex. Consensual sex. Wrong? Sure, but people understood that lying under oath about a blowjob is kinda weak to remove a president. This is very very different, and the criminal cherry on a cake of corruption. Decent chance that once the various hearings get going (and we’re gonna see his financials), Republicans will suddenly be SHOCKED at the crimes (because they wanna save their own skins), and we’ll have a Nixonian ending. He will not finish his term. Book it.

Unsurprised

I’m in. I still think he’s untouchable.

A bunch of the Democrats in the House – the body they flipped on the promise of holding him accountable – didn’t and probably still don’t want to impeach him, investigate him, and frankly, don’t seem to think he did anything wrong (I wonder why …). And this is with the experienced, arm-twisting blah blah worthless POS as Speaker. They’re never going to make a case on Ukraine when there have been impeachable offenses coming out the ass since the day he was sworn in. So even if they do impeach him, it’s not even going to pressure the Republicans protecting his fat fucking deadbeat loser ass to shift from giving him total coverage. And in the end, he stays, he wins, and I guess we just sit on our hands and let this shit keep playing out forever.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I’m not sure if Trump is an idiot or if he’s playing the Democrats like a fiddle.

It can be two things!

This is burning me up and no one is doing a goddamn thing about it. But guess who had a bowl of chili, a bowl of salad, and a bowl of beans for dinner? Guess who’s getting to work early tomorrow to shit on someone’s desk?

She’s a bitch who completely sucks. Its cool. I’m a Non-Trump Republican so being a minority, I’m allowed to say that.

Unsurprised

You need better lawyers. My first thought was some Federalist Society vampires, but now I think you may as well just go full criminal lawyer.

Redshirt

scotchnaut

I can refute that in three words: Kenny Rogers Jackass.

I was thinking more about the horrible Steven Seagall skits.

Unsurprised

Because you can’t outdo real life Steven Seagall in being a giant piece of shit.

Unsurprised

I wish I at least had fat guy charisma. Anyway, I’ve wasted all my up time from being on-off sick. Nap time.

Unsurprised

The best part is the final line about the decision being handed down the day after Munich Oktoberfest … festival began.

It’s a pretty good Red Wings vs. Avalanche goalie fight.

scotchnaut

“Yeah, sure. It was a pretty good fight. I once saw Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante trade fists over a puck bunny by the name of Delilah after a preseason game in St. Louis back in ’68. That was a fight!”

Whoever’s doing PR for Agholor should get a nice bonus come Christmas. That’s literally the perfect response.
