Welcome back to the comments of the week. Hope you are staying warm, sane and busy. The banner bracket is back, baby. Thanks Senior for putting them all together. We’re not even out of the second round and there have been some great matchups already. Reminder to go vote for your favoUrite’s. Monday’s draft was places to live from books(sorta). Lots of fun. Got a bit existential when the chat got into who’s head does DFO live in and if any of it was real. Not sure the answer to either, but glad to be here. Litre bought some moar Snaxx and we talked about banking and leaving them on Wednesday. Thursday bought Maestro and the weekly scam post. This is such a fun series. I’ll be sad went it ends. Battle bots is nearing it’s end and keeping with the theme the open thread got into smashing drones.
Friday bought the Mix Tape feature, which SonOfSpam won, as usual. I guess we all live in his world, so that answers the question above. Saturday got into EDT and how it sucks to have a short weekend.
And yeahright bought the week to a close with his Po’boy. OMG that looks good. have added it to the list of things to make from him.
If you’re interested, there’s a JV hoopsball bracket you can join to try to win some prize. Maybe. Join here if you’re interested.
As a reminder, this post will cover comments made up to and through the Saturday Night Open Thread. Sunday comments stand alone and Monday comments will go on the next week’s post.
Without further ado, here are the comments of the week.

Penthouse Letters. Pretty sure those are 100% fiction, as the same phrases and writing style can be seen, and, yes, I probably read those too much to know that.
If that is taken, the series A Noodle Shop Mystery by Vivien Chen also sounds good. Murder mysteries and such, with titles like Murder Lo Mein, Dim Sum of All Fears, & Egg Drop Dead are truly inspiring to my stomach and my fat ass.

I never thought those letters were true, either, until one day….

Kendal took Alexcys to his bedroom and keeps telling her, “I appreciate you” and I’m wondering if that’s code for “I wanna bang you in the ass”
Note to self: Next time I buy Balls a drink and he says he appreciates it, sit down quickly.

You know what’s better than beer? Free beer. You know what’s better than free beer? Free beer from an internet stranger. Thanks, ArmedandHammered, this first beer is indeed tasty and refreshing. Tiny acts of DFO (non-self) love.

With regards to the below conversation regarding Jim Beam and ginger ale:
HOST: I made you a Beam and ginger ale.
RTD: Thanks! I like mine with a bit more whiskey though.
HOST: But you haven’t tasted it yet.

RTD: Did I stutter?

Trying to reduce 12 years and 4 jobs all at one place into one resume page is difficult. More specifically, its hard trying to find the professional way to say “suffered through perpetual bullshit”, “avoided doing something illegal that I was told was perfectly fine”, and “proceeded to ignore the voices in my head that are making valid points and arguments”.

“familiar with legal compliance issues”

Excluding QBs from the cap… I don’t like that idea. An overpaid starting QB sinking any of 31 teams by play and cap could be very VERY enjoyable. The downside is that double failure, would give more ammo to QB Wins stans. To be clear: it’s the most overvalued “stat” after win probability. Just complete horseshit.

My mother and her husband got both shots. Now it’s 50+ with chronic diseases, plus teachers and other workers. Per age and profession, my tier is right after Sunglass Hut part-timers.

This moderation thing my wife taught me a few days ago sure does work. Drink enough to get tipsy but not wasted and you wake up ok the next day. Who knew?

Just make sure to employ moderation in moderation.

So my view on vaccine priority is:
If you legitimately qualify under the rules of your jurisdiction, go for it. You do not need to voluntarily hold back because you think the rules are bad or other people “deserve” it more. Let the public health officials make that call, even if they might screw it up and set rules that are dumb or inconsistent.
However, lying about your eligibility (and I’m including clever manipulations such as “my friend just ‘hired’ me to babysit their kids, so now I’m a ‘professional caretaker’!”) is not something I’m comfortable with.
So I’m a little weirded out by a mass email I just received from a health care organization noting that eligibility has been expanded to all adults with certain high-risk health conditions, here’s a link where you can register for a vaccination appointment, and oh by the way you don’t need any documentation of your high-risk health condition other than a self-verification form. Again, this was a mass email, not something targeted at me, and I don’t have any of the eligible conditions. It’s true that buried in the email is a link to a government site that lists the criteria, but the link doesn’t explain that, and nowhere does the email even say “IF you are eligible.” I don’t think I’m being conspiratorial in interpreting this as basically saying “just go ahead and do this, there’s no way you can be caught or even turned away.”
I suspect that what’s motivating this is that their doctors’ offices are being bombarded with inquiries from people wanting to get vaccinated, or get a doctor’s note saying that they’re eligible, and this is their way of saying “leave us alone, you don’t need anything from us.”
Maybe I’m being too judgmental, but I find this all really distasteful. Of course, hopefully it’ll all be moot in a month or so when they open it up to everyone and the problem becomes having more vaccine doses than willing recipients.
I qualified under CA’s expanded eligibility as of yesterday. Better yet, I managed to get my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine today. Before my stomping around the internet to find an available appointment, I had called my “health care provider” to get a doctor’s note, was roundly ignored, and so printed out a summary of my medical record from the medical office web portal and figured that was ample evidence of my qualifications. Utterly unnecessary. I could have gotten the shot as a 22-year-old Olympic athlete — no checking (they did check my id, but all that proves is I am the guy who made the appointment and has the insurance card they were reading). Honor system will work for another 72 hours or so and then all hell will break loose.
Congratulations, that’s great!
And yeah, in general I think that rules that aren’t enforced are worse than no rules at all. Same thing is going on with a lot of the mask and other quarantine rules — lots of relatively low-risk activities are “banned,” but there’s no enforcement even of a lot of “high-risk” stuff.
Rules that are not enforced piss you off? We must share some DNA somewhere.
I will say the Walgreens folks where I got poked were very good about enforcing their “everyone waits in a single line” rule and kept bouncing the “But I just have a question” scammers who kept creeping up to the front. Because of course the real “question” was whether their special selves could be prioritized over the rest of us slobs patiently waiting in line. Pharmacy folks were staunch and so I did not have to shiv anyone for cutting in line!
Is one of the health conditions “beer-liking” because I gotta get me some mRNA and fast.
No, but a BMI > 40 kg/m2 is (in California), so enough beer will get you there eventually, presumably.
I really don’t wanna know whether I qualify based on that.
However, I can always use Sickle Cell Anemia, whatever that is.
Sickle cell anemia sounds like a disease communists would get.
That’s pretty much Gumby’s experience from yesterday, except he got J&J. I am going to wait until it’s my turn, but I am double masking and ruthlessly social distancing until the end of the world.
Same here. This has gotten almost criminal with the prioritizations. For over the past year I was told repeatedly that I would be in a “priority” vaccine tier when the vaccine was available. Since I, you know, have WORKED EVERY FUCKING DAY DURING A FUCKING PANDEMIC.
And we keep getting shoved further and further to the back of the line.
I’m not cheating now. No fucking way. I’m going to document the shit out of this though.
That documentation will get me a one way ticket…to the back of the fucking line when they change it again.
THIS is a major cause of my anxiety issues.
Covid vaccines have a very short shelf life. If unused, they go to the trash.
Yes, I was recently visited by the Rationalization Fairy. Instead of a tooth, I had to give her a Janoris Jenkins hype video.
Oh yeah, no doses should be getting thrown out. Apparently that happened a couple of times in New York, because Super COVID Hero Cuomo decided that it was so important to prevent people “jumping the queue” that giving the “wrong” person a vaccine would net a massive fine.
Getting shots in arms is a good thing.

How did i miss that literature meme, that’s gold
Yes, but it’s missing an entry for Canadian Literature. Perhaps:
“I will die, if that’s ok with you.”
Indian Literature:
“I’ll be back.”
Russian Literature:
“No you won’t.”
German Literature: I will die for the Fatherland . . . or the Eternal Feminine
/read Goethe in German when I was younger and cleverer, though not so clever as to NOT read Goethe in German
