Your “Happy Purim!” Monday Night Open Thread

Your regularly scheduled Monday night Warhammer professor, ArmedandHammered, is off tonight. Sorry, any esoteric references for the evening will likely be about topics other than video games, because I’m the wrong kind of nerd.

But let’s start with another holiday reference!  Tonight begins Purim. For those of you that aren’t MOTs or MOT-adjacent, Purim is one in a long line of Jewish holidays that can be summarized as “they tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat!” This one is special and right up DFO’s alley, however, since it’s a mitzvah on Purim to get drunk. There are lots of traditions, many of which are tied to ridiculing the oppressor of the story, Haman.  That’s where the delicious cookies in the banner image get their name, and when we were kids, the Cantor at our temple told us to write Haman’s name on the bottom of our shoes so when his name was read during the telling of the story behind Purim, we could stamp him out while also waving around noisemakers and shouting and making a general hubub.  Most people, sum up Purim by saying it’s Jewish Halloween, but aside from costumes and sweets and drunkenness…oh yeah, I see it.

Anyway, my mom mailed me some hamantaschen, so I’ll eat those and that’ll be it. And looks like I’ve hit the word count minimum, so let’s move to the sprots. If you have questions about Purim or Jewness in general, drop ’em in the comments.

College Basketball:

Is it Madness time yet? No?  Well, I guess all these little conference tournaments are the amuse bouche for that. ESPN and ESPN2 are carrying the men’s tournaments; FS1 has the Big East Women’s championship at 6PM DFO time.

As DonT reminded us last night, History of the World Part 2 kicks off on Hulu today if you’re looking for a substitute viewing activity. Your regularly scheduled Warhammer education will resume next Monday. With balls’s inspiration from the Hedley Lamarr mug, go do that voodoo that you do so well!

Hi folks!  Rikki here for a second week in a row with another edition of DFO RADIO!  This week’s collection is based on “The Shining” theme.  If you don’t see your request in here remember that it’s nothing personal, as I mentioned last week youtube made the process of putting these together a lot more time-consuming.  Hopefully I’ll figure out a way to make sure everyone is adequately represented and everybody gets at least one song onto the air.
